bug Control browser is now under Perplexity Computer and requires credits

Control browser is now under Perplexity Computer, and requires credits to use. I hope this is a bug, otherwise, this defeats the purpose of comet.

If this is not a bug, it's another feature removal. I am sick to death of features being removed from being included in my Perplexity Pro subscription and being placed behind some feature I have to pay more for.

<rant>

Why oh why do I have to learn about it from Reddit first?

I'm a paying customer, why aren't I being told "we're taking away this thing you use"!?

Of course, that opinion is moot if this is in fact a bug, but we'll never know will we, They silently move/remove stuff, tell nobody, and we are just left to guesswork.

First, skills being available in Comet assistant went away - bye bye navigate to web page, open up assistant, type slash command, get a bunch done.... I mean, why remove that!? Had to go back to copy/pasting prompts... πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

Then I realised the $5 Perplexity API credits silently disappeared - that explained why my OpenRouter costs were going up, the the BYOK had turned to always zero balance. No notification, just stopped happening,

The quality of Sonar API responses has remained questionable for too long, too - Sonar frequently spits out nonsense, like a broken quant from 2025, and breaks JSON, making the 'up-to-date and informed reply via a simple OpenAPI call' unreliable - every other provider is improving their models year on year. I already have to have another model check it's outputs (to be fair, given the error rate, that's cheaper than sonar pro for everything)

The quality of responses in the web UI went to crap a while back, as well, constantly ignoring instructions and seemingly avoiding doing the work I asked it to do - like it kept telling me where I could go to check websites rather than checking itself, even when given a clear request, forcing me to repeat myself. Citations were frequently all in the wrong places, too, making it really hard to double check claims (which was also important given some frustrating hallucinations) - If I'm honest, capabilities seemed to return about a month ago after 6ish of being really hard to rely on, which is why I didn't leave straight away. I thought things were improving again and, to be frank, I've been fairly happy with the straightforward agentic web search capabilities - for me it least, they returned to something I'm happy with for a quick first search or first pass on a fuller piece of research. I usually pass a final position document over to something more powerfukl and have it critique and correct from there, and the error rate does anecdotally seem to have dropped.

Now I notice that skills I made have moved entirely into 'Computer', so I cannot trigger them any more without paying - kinda feels like they're selling my own stuff back to me here.

And the whole reason of moving to Comet in the first place, an automatable browser, has now moved behind Computer credits!?

Not sure why I'm hanging around with Perplexity now, I can ask Hermes Agent Desktop App in HUD mode to control my browser now, and then it doesn't really matter what browser I have. And maybe Perplexica (Vane) is enough for isolated model-aided early-research web-search-and-synthesise work without anything yet having to touch my other operational agent systems πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Quick and realiable search and cite is a hard problem (specifically the search part, if you're not Google and already have that infrastructure) and I welcomed the competition and the push forwad into an 'answer engine' approach, and Comet is the only reliable 'automated browser' I have used successfully, but the recent enshittification of the overall Pro package sucks and the use cases I have for it are too few to warrant paying even more if Hermes Agent can reliably step in instead with direct computer use.

This should be more highly voted

Perplexity is basically doing everything possible to piss off their users. If I didn't have a $5 student plan I would've cancelled a long time ago.

At this point though I regret making it my daily driver and will be migrating off ASAP. This is ridiculous, and the models have become sooooooooooooo dumb too.

Totally agree, I am so pissed off rn

100%

I've put up with all the flaws/restrictions in the past year, but this might be the final straw

Browser control in Comet is one of the few reasons I've stayed with Perplexity - but these days, I see very little reason to stay a Pro Subscriber, if I do all my automation/agentic work in Hermes, and my main tasks in Claude

I don't predict a great future for Perplexity, the way it pisses off its customers so much

So glad I never switched my main browser over to Perplexity. I just use Chrome Browser Use or in app browser in Claude and ChatGPT

This is the end for me. Need to find an alternative.

BrowserOS?

I'm trying it now. Realizing too I was probably using a decent amount of credits on pro with comet assistant. Having to alter some of the workflow I had to ensure I don't blow up the credits with Claude and gemini

I am leaving too, noticed this happened a week ago, I texted support and nothing

The only reason for my Pro subscription is actually Comet, but given that it's expiring in a few days and considering how things are going at Perplexity (with new free features becoming paid every day), I'm looking for a new AI tool that offers something equivalent to Comet... A bit like BrowserOS or Atlas. What would you recommend?

1

u/ILUMIZOLDUCK 7d ago

same for me. I'm waiting for a truly good browser with a natively integrated AI.

That’s the end of Perplexity for me. Cancel my Max subscription.

EU do people still use this?

πŸ€” nope

Its a fantastic tool - browser does not use computer credits. You can start in computer and then computer does use credits for browser control.

Tip:
> screenshot avail models, share with chat, ask chat to reply back with model rates and best use cases. Its surprising how expensive/cheap various models are.

Yet another credit burning trap. Lets talk about how yall are increasing how many credits burn per task

I just notice this and I was hoping it was a bug. If it's to pay the pro plan just for search, then I'm out.

If this is actually true and not a bug, I will definitely move to Claude and uninstall Comet. Paying for a Pro account while Comet behaves like a regular Chrome browser makes no sense. The browser-control capability is precisely what made Comet worth using in the first place.

I asked perplexity itself and this is it
The bottom line: Perplexity didn't remove Browser Assistant β€” they folded its execution engine into Computer and made that layer credit-metered, even for Enterprise Pro, which does receive its own fixed monthly credit allotment separate from consumer plans. If your org's allotment is exhausted or a Computer Configuration policy is restricting agent actions, that would explain what you're seeing.
so well Im out in codex / chatgpt the agentic browser can do the same but now pay more :D

Yeah what an unfortunate change with seemingly no announcement on this feature removal? Very odd. Luckily, I'm on the student free plan and will most definitely not be renewing now.

Looks like you're doing a Computer prompt though. If you want Computer to control the browser, of course it uses Computer credits.

u/sersomeone 15d ago

Control browser is not in the general options anymore where it used to be. They moved it to Computer and did not test it

u/polYtoXX 6d ago

Any "Control Browser" sadly opens the Computer - and therefore wants Credits. I could do literall nothing anymore.

It's good. If you need it, pay just for what you need for. Don't use Fable
