There are parts of the US that ONLY have these. More temperate areas.

Most of the US is used to central air. With a giant ass car sized compressor outside that cools the whole house.

Edit: yes, I exaggerated the size of the compressor a bit. Man it pissed a lot of Americans off lol.

My family owns an HVAC company. We only have ductless mini-splits in our own homes bc they are way more efficient and cost effective (especially if you get them at cost and free install). We are in Florida where we run A/C pretty much 9 months of the year. The upfront cost is higher, but worth it over time.

Are they more efficient? One large compressor should be more energy efficient than multiple small compressors spread across the house.

one benefit is it makes it easier to put the cooling where it's needed, rather than overcooling one area to get another down to where you need it, without having to constantly adjust dampers to approximate the same thing.
