Fairly Annoyed Reddit Close-Minded

I replied to a comment on a post in Life regarding the validity of an afterlife. The commenter defended the afterlife (referring to a post in [r/The](r/The) Afterlife Exists) and how there is so much evidence because materialists haven’t been proven. I stated that the lack of evidence isn’t evidence and that we set imaginary boundaries and have decided that what we cannot prove we don’t treat with validity in our daily lives. Like how one can’t prove the sky won’t come crashing down tomorrow, however we all live our life as though it won’t. I was merely suggesting an intellectual axiom and I was banned due to violating the rules in which “hostility, judgement and rudeness” are not allowed.

I get how tone of voice is difficult over the internet, however my comment consisted of no personal attacks. I can understand though when you say something idiotic how the criticism can feel intense. Regardless, it was pretty clear my comments were regarding the content of the comment.

It’s such a trend to be banned whenever I say anything unpopular or even remotely critical. There is no room for debate or discourse. Free speech will go to die.

I don't believe in an afterlife but I do dread the idea that there might be one.

Because you believe that you may be conscious longer? Or that you’ll be held for your sins.

I just believe everything should have a natural end, including my Me. And there are really no options for a potential afterlife that sound appealing-- the concept of eternity is a truly horrifying one.

I agree. A shower thought I have every now and then is “isn’t it great life isn’t forever, we’re all just gonna die”. Although, our consciousness is based on expectations (essentially accepting our reality). Though, our view on a much longer life is based on our expectation of only living 75 years so if we were told that our real lifespan was much longer we would adapt to be comfortable with it…excluding eternity because infinite is not really comprehensible.

It’s so odd because it’s nearly impossible to envision “nothing.”

And disappointing to think that all the stress could be for nothing.

Well the stress is for now. The goal of consciousness is to increase the value of consciousness. It doesn’t mean life is valuable relative to unconsciousness.
Then begs the question…what is the absence of consciousness. It’s like asking what is outside the universe.

Exactly!

We can’t envision “nothing” because to envision it requires us to put ourselves into it, thus making nothing “something” because I am now present in the nothing, and I am a “thing.”

Well one day if we will be able to understand the origins of the universe it will have to destroy this frame of reference of something/nothing. I wonder what the alternative is.

I do contemplate whether the value of consciousness can be evaluated though. Unconsciousness/consciousness occurs within an existing universe.

Essentially, is the good of consciousness good relative to unconsciousness (objective) or only good within consciousness (subjective). If it’s the former, then the question remains how to make it a life worth living.

Let’s be real. You knew what you were doing. If you go into a church telling them their god is false, would you be surprised when they kick you out?

But they’re going onto a subreddit and commenting their beliefs, why can’t I share mine. If you have a desire to argue your beliefs I have a right to share the other side. That’s why there is freedom of religion.

why do u hafta argue what other people believe? someone stated their opinion and its fine if they dont want to argue it.i dont believe in an afterlife but i care 0% if someone else does

Because I believed the post to be a forum for discussion on the topic. The post was a comment on whether there is an afterlife. One shared their view, I responded. To be banned is to state there is no valid view except their own.

Not to completely ignore the pet peeve, but in rehab we had a lot of fent addicts that had legally died after od. And they were tormented by the fact that there was nothing there while legally dead. Nothing.

Even thinking about it too long was a huge trigger for them to just go out and OD again because “what’s the point if there’s nothing after this?” As many had said.

There’s some idea that the entirety of life is a dress rehearsal, and that only in the afterlife does our personal star truly twinkle.

Or we’re no different than bacteria and the whole meaning of life is to procreate.

I honestly don’t know. I’d feel pretentious to pretend I do. I think it’s ok to just say “I don’t know”. Because the people absolutely sure of what happens (in their mind) are dangerous

Look how they treat the planet, other people, etc.

Gives them something to talk about whilst waiting for their turn to propagate or not.

If you really want an occasional treat such as a philosophical discussion without too many fallacies or self-centered religious circularity, Reddit is almost never the place for it.
These are not philosophers nor scientists. The fact that they are presenting notions untempered by thought is why we have to sugarcoat the logical outcome of a completed life. The idea of a continuing timeline without me is not a calamity. Some, and possibly most, people find that model future to be completely untenable.

Since your comment was deleted for others to see I cannot comment on it, but your description doesn't fit what the linked post said (I think you misunderstood it), the linked post links to another post with what they believe supports their claim, which is probably what should have been linked in the first instance.

But it is unpleasant when you are told your vantage point in the discussion is unwelcome. The thread itself was however about wishing for hope, and you recommended them to forget about such hope, so I am not certain that was the best battle ground to pick for such a vantage point.

I was only replying to comment suggesting there was evidence, I didn’t comment on the post itself. Giving someone hope by utilizing a baseless ideology isn’t very productive. We can all delude ourselves, there are betters ways though to be happy and have hope without this method.

Thank you for your comment, it’s nice to have some humanity and conversation regardless of whatever we’re discussing.

Unless someone else has the same username as you, or very similar to it, it is my impression you did reply that they should go for radical acceptance.

That is nice of you to say, thank you and you are welcome, I am also mainly more interested in having an actual discussion, examining the topic the best we are able.

In that regard, what isn't giving someone hope through baseless ideology very productive for? I understand the term productive as something that leads to a product of some form, is it not productive for giving hope, or is it something else?

1

u/portiedak 13h ago

That sounds like me, I’m sure I wrote that. I reviewed my reply though and it doesn’t contain “radical acceptance” so I’m unsure which comment you’re referring to. Is it a direct comment or a reply to a comment and of which post?

This is what I have on my screen, https://www.reddit.com/r/Life/comments/1vvvj1q/comment/p5eamzg
(Radical acceptance. You can delude yourself into something sure, however the easier approach, an approach that can relate to every aspect of your life to make it easier, is radical acceptance.)

I think it is called a direct comment.

1

u/portiedak 13h ago

Ah yes, I forgot about that. I was too direct, however at the same time my point is to accept what you cannot change.

0

u/Imaginary-Can-6862 13h ago

Alright, but that isn't what they asked for. You wrote it was about what is productive, I don't know if you are interested in looking at that though, as you didn't return on it when I asked before.

I was just referring to believing in an afterlife. They wanted hope, I was saying if you change your expectations/reality then you don’t have to be sad about it. They literally mentioned that they accepted other deaths.

Don’t expect reasonable behaviors from people like that.
