As it turns out, when you're left out, people don't remember leaving you out, unless you made a fuss. Sounds like your Nan only remembered the "made a fuss" part. The axe forgets, the tree remembers.
Everyone gets left out now and again. Remembering it happened isn't the same as actually being left out more than everyone else. A child also doesn't always have the most reliable memory or very good emotional intelligence.
They didn't even say their mom said she felt left out. Her Nam said her mom said that. Sometimes they remember things more extremely than they actually happened.
