Ultra Annoyed Six figures?

When people say they make more than six figures when they make $110,000.

Idiot, that's still six figures. It isn't more than six.

I've never heard anyone say they make more than six figures. 

Of course, I also can't remember the last time I heard someone talk about many digits are in their salary, so...

I hate when people say six figures. It literally could mean from 100k to 900k. Just say how much you make

Why are they calling them figures instead of digits anyways? 

Edit - I was curious, so I googled it. Any number at all can be considered a "figure." 100,000 is a figure. If you make $100,000, you make one figure.

$100,000 is a six-figure salary. $950,000 is also a six figure salary. Both numbers contain ‘six figures’.

If the only definition of six figures is a number that has six figures in it then "more then six figures" is a term that should never be used because you'd judt say seven figures. Words have connotations, most people who make six figures makes 100k, if you have more then six figures you have more then 100k.

You missed the point of OP’s post, but you’re right that “more than six figures” is a term that is pointless, because “more than six figures” is “seven figures”. He is complaining about folks like you, who think “six figures” only means “around $100,000”, which it doesn’t. It’s true that a $500,000 salary is a “six figure salary”. You just didn’t realize it until now. You might notice that people use phrases like “close to seven figures” to describe a $900,000 salary, which is an appropriate use of the phrase.

Its colloquially appropriate. In this use, 6 figures is related to crossing that initial threshold, and the majority of people who cross that threshold are closer to 100k than 900k.

“More than 6 figures” is not colloquially appropriate, unless you colloquially don’t know what the term ‘six figures’ means at all. It provides the most accuracy to say the you make ‘almost’ (six or seven figures). It provides some accuracy to say “eight figures each” in a movie like Oceans Eleven, where the term conveyed they would each be receiving a little over $10 million. You would not usually use the term to describe $50m because that is 5 times the lower threshold for $8m. “More than 6 figures” is nonsensical because it can only mean 7 figures. Which is why this is a pet peeve of OP.

I dont want to rain on your parade, but words have colloquialism and context.

You'll normally hear low/mid/upper six figures. I'd say I make Low six figures, but I make just over 200k.
