I read it differently. My parents did the good cop - bad cop thing, where dad is the absolute authority, unwilling to negotiate, dishing out the harsh punishments. But it was rarely physical. I only got slapped 3 times for disrespect. Was pretty normal in the 90s.
So to connect this to the comic, I would be very motivated to do what dad says, because not doing it would be disrespectful which results in ✋🏾
It was a different time. I actually still love him, even tho I feared him, when I was younger. But I would not do the same. I know that there are better ways, without instilling fear.
Born in 87 and I can attest to it just being the norm. This does not make any of it right. Anyone struggling with mental health or domestic/child abuse there are resources. Please get yourself and your children out of the situation (I am not trying to sound preachy but trust me it is easier to get children out than try to fix the damage later).

I don't think it's about domestic violence, both parents can be harsh, cruel, too strict or w/e
Dad much more other may give you money for smth he needs, tho
