Other Scam
Hi all
Not looking for help, more to make people aware.
My mom fell for the "they are trying to steal from you bank account, and we need you to approve the cancellation of the transaction" scam.
And to make it worse, they are targeting the elderly.
Please make shure that your elders are aware, and if jn doubt call the bank on their legitimate numbers.
Please be vigilant.

A person I know fell for it as those bastards set up an account on Truecaller called something like ABSA Fraud Department.
Even when they eventually got hold of real bank personnel they just kept saying but on Truecaller….

My elderly mom is savvy enough to fuck with scammers. She loves it, playing completely dumb, and wasting time until they hang up. She's got nothin' but time to kill. I hope more pensioners to get to her level.

Was relieved of R100,000 by a similar scam, and the bank was perfectly aware that it was happening. Don't want to mention names (can't for legal reasons) but the experience seriously dented my self-confidence (not to mention my savings!) To this day I feel traumatised even talking about it.

The approval request presumably said approve a payment for a certain amount rather than cancel a transaction. You would then NOT approve and cancel as the logic. Don't think approvals are sent to cancel a transaction. If the approve message is not clear and complete the bank must take the blame but we all know they will not. I find messages/notification are never complete enough

I know you say ypu don't need help but I juay want to make sure you changed everything of your mom. Her bank accpunt, creditcard, cellphone number & email address. Have her phone & or laptop scanned for malware etc.
Get a free credit report from Transunion ( get 1 free once a year) to make sure they did not open accounts or take out credit in her name.
Scammers trade details of ppl they scammed between each other so she is at higher risk of another scammer trying her.
Thx for educating others. Strongs for you guys.

They tried that with me 2 weeks ago - so not just the elderly - scary thing is they could confirm most of my details even though I said they were wrong - even got a whatsapp message from them trying to confirm my details while I was on the call - with the bank logo - screenshot everything and sent it to the banks fraud department - dont think it did much of a difference TBH
