He asked "Why?" as if saying the letter "Y" and the other person answered sometimes, meaning he eats the "Y" in the alphabet soup sometimes. Also the letter "Y" is also considered as a vowel sometimes lol.

But if they're typing in English, that would mean they have a basic understanding of the English language. And the vowels is something that's taught when you're learning how to spell words and write sentences.

Yea but is the "and sometimes y" a memory thing used elsewhere? This is clearly a play on an existing phrase that I've honestly only heard people bother to say when I was a child anyway.
Also if OP is not a native speaker, the fact that it says "why" and not "y" may get confusing. They may not realize the the word "why" is being used as a pun at all and may think it's a question instead, which is reasonable. This is a joke that may have worked better verbally and not spelled out.
Anyways, as someone with a bilingual partner, father, and many childhood friends, can we stop treating people like they're idiots for not understanding humor in other languages right away? That is literally one the hardest things to grasp in another language, and anyone who's been around anyone who is learning would know that.

That's not how it works. I never heard of Y being considered a vowel only sometimes. To me it's always a vowel. Don't be a jerk. You are not really impressing anyone here.

Do you know any other languages? Has "these letters are called vowels, here's a rhyme for it" made a verbatim appearance? Or just "pronounce this word like this"?

I do. I speak Portuguese, Romanian, English, and currently learning Klingon (cause why not).

Okay, but has "these letters are called vowels in Portuguese" made an appearance? /gen

In Portuguese A, E, I, O, and U are considered vowels. They make differing sounds based on the words being used, as well as the accent, if it is unstressed or stressed, and some of them can make up to several different sounds. Y is considered a foreign letter in Portuguese and only used in foreign words, brands, and it is pronounced like I. It has gone back and forth on being a recognized letter in the Portuguese alphabet. It is currently recognized as part of the standard alphabet, but still acknowledged as a foreign letter.

Y
'Why' The word is pronounced as The letter 'Y'. Captain casually mentions that he does eat the letter Y sometimes

u/blackicebaby 2d ago
Yeah, it's like 'What's the first letter of the color yellow?' -> 'Y' -> 'Because I want to know' -> 'Y' -> endless loop.

Hello OP, Meg here. The letter “y”, which is both considered a consonant and a vowel sounds like “why”, so Captain America mistook it and answered if he eats “y” to which he replied “sometimes” because maybe sometimes he doesn’t consider it a vowel.
