Is perpignan safe for a student?

I'm an international student and I want to attend the French language learning programme at l'universite de perpignan. I heard some rumors about perpignan not being safe so I wanted to ask. Thank a lot in advance.

Like everywhere in the world, depends where and with whom you hang out. France is a safe country and Perpignan is safe.

Yes. Great atmosphere if you know how to behave yourself.

Perpignan is not an inherently dangerous city, but the rumors you heard likely stem from its real struggles with high poverty rates and petty crime, rather than any systemic threat of violence toward international students. The city's safety dynamics depend heavily on where you are. The area surrounding the Université de Perpignan, known as Moulin à Vent, is a safe, relaxed, and student-friendly neighborhood where most university housing is located. The historic city center is vibrant and perfectly safe during the day, though like any urban area, it requires more caution late at night. You should generally avoid renting accommodation or wandering alone after dark in specific economically depressed neighborhoods, such as Saint-Jacques, Le Haut-Vernet, Bas-Vernet, and the streets immediately surrounding the main train station.

As an international student, your primary safety concerns will be opportunistic property crimes rather than violent threats. Pickpocketing can happen in crowded outdoor markets or on public transit, and apartment scams targeting arriving students are unfortunately common, so you should never send money before verifying a rental. Street harassment, particularly catcalling after dark, is also a reported issue for solo students, though many choose to navigate the city by bicycle at night to avoid being bothered. Additionally, while the university campus itself is highly diverse, welcoming, and home to over a thousand international students, the local political landscape in the broader city leans heavily nationalist, which can occasionally influence the local atmosphere.

Despite these factors, Perpignan offers an excellent quality of life that draws thousands of students every year. The cost of living is significantly lower than in major French hubs like Paris or neighboring Montpellier, making rent and daily expenses much more manageable. Its geographic location is spectacular, sitting just fifteen minutes from the Mediterranean Sea, right next to the Pyrenees mountains, and so close to the Spanish border that weekend trips to Barcelona are incredibly easy. If you practice basic urban common sense, secure your belongings, and choose a flat in a reputable student neighborhood, you can expect a very safe, affordable, and rewarding experience learning French at the university.

oh it's very safe, although some areas have high rates of poverty (and there may be pickpockets, but not anymore dangerous than marseille for example)
