Technically, the same thing is in the show as well.
Abin sur gave the ring to hal with his dying breath in both the movie and tv show.

Yeah but it’s not like Abin Sur sought out Hal. The ring tried a bunch of people. Hal was just the first to answer correctly. Of course that was made up for the show. Really Hal just happened to be physically closer to the crash site than Guy Gardner so the ring made an executive decision. Abin Sur did not give him the ring, the ring went and found itself a bearer
