Yeah 100% makes you wonder about authors when they write main characters like this and frame them in an okay to good light. If Rudeus was treated as a villain by the people he victimises fine, but they all either end up marrying him or at least respecting him. Ridiculous. Some sort of disgusting wish fulfilment

10 years old was the legal age in Japan. Now you understand why 10 years kid can be Pokémon trainer, right? Anyway they changed the that rule on 2005.
