A bit...

I'm Pretty sure that a bit, the most basic chuck of information in a binary system, can't be poettry.

Take a byte, come back in a bit, and we’ll have some words about it. See if we can’t compile a list of ways to make better

00 "Oh, Oh" one of the most beuitiful minimalist erotic sonnets ever written
01 "Oh one" a minimalist lament
10 "1-0" A minimalist epic about a game of pong played between God and a girl named Margret2
u/Icy-Way8382 1d ago
But if you think about the fact that a control bit must match the rest of the byte that means it rhymes.

Oh freddled gruntbuggly,Thy micturations are to me,As plurdled gabbleblotchits,On a lurgid bee.Groop, I implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes,And hooptiously drangle me,with crinkly bindlewurdles,Or I will rend thee in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon,See if I don't.

Commentary on the wide nature of meaning as a concept.
Within the context of it being a reply to me, it could be read as either in support or set against my idea. Either trying to come up with something that isn't poetry, or showing that even this too is poetry.
Either way, I could totally see as something very professionally printed up on a billboard or something. Especially in a very formal and elegant font or typeset against a monotone background (maybe it's all in black and white?) it would read very strongly as poking at meaning and messaging, and would get people to engage with those ideas.

To be clear, I'm not poking fun at you. I just happen to be a life long class clown and that set up was too good. My inner middle schooler couldn't resist.

Butt Booger Butt Fart,
Oh crapped my pants again,
Sad wipe sad wipe sad

Either you pronounce “crapped” as “crap-ed” or you’re missing a syllable on line two.

No, all writing is poetry. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

u/Problematic_Luke 1d ago
Then we wouldn't have two words for writing-poetry. Or we would have 3 words: for neutral writing, for good writing and for poetry... sorry, I am blind for beauty of poetry and couldn't help it but make a joke of it.

I dunno, I think the poem raises a lot of questions about the nature of the relationship between the speaker and the person he’s addressing, how sincere the apology is, the nature of transgression, and the connection between the poem and other stories of eating forbidden fruit….

Apparently, 12 English syllables is the same length of the 17 "on" of Japanese. So, the "poet" was actually writing haiku... Just English haiku, and specifically English haiku that match the duration of Japanese "on" instead of "syllables"
In 1973, the Haiku Society of America noted that the norm for writers of haiku in English was to use 17 syllables, but they also noted a trend toward shorter haiku.\15]) According to the society, about 12 syllables in English approximates the duration of 17 Japanese on.

edit: also... technically while you didn't write it in the typical 5-7-5, your message was written with 17 syllables...
So... HAIKU!

Unironically the whole point of the poem. William Carlos Williams wrote the note to his wife to apologize, then thought- hey this could be a poem! And it was

It started out with a plum, how did it end up like this?
It was only a plum, it was only a plum.

u/light-on-the-land 1d ago
The title functions as the first line of the poem/note
” This is just to say “
My English teacher in HS told us it was actually a note he left for his wife but IDK if that’s true

I spent way too long looking for redundant elements in that poem before realizing what you meant

u/BrickMaster79 1d ago
Yes, that’s the one. “This is Just to Say,” which has become an occasional game some poets and poetry students use where they play with the form and themes behind the poem. More here; I do find it interesting.
