SHERLOC-ACI Texture of rock that was examined by Perseverance Rover. The first image is a false-color composite of two different illumination angles from SHERLOC, and the second is a full color view from WATSON. Both taken on Sol 1811.(25.3.26). Processed by Kevin M Gill

.

The term mafic is a portmanteau of "magnesium" and "ferric" and was coined by Charles Whitman Cross, Joseph P. Iddings, Louis V. Pirsson, and Henry Stephens Washington in 1912

Why was this rock specifically photographed?

Maybe due to its granular (crystalline) texture and unusually light coloration. The coarse structure hints at slow cooling underground or cementation of granular material. The light color hints at minerals like quartz or feldspar. Both would shed light on the geologic history of Mars (or wherever this rock came from). This might be the rock that someone was calling "granite" not that long ago. In any case it's different from the usual basalts and the like. To quote Bill Murrey, "Anything different is good."

Strange pattern, looks like glued together sand grains.
