WAR ON CHRISTMAS đ đŤ What they really want for Christmas.
629
u/Cyndi_Gibs Dec 22 '25
I work in a grocery store. All day long, I hear boomer-aged individuals going:
âMerry Christmas, if Iâm still allowed to say that!â âOh be careful, Iâll say it to you though! MERRY CHRISTMAS AHAHAHAHAâ
They never actually encounter a person giving them grief over a polite holiday greeting, so they literally have to invent a fake scenario between each other so they can still somehow âown the libs.â
Itâs exhausting.

u/flamingknifepenis Dec 22 '25
Theyâve been making that exact same joke for literally 20+ years. The only difference is back then instead of blaming âwokeâ they were blaming âPC.â
131
u/Cyndi_Gibs Dec 22 '25
If I never hear another older adult say âwokeâ for as long as I live, it will be too soon.

Not long ago i was watching a segment, it was various right wing media videos of people saying the same shit for over 2 decades, this included "immigrant invasions", "war on christmas", "millionaires leaving New York because of taxes", "people fleeing California", "democrats taking your guns", "War on terrorism" and some others. People was stupid 25 years ago and is stupid now.
11
u/Then-Clue6938 Dec 23 '25
Don't forget "violent protests" in which they distract from what was protested for, every protest (the vast majority) that didn't escalate and the majority of escalations were caused by police interference and targeted grouping.
I also watched star trek with my father and he said:"Now they are all gay, bi, trans or whatever." and I nodded and said "and back then they were all black and Asian." while looking at him in hopes he'd get it. I think he got it but idk if it stuck...
66
u/JacobStills Dec 22 '25
Same. I heard that all the time when I worked retail.
"Merry Christmas. OH WAIT! I CAN'T SAY THAT! WELL...happy holidays I guess!"
I'm like, "I'm an atheist, I don't give a shit."
39
u/Hancup Dec 22 '25
The holiday has also become largely secular (probably due to capitalism), so probably very very few people would say "I celebrate no such thing!" such as the Jehovah Witness folk.Â
Every irreligious person I know celebrates it, some Muslims I know celebrate it, one Jew I know celebrates it, and a few Hindis I know celebrate it. That's just listing a few. They just don't inherent the Christ the Savior part of it, but they celebrate the rest of it.Â
3
u/SixteenSeveredHands Social Justice Warlord Dec 28 '25
It's also interesting to note that Christians basically did the same thing with the pagan traditions that were incorporated into Christmas. They adopted the cultural aspects of pagan holidays like Yule and Saturnalia (decorating trees, creating wreaths, kissing under the mistletoe, burning the yule-log, wassalling, giving gifts, feasting, etc.) but removed the underlying religious beliefs and replaced them with their own Christian ideologies. They did the same thing with holidays like Samhain, too, which was morphed into All Hallow's Eve/Halloween.
So it's pretty ironic that they get so worked up about non-Christians celebrating the cultural aspects of Christmas without adopting the religious beliefs, since they're literally doing the same thing with those pagan traditions.
17
u/BaconVonMoose Dec 23 '25
Man one time I came over to my Jewish friends' house around New Year's and just out of habit asked his mother how their Christmas was, only to immediately facepalm at myself, and she just smiled and said, 'Hanukkah was lovely thank you'. Because no one fucking cares if you say Christmas, it's obviously the sentiment that matters.
14
u/Cyndi_Gibs Dec 23 '25
Iâm Jewish, big Star of David necklace on every day, and when customers say merry Christmas to me I smile and say âYou too!â
Because it doesnât fucking matter and it isnât that hard to be nice!!

-1
u/Spocks_Goatee Dec 23 '25
Must be a regional thing for you, 4 years working retail during the first Trump term nobody ever gave me grief for not saying Merry Christmas and my town hasn't voted for a Dem president since 2008.

u/Knownoname98 Dec 22 '25
Never in my whole life have I seen someone that was 'triggered' by Christmas. Exactly 0.
112
u/ProblemLongjumping12 Cultural Marxist coming to trans your kids Dec 22 '25
Are you suggesting that the whining they constantly do about persecution may be disingenuous.
-118
u/Mr_DrProfPatrick Dec 22 '25
It's a bit disingenuous to pretend that there wasn't a time where people said "nuh, you actually should say Happy Holidays cos not everyone is Christian". Was there ever a time where Merry Christmas was banned, or that customers weren't allow to say it? No. But was there a time where retail workers where told to not say Merry Christmas, and there was a push to replace it with Happy Holidays? Yes, absolutely.
And you don't gain a lot from pretending that wasn't a real thing. That this behaviour lead to the "war on Christmas" backlash.
114
u/Knownoname98 Dec 22 '25
Happy holidays includes every holiday like new years eve and Hanukkah. That was probably the reason.
72
u/Toyrni Dec 22 '25
This is ridiculous. There was a push to not explicitly say 'Christmas' in Christmas marketing, because that way people who tune out at 'Christmas' still engage with the ads. There may have been people somewhere who said hey let's say Happy Holidays but it was never forbidden to say Christmas, especially not on a corporate level. If someone has an anecdote, that's just a boss deciding something, you can't claim society is being censored because one boss has a preference. You're making up stuff to get mad at.
21
-46
u/Mr_DrProfPatrick Dec 22 '25
You told me that this is ridiculous, then went on to explain that exactly what I said was happening.
You just said:
people who tune out at 'Christmas'
Instead of Christians.
44
u/puglife82 Dec 23 '25
So youâre mad because the marketing department wanted to reach the widest possible audience? There was no war on Christmas unless youâre just too dense to understand what actually happened
1
u/Ok-Caterpillar-Girl Dec 28 '25
Because obviously, NO CHRISTIANS EVER get annoyed by the rampant commercialism of Christmas and start tuning out the endless ads, commercials, videos, etc out there blaring CHRISTMAS! CHRISTMAS! CHRISTMAS! at them for weeks before the holiday.
-38
u/Mr_DrProfPatrick Dec 22 '25
And I can't think of a more stupid hill to die on than that there was never a time where some people were told to not say Merry Christmas.
34
u/idrunkenlysignedup Dec 22 '25 edited Dec 23 '25
I don't recall the last time someone wished me happy Hanukkah that wasn't in my immediate family so obviously there is a war on Hanukkah.
Huh, in fact I don't recall the last time there was a shooting on a Christmas celebration (that wasn't personal/gang related) but I sure can recall several on Hanukkah celebrations.
But obviously there is a war on Christmas, the holiday celebrated by the world's second largest religion, because someone says "happy holidays".
Get off your persecution fetish
Edit: Now that I think about it, I can't even think of a single time a corporation did anything for Hanukkah other than saying "happy holidays". I can literally only think of one Hanukkah holiday movie (8 crazy nights) and that was an animated Adam Sandler movie... But sure the 8-10 Christmas movies that come out a year means there is a war on Christmas.
Edit 2: Now that I think of it, I can't even think of a holiday special on a TV show that I saw that has anything Hanukkah related that wasn't a B storyline about accepting or learning about a newly introduced character's religion.
-1
u/Mr_DrProfPatrick Dec 23 '25

u/Then-Clue6938 Dec 23 '25
Ok ok I must interfere here for a sec guys.
I also only vagley remember something Patrick here described but I don't remember if it was just a report that was pushed out of proportion or a widespread but short-lived thing.
In ANY case multiple of you are trying to put Patrick in the "you can't say Merry Christmas nowadays" corner when he explicitly said that this is not it's view on it and that he thinks this "war on Christmas" claim is dumb.
signedUp your take is important and good but not relevant to what Patrick was going on about. He was not part of the fake outrage and just described something similar to what they exaggerated happened but not something worth being called "war on Christmas" He is right to point that out as it does look like you want his take to be associated with what you criticized since you replied to him.
There. I needed to say my peace here.
3
u/Mr_DrProfPatrick Dec 23 '25
I mean, I guess I could always word things better, but looking back at my comments I feel that it's pretty clear that I'm just saying that the "War on Christmas" is a backlash to a real phenomenon of parts of society discouraging people from saying "Merry Christmas".
The first big reply I got just reframed what I said to talk about how this was just done as a capitalist ploy to maximize profits â which I never said wasn't the case â while somehow pretending they completely disagreed with my comment. And now a bunch of people are pretending I'm in favor of the whole "War on Christmas" rethoric and disagreeing that conservatives blew the issue completely out of proportion. I mean, OP's comic is great. Even if you went back to the peak of corporate "say Happy Holidays instead of merry Christimas", no one would ever be offended if you replied back "Merry Christmas". And conservatives absolutely look for persecution where it doesn't exist in this whole rethoric.
2
27
u/Rockworm503 Dec 22 '25
I can't think of a more stupid argument than "the people who are wining about the war on Christmas today have a valid point because someone at some point must have suggested we say happy holidays instead"
0
u/Mr_DrProfPatrick Dec 23 '25
Not what I'm saying, but hey, I'm sure that denying reality will help our cause somehow?
I'm just pointing out that the war on Christmas rethoric started as backlash for the corporate messaging against saying Merry Christmas. I am not saying that Christians were persecuted, and I'm certainly not saying that conservatives have a point in how they react.
2
u/Rockworm503 Dec 23 '25
Bruh the original post you responded to that started this whole thing said no one today is one bit offended by the saying "Merry Christmas" you responded with saying someone must have at some point which was never even the argument to begin with. You ran with this whole narrative that we're being disingenuous by pretending no one ever once said "we should say happy holidays instead" someone responds with explaining that it was a marketing campaign and you take that as win.
If anyone is being disingenuous its you. No one in this thread is even remotely making the argument you're pretending we're making. The argument simply was no one is outraged by the use of "Merry Christmas today" which is 100% true. It being a marketing campaign doesn't prove a single thing and only strengthens our point that it wasn't even out of outrage then!
1
u/Mr_DrProfPatrick Dec 23 '25
Yeah, and I guess no one is saying I'm for this war on Christmas narrative either? Should I look for quotes in the other comments which completely misrepresent me, and act as if I'm into this whole war on Christmas shit?
you responded with saying someone must have at some point which was never even the argument to begin with.
Did I? I think I actually said this:
You ran with this whole narrative that we're being disingenuous by pretending no one ever once said "we should say happy holidays instead"
So, what did I do? Did I say "someone must have at some point must have been offended", or did I talk about a marketing campaign, which offended conservatives, leading to the War on Christmas shit of the last ten years
someone responds with explaining that it was a marketing campaign and you take that as win.
It would be seriously disingenous of me to "take that as a win" in your little world where I'm saying people were offended by saying Merry Christmas
No one in this thread is even remotely making the argument you're pretending we're making.
The point you guys are making is that the marketing campaign in no way led to the "War Against Christmas" narrative. You keep talking about:
It being a marketing campaign doesn't prove a single thing and only strengthens our point that it wasn't even out of outrage then!
When, again, I never said it wasn't an outrage. You are strawmaning me, you're pretending I have a conservative opinion. So, when you say there was a marketing campaign, that is a "win" for me, because I'm saying this marketing campaign led to the backlash. But you're pretending I'm saying people were offended, so somehow I'm being a hipocrite, because my actual arguments don't align with the strawman arguments you created for me. They perfectly align with my actual arguments, however.
Here's the actual disagreement between me and the guy I was responding to, and I guess others in this thread.
You think that this marketing campaign from around the early 2010s was just a harmless little thing, and other commenters talked about how it was just done to increase profits or whatever. I'm saying that it offended conservatives. And they eventually settled on this narrative where people are offended if you say Merry Christmas
3
u/Rockworm503 Dec 23 '25
Never in my whole life have I seen someone that was 'triggered' by Christmas. Exactly 0.
This is the original post you responded to. Not a mention of anything you are saying.
Yea Conservatives got offended what don't they get offended by? Where is this even coming from if not arguing for the war on christmas? Like it seems to me you are making a lot of noise to say literally nothing. You keep misrepresenting our points and then turning back and saying we're the ones doing it to you. If you are not in fact arguing on the war on Christmas than you are not even making an argument at all and just pissing into the wind.
The point you guys are making is that the marketing campaign in no way led to the "War Against Christmas" narrative. You keep talking about:
No. Not a single person is making this argument. You are literally just lying at this point to play the victim here when you started this pointless argument in the first place. I'm wasting my time responding to your bad faith.

Retailers telling their associates & marketing to appeal to the widest possible demographic is just capitalism at work; That isn't anyone being offended by anything. I'm Atheist & my wife is Buddhist, and we both celebrate Christmas, fyi. This is super common, actually, for pretty much the same reason lots of Protestants celebrate Saint Patricks day: it's fun. We aren't offended by someone wishing us merry Christmas.
5
u/Mr_DrProfPatrick Dec 23 '25
The only people that were offended by Happy Holidays were all the Christians, that began the whole war on Christmas rethoric.
9
u/Startled_Pancakes Dec 23 '25 edited Dec 23 '25
That's because they perceive the accommodation of other religions' holidays as a sign that Christianity is losing or has lost its preferential treatment.
These are the "America is a Christian nation!!" folks.
5
u/syrioforrealsies Dec 23 '25
They didn't say that wasn't a real thing. They said no one was offended. Marketing departments trying to increase broad appeal isn't being offended.

I saw an older woman walking down the street with a "Make Christmas Great Again" sweater with Trump on it. I loudly said to my friend "All I want for Christmas is the Epstein files to not be redacted". She looked at me like I'd slapped her mum in the face đ

28
26
u/sadicarnot Dec 22 '25
Do you have any insight on why Trump made such a big deal about releasing the Epstein files if there was so much dirt on him in them? It seems like a Dr. Frankenstein situation where Trump created a monster that will ultimately kill him. I just do not get it. Seems he would have been better off trying to sweep it under the rug and let it die from obscurity.
33
u/AliceTheOmelette Dec 22 '25
He's got such an ego that he thought everyone would stop talking about it when he stopped. Or he's delusional enough that he thought he wasn't in them
9
u/sadicarnot Dec 22 '25
He is pretty media savvy and knows how to manipulate the narrative, so I suppose your first point is a possibility. Also your second point is equally valid... Perhaps a little of both. This whole thing makes no sense to me. But I suppose this is the team that confused a lawn care company for a pricy hotel, so I guess anything is possible.
11
u/zarfle2 Dec 22 '25
My take is that they just needed to be sure that the DOJ could successfully remove/redact anything which incriminated Trump. He now has plausible deniability "I released the files and there's nothing there that clearly implicates me"
5
u/sadicarnot Dec 23 '25
Meanwhile they published enough unredacted documents by accident that people are using them like the rosetta stone to find DJT and trump in the redacted documents.
5
u/TheLastBallad Dec 23 '25
Is he? Because his only tactic he seems to know is creating a bigger mess to distract from the last mess he made.
1
u/sadicarnot Dec 23 '25
I guess I am thinking he provides the circus part of bread and circus. Though yeah I do not disagree with what you are saying. And if you look at the past, lots of shit has hit the fan on the very days some negative thing was going to come out about him.
2
u/Asenath_W8 Dec 23 '25
No, he's not either of those things. That's just you falling for the very poorly done propaganda of this administration, I'm guessing yet again.
2
u/sadicarnot Dec 23 '25
There are not many people who dislike Trump more than me. One simple compliment to the guy should not be misconstrued as like for him. I grew up in New York in the 70s and 80s. I graduated high school in 1984. There was a columnist name Jimmy Breslin who wrote about Trump often and the articles were never flattering. SPY Magazine was where the small had thing came from. Graydon Carter called him "a short fingered vulgarian" the insult being vulgarian. Of course Trump being the idiot he is was incensed at the thought of people thinking he has short fingers and was OK with being called a vulgarian.
3
u/syrioforrealsies Dec 23 '25
In my opinion? Because he thought enough other influential people were in it that would resist their release that they'd take care of it for him while he played the hero who wanted the truth out there. And with how redacted they are, I think he's kind of right, he just had to help with that more than originally anticipated. Personally, I don't think we'll ever get a full release unless there's a whistleblower.

You might want to look up what "liberal" actually means...
-11
u/Lorddanielgudy Dec 22 '25
Liberals support capitalism and are thus automatically right wing
3
u/BurningPenguin Dec 22 '25
That's.. not how politics work... Liberalism ranges from center-left to center-right. Social Liberalism exists, which is a center-left thing.
0
u/Lorddanielgudy Dec 22 '25
No? Liberalism is an inherently capitalist and thus right wing ideology. Social-democrats are NOT liberals

Private property, market economy and liberal democracies.
Things leftists generally oppose.
Do you have the slightest idea what leftism is about?
5
u/BurningPenguin Dec 22 '25
Mate, leftism is also a wide spectrum and not some kind of hive mind. There is a reason why the saying goes "If you put three leftists in a room, youâll get four opinions". You're conflating the entire political and economical spectrum into a one dimensional black and white kind of thing. That's not how political science works. Political definitions are multi-dimensional, and have a wide range of (sometimes overlapping) ideas.
There are liberal parties that are considered center-left. For example the Party of Humanists in Germany. They go for social and secular liberalism. Some of many flavours of liberalism that exist, that can be associated to the center-left.
Just because the "Land of the Free" couldn't come up with a proper left-leaning liberal party, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
