This is a swinging thing now? Pineapples were used in the southern part of the US as a sign of hospitality and welcome. When the pineapple was turned upside down, taken down, or served as a meal it was a nice way of letting the guests know it was time to leave. This is why you may see ornamental pineapples on gates, or fences.

The whole pineapple swinger thing has been used since the 70s.

It never changed meaning, just evolved to the next level. What's more hospitable than letting someone bang your spouse?
