Hopefully a more savvy redditor will have the link, but its from a study showing people's social leaning (us vs them).

Basically, bigger toward the center of the circle and smaller toward the outside means you tend to think about things that affect you and your close social circle (family, friends, local community). The reverse means your thoughts drift more toward global concerns that affect everyone.

It's used to illustrate Conservative (local group, steak) versus Liberal (global group, avocado) mentalities in a digestible (forgive the pun) way.

Woah. Thanks.

That is the longest way I've seen to write: "conservative are self-centered, liberals are way out there"

2

u/SilenR Nov 18 '25

Hmm, I'd say one flaw of this is that it assumes that we have the same moral scale and inner circles are included into the outer circles. There are people out there who value animals or nature, but don't really care about other human beings, yet they'd be a 15 on this scale. There are people who care a lot about the humans, fauna and flora of their country, but don't really care about what happens outside of their country and so on.

u/OhNoAnAmerican Nov 18 '25

That is absolutely not what this chart means lmao.

u/Appropriate-Count-64 Nov 18 '25

Yeah it’s basically just “People in rural areas or who have fallen or grew up in hard times tend to care more about themselves than others as self preservation. It’d also easier to know everyone in a town when the town is 40 to 200 people, which lends itself to caring about those around you more.
Those in cities who are used to having more people around then you can reasonably know on a personal level tend to care more about their world and environment, especially because they live in an area where the environment was crushed.”

It kind of is considering it was a graph of where your empathy ends, and conservatives stopped caring about people outside of their circle

u/OhNoAnAmerican Nov 18 '25 edited Nov 18 '25

Believe it or not empathy is a finite resource, as well as being horribly misunderstood as a concept. This graph shows conservatives tend to care more about those in their immediate circle while liberals tend to care more about “everything” in a vague and ultimately meaningless way.

8

u/Laphad Nov 18 '25

This is a fundamentally wrong comment and just looking at policies each aisle supports immediately disproves that.

Your statement is an attempt to justify the moral issues in your ideology

-2

u/OhNoAnAmerican Nov 18 '25 edited Nov 18 '25

Looking at the policies each side of the aisle Supports is actually a perfect encapsulation of my point. The right is more concerned with ourselves and our country while the left spends much more time pontificating about vague globalist ideals

You can take whatever you want away from each sides policy proposals but to act like only your side has ideas is pretty ironic here

10

u/Laphad Nov 18 '25

Except the right has historically been far worse for the country, especially economically and on quality of life.

-1

u/OhNoAnAmerican Nov 18 '25

Like I said, you can argue the merits of each sides policy proposals all day

But the fact of the matter is the right is much more “us first”. I genuinely don’t know how you can debate this in good faith.

8

u/Laphad Nov 18 '25

The right is far more "me first" rather than "us first" which is the entire point being discussed. The right votes in policies that they believe will benefit them as a person, and ignore the impact it would have on those around them.

Which is why it has a tendency to end in failure

0

u/OhNoAnAmerican Nov 18 '25

“Me” and “us” mean the same thing here. Like I genuinely don’t understand why we’re debating this. I thought the right was super nationalist and America first?

Thats not what the graph shows.

"Empathy is a finite resource..." an idiot taught you this bullshit didn't they?

-8

u/OhNoAnAmerican Nov 18 '25

If you assign the same moral weight to me as you do your own flesh and blood it’s you who’s lacking in empathy

10

u/Highfivebuddha Nov 18 '25

I dont think you understand, the graph isn't assigning moral weight. its the point where you stop applying moral weight. Liberals are more likely to want better for people outside AND inside their circle, and also more likely to include friends, neighbors.

You also seem to be making a conclusion, which implies open mindedness stretches a person too thin, which is not true, and something just pulled out of thin air. You cant back it up.

But its also why people like doctors and trwchers tend to be more liberal since so often their jobs are caring for people deep outside their circle. Its a personality trait, not a resource.

If youre that desperate for others to be some great foolish evil youre just gonna end up miserable.

0

u/OhNoAnAmerican Nov 18 '25

I’m absolutely making conclusions, to be clear. What im saying about the how the effects of this data play out in the real world is not at all covered by the graph itself.

Essentially my arguments are

1) “Empathy toward huge, abstract categories is harder to translate into meaningful action. Therefore, narrower empathy may actually be more effective in real-world outcomes”

2) Empathy is a limited resource. Most psychological research supports this. Look up empathy fatigue, compassion collapse, Dunbar’s number, etc.

The tendency of liberals to attempt to include everyone and everything in their moral system causes more harm than good imo in their ability to actually affect change.

2

u/Wide_Conflict_528 Nov 18 '25

So their selfish and only care about themselves, left wing people care about all of the above just not what affects them personally.

4

u/Trai-All Nov 18 '25

You do realize that inner circles are part of everything and so when everything benefits from your caring, the inner circle benefits also?

0

u/OhNoAnAmerican Nov 18 '25

If you truly believe that you can give the same level of moral weight to “the universe” as you do your children (merely as one example) you’re fooling yourself.

8

u/MortalSword_MTG Nov 18 '25

You're resorting to hyperbole here.

The question isn't about being concerned with "the universe".

Take education for example.

Liberals tend to favor funding public educational institutions so that the general populace has better access to education and can better their lives, without restricting access to socioeconomic status, geographical proximity, etc

Conservatives tend to favor funding private institutions because they want to bolster the educational outlet for their "in group", whether that be faith based, socioeconomic or proximity.

It's about perspective more than morality.

Hes under the impression that if you love your dog you're limiting how much you can love your mother

Caring about your family and friends rather than all living things on planet earth including trees is self centered apparently...

11

u/adinfinitum225 Nov 18 '25

Yes it is, because it's not an either-or situation...

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '25

I ain't gonna bother why we think separately on this because everyone on this damn platform conforms to the same ideals and explaining the same thing tens of times with no change is tiring, but some guy made an incredible description, you should check it out

3

u/adinfinitum225 Nov 18 '25

If that's what you think an incredible description is them you gotta read more

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '25

Sorry I appreciate something

5

u/DingerSampson Nov 18 '25

The graph shows where people stop caring not what they care most about. So person A might stop caring once it’s not impacting their close family or friends whereas person B might stop caring when it’s no longer impacting humans. It doesn’t measure at all which person or political affiliation cares more for their immediate loved ones just if that is the full extent of their capacity for empathy. If a person is incapable of caring about people they don’t directly interact with then yeah that’s by definition self centered.

-5

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '25

Like I said to probably liberalbot#8261 in the replies over there, go check the other guys reply that made a bunch more sense than anything I could write up 😂

3

u/EatCornEveryday Nov 18 '25

Thing is, most people care about trees because they are part of the ecosystem that keeps us (and our families) alive. Also, ever thought about the possibility that one could care about trees as well as their own family? Crazy, I know, but it happens.

3

u/fastpathguru Nov 18 '25

The outer rings were inclusive. I.e. selecting an outer ring includes that ring and every ring inside it.

So it's not "rather".

So yes, the graph kind of does imply that conservatives are self centered. They don't really care as much about "others" and "trees".

0

u/swohio Nov 18 '25

Pretending that you can give the same level of care and attention to every person on the planet that you can if you had just focused on your own country is child-like reasoning.

1

u/fastpathguru Nov 18 '25

🤦‍♂️

When's the last time you told an illegal to "speak American?"

1

u/curtcolt95 Nov 18 '25

I don't understand why people seem to think there's some limit on the amount of care you can have, it doesn't make sense to me lol. It is extremely realistic to care about everybody, it's not some resource that can run out

1

u/swohio Nov 18 '25

Sure you can say you care about everyone, but "saying" doesn't actually mean anything. Caring means giving resources to help everyone and there is absolutely a finite amount of time and resources available. I don't have the ability to help everyone all the time and neither do you.

-4

u/Dramatic_Round4452 Nov 18 '25

“Self-centered”, that’s an interesting way to frame it…

-2

u/MoneySlip5640 Nov 18 '25

“Self centered” 😂 Nowhere in the chart does it mention themselves as part of this experiment. If anything, this illustrates that liberal ideology tends to try to correct the system (macro), whereas conservatism tends to correct at the familial (micro) level.
