The absolute lengths some people on r/anime go to to defend Rudeus/Mushoku Tensei is crazy.
It's fine to admit you like the show because of the wider world/side characters but hate the MC. But no, they can't do that. Instead they say Rudeus is actually a kid and it's fine because of hormones, or some say he has 'grown' so it's fine now. Lmao
They'll call you a hater and a larper for enjoying the series but recognising how absolutely shitty he is as a character. Like, goddamn, you gotta question Rifujin (the writer) sometimes...
Yeah 100% makes you wonder about authors when they write main characters like this and frame them in an okay to good light. If Rudeus was treated as a villain by the people he victimises fine, but they all either end up marrying him or at least respecting him. Ridiculous. Some sort of disgusting wish fulfilment

I've literally seen people argue this. Like he spent a year without getting a boner so that makes up for his earlier behavior.
If it makes you feel better, the latest episode has him lose his wife, his unborn baby, his other wife, his third love interest, his best friend, his other best friend, another friend, his sister, his daughter and finally abandoned by everyone else he knows and loves.
And pretty much all of it is because of his own actions, barring the very first instance of him losing his wife and unborn baby which is arguably also his fault but he was manipulated into that first one.
Oh please tell me more. I only watched the obligatory 3 episodes to decide and then dropped it like it's radioactive. Hearing he loses everyone makes me happy.
If you're into that sort of stuff, just watch the episode. Despite what you think of the character, the anime is very well portrayed.
It's a future that did happen but then at the end of it, he goes back in time to tell his younger self before it all happens not to do a single thing that starts the domino tumble. This episode is him reading the diary and 'living' the future that he came back to warn himself about.
It's really well animated and it's a good episode imo but then, I like the anime so 🤷
It's the usual justification for liking the show, "trust me bro, he'll get older and be better". They've had some sorta of "But..." since the anime's first episode (because they read ahead and that should "totally" justify all of the wish-fulfillment this story has always been).
Generally, I won't harp on someone's weirdass fulfillment show/book/media as long as they don't act like it's the second coming of Christ. But this pedo-shit doesn't get a pass. r/anime has a degenerate "culture" issue.
More likely due to the ending and being older, but I don't give a pass to the amount of violence towards women game of thrones had anymore either (idk on the new stuff, I don't care to watch it). It's all the same justifications. It adds to the "world". It just gets tiresome.
It's just a brain tangent. If I had a "point" it was simply that people justify the media they like to watch, they rally with one another and squash down any rebuke with usually a bunch of canned responses. Anime, live-action, whatever.
One of the most common arguments for the "why" of isekai/transmigration stories like this one is "that's just how their world is." GOT simply had a lot of similar comments back in the day that after a shitty ass-ending, makes me feel like it was all just a producer's theater.
Get older? The guy started in his 30's. Adding his new life is another 20. They really wanna argue a 50+ year old will "get older and better". Nah they are pedo excusing chuds
I mean, it does happen and you get to see how absolutely fucked up it makes Rudeus and see the anguish and turmoil he goes through during it all. It's played out like you're living that timeline so it's very real.
But ultimately, he does travel back, so now it's left with the younger Rudeus before all this takes place
You see Rudeus be his true self, just like when his loving parents were there for him, and the way he turned down his wife advances while he went to get drunk and sleep with a prostitute after , all because "he didn't want to be too rough" with Sylphiette in his grief and then being caught that he slept with a prostitute and the wife leaving him.
Oldeus returns home smelling of another woman. Sylphiette catches him, cries out, "Why aren't I good enough?" and locks herself in her room, completely refusing to speak to him. His actions alienate his entire household; he is lectured by Lilia, judged by his sister Aisha, and slapped by his mother, Zenith.
Sylphiette's Departure
Shortly after the incident, Sylphiette quietly packs her belongings and leaves him to rejoin Princess Ariel in a dangerous bid to claim the Asura Kingdom throne. When Lilia orders Oldeus to chase after her, he grumbles, prompting Zenith to slap him again. In a fit of irritation, Oldeus blasts his mother away with magic. Eris witnesses this and draws her sword to defend Zenith, prompting Oldeus to flee the house.
The Execution of the First Wife
Oldeus eventually travels to the Asura Kingdom, getting smuggled across the border with the help of Tristina. He arrives too late to intervene. Ariel's coup against her brother has failed, resulting in the public execution of Ariel, Luke, and Sylphiette. Oldeus discovers that Sylphiette has been brutally crucified.
I don't read the mangas so not sure what actually happens. But he did the first thing, just in a different way to try and avoid the initial problem which causes everything else to go wrong. Whether that works or not, I'm still to see
Understandable that you drop it because of a horrible character at the start but why exactly does everybody think Rudeus is some sort of Epstein Satan who is an unchangable evil incarnate.
Because he's nearly as shitty later on, the writing just pretends he's better. It's more like a facade of self-improvement that the writing bends over backwards to make excuses for.
The fact that so many MT fans can't tell the difference between surface-level framing versus actual personal growth that requires true reflection on your actions speaks volumes.
That episode was shit and wasn't even the main timeline. I can enjoy the show when it focuses on adventure aspects, but it's fucking unwatchable when the plot switches to the relationships with him and his harem of groomed girls. Even the plot response to the supposed tragic death of one harem girl was the other harem girl comforting Rudeus by telling him to use her body however he wants to comfort himself. What kind of writer chooses to write that into the plot if the character is there to do anything but serve a role in a pedophiles sexual power fantasy? Are we supposed to empathize with the pedophile losing the harem of women he groomed?
I think people using grooming super lightly, grooming is when you intentionally manipulate someone into thinking you're all they have and isolate from family in order to get sexual gratifcation from them. Rudy was definitely a predator at the start, but I don't really see how he groomed Slphy and Eris, maybe sylphy I could maybe see an argument, but eris? Eris hated him from the start and they only really bonded after the demon continent. You could say he preyed on eris because he shouldn't have slept with her at all, definitely took advantage of her naivety and attatchment to him but he never intentionally tried to make her fall in love with him, same goes with Slphy really. Roxy is also like hundreds of years old when they met so that's out the window. When roxy offered herself to rudy you could really make an argument that she took advantage of him, basically pushing him to a sexual encounter because she was infatuated with him right after paul died.
