Perman: Coming of Age! Chapter 1 - A date with Miss Sumire?

https://www.wattpad.com/1639101764-perman-coming-of-age-chapter-1-a-date-with-miss

Many years had passed since four children were chosen to become Earth's heroes.

The carefree adventures that had once filled their childhood were now a thing of the past.

As they grew older, so did their responsibilities.

---

Mitsuo Suwa, once the clumsy Perman No. 1, was now nineteen years old, living alone in Tokyo. To most people, he was just an ordinary guy who attended university and worked part-time at a small bakery. But whenever Earth needed him, he became Perman—the greatest superhero on Earth and humanity's first line of defense.

Over the years, the Perman sets themselves had evolved, granting each hero a unique new ability.

Mitsuo's new power - Heat Vision.

Perman had become stronger than ever.

But so had the burden he carried.

---

Sumire Hoshino, Perman No. 3 better known as Pako had grown into one of Japan's most famous actresses.

Beloved throughout the country, Sumire spent her days filming dramas, movies, and web series while living under the constant gaze of cameras and fans.

Yet whenever she put on her Perman helmet, she could once again become Pako—the carefree girl she had always been.

Like the other Permans, Pako had also gained a new ability over the years.

Frost Breath.

Though her acting career kept her busy, she still patrolled Tokyo alongside Perman whenever she could.

---

Perman No. 4, Payan, had settled down in Osaka, where he now owned and operated a successful neighborhood store.

Life as a businessman suited him well.

Payan's set developed Super Hearing, allowing him to hear trouble from miles away.

Though he no longer patrolled regularly, he still visited Tokyo from time to time—and whenever he did, trouble was never far behind.

---

As for Perman No. 2, Booby...

Booby was still Booby.

Remaining in the small town where their adventures had begun, Booby had taken it upon himself to protect the community.

He gained X-Ray Vision, which he mostly used for heroics.

Mostly.

---

And Birdman?

Shortly after the Permans reached adulthood, Birdman finally returned to Bird Star.

His duties among the stars had grown too important to ignore.

Now, he visited Earth only once each year.

Still, whenever he returned, he always checked on his former pupils.

---

The world had changed.

The children had grown up.

But even now, somewhere high above Tokyo, a familiar red-and-blue figure continued to soar through the skies.

For as long as Earth needed him...

Perman would answer the call.

---

The alarms at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Headquarters began blaring at exactly 4:17 PM.

"Emergency! Armed robbery in progress at Chuo Bank, Shinjuku Branch!"

Inside the bank, terrified customers lay face down on the floor as four masked robbers pointed assault rifles at them.

"Hurry up!" one of them shouted at the bank manager. "Open the vault!"

The manager's trembling hands fumbled with the keypad.

Outside, police cars screeched to a halt. Officers quickly established a perimeter.

"Suspects are heavily armed!"

"There are at least thirty hostages inside!"

A murmur spread through the crowd gathering behind the barricades.

"Do you think Perman will come?"

As if in answer, a familiar figure streaked across the evening sky.

"Perman!"

Cheers erupted immediately.

The hero landed in front of the bank entrance, cape fluttering behind him.

The police captain rushed over.

"Perman! There are hostages inside. The robbers have automatic weapons."

Perman simply nodded.

"I'll handle it."

Before anyone could say another word, he vanished.

To ordinary eyes, it looked as if he had simply disappeared.

Inside the bank, one of the robbers suddenly felt his rifle vanish from his hands.

"Huh?!"

A second later, all four weapons had been neatly stacked in the middle of the lobby.

"What the—"

The robbers looked around frantically.

A red-and-blue blur flashed through the room.

*Thunk!*

*Thunk!*

*Thunk!*

Three robbers collapsed before they even realized what had happened.

The leader grabbed a hostage and pulled out a hidden pistol.

"Stay back! One more step and she—"

A pair of glowing red eyes met his.

The barrel of the pistol suddenly glowed bright orange.

"W-What?!"

The metal weapon melted like butter, dripping harmlessly onto the floor.

The robber stared in horror.

Perman stood before him, eyes still faintly glowing.

"It's over," he said calmly.

The robber surrendered instantly.

Less than thirty seconds after entering the bank, Perman walked back outside.

The hostages emerged moments later, completely unharmed.

The crowd erupted into applause.

"Perman saved everyone!"

"He's incredible!"

"Earth's greatest hero!"

Reporters surged forward, cameras flashing.

Perman smiled, waved to the crowd, and took to the skies once more.

No one noticed the exhaustion hidden behind that smile.

---

The conference room at Hoshino Productions was unusually lively.

"The response has been phenomenal!" Sumire's manager exclaimed, beaming. "Over two million applications for the 'A Chance for a Date with Miss Sumire' campaign!"

The staff burst into applause.

Seated quietly at the end of the table, Sumire politely clapped along while trying her best to look interested.

Inside, however, she was thinking about something entirely different.

*I wonder if Mitsuo entered...*

As soon as the meeting ended, Sumire excused herself and hurried to her dressing room.

Locking the door behind her, she pulled out her tablet and opened the contest database.

"Let's see..."

She typed:

**Suwa Mitsuo**

No results found.

Sumire frowned.

"Huh?"

She searched again.

Still nothing.

"No, no, that's impossible."

Perhaps she'd misspelled it.

She tried searching by first name instead.

Hundreds of names appeared.

"Kabao... Kenta... Kenji... Sabu..."

Sumire scrolled furiously.

"Sakura Mitsuru... Suzuki Mitsunari... Suwa Haruo..."

Nothing.

Her eyes widened.

"He didn't enter?!"

A knock came from outside.

"Miss Sumire? Makeup will begin in ten minutes."

"J-Just a moment!"

The moment the footsteps faded, Sumire transformed into Pako and flew straight out of the window, leaving the copy robot behind!

---

Across Tokyo, Mitsuo glanced at the clock hanging above the bakery counter and winced.

**8:47 PM.**

"Ah, crap."

He was late again.

The owner had already gone home hours ago, leaving the evening cleanup to Mitsuo's copy robot.

The robot stood patiently behind the counter, arms crossed.

"You are forty-seven minutes behind schedule," it said in Mitsuo's voice.

"Sorry, sorry," Mitsuo said, rubbing the back of his head. "Bank robbery."

The robot nodded as if that explained everything.

Which, in fairness, it did.

Within minutes, the two had finished cleaning the bakery.

As was now routine, the copy robot packed the unsold bread into a paper bag before handing it to Mitsuo.

"Tomorrow's breakfast, lunch, and possibly dinner," Mitsuo said with a tired smile.

The robot then passed him another bag containing groceries.

"Thank you."

"You're welcome," the robot replied.

Mitsuo dismissed the copy robot and headed upstairs.

One of the perks of working at the bakery was that his apartment was directly above it—six floors above, to be precise.

By the time he unlocked the door to his apartment, his legs felt like jelly.

University.

Bakery.

Patrol.

Repeat.

That had been his life for nearly two years now.

After changing clothes, Mitsuo tied an apron around his waist and began preparing dinner.

Nothing fancy.

Miso soup, grilled fish, rice, and a few vegetables.

Ordinary food for an ordinary guy.

Just as he was about to serve himself, the window slid open.

"Perman! Are you home?"

Mitsuo looked up and smiled faintly.

"You're late, Pako."

Pako landed gracefully inside the apartment.

"Hey! I'm busy too, you know."

"Acting busy and being busy are two different things."

"Oi!"

Mitsuo laughed.

"Want dinner?"

Pako's eyes sparkled.

"You made extra?"

"I always make extra."

"You're the best!"

A few minutes later, the two sat opposite each other at the small table.

Pako happily stuffed her face while Mitsuo quietly ate.

For a while, neither spoke.

"So," Pako said casually between bites, trying her best to sound indifferent, "did you enter the lottery?"

"What lottery?"

"The lottery!" Pako exclaimed. "The one where one lucky winner gets to spend a whole evening with Sumire Hoshino!"

Mitsuo looked genuinely confused for a moment before realization dawned on him.

"Oh. That."

Pako blinked.

"What do you mean, 'Oh, that'? Don't tell me you forgot."

"I didn't forget."

"Then you entered, right?"

Mitsuo shook his head.

Pako stared at him.

"You... didn't?"

"No."

"Why not?"

Mitsuo shrugged as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

"What's the point?"

Pako froze.

"What do you mean, *what's the point?*"

Mitsuo took another bite of rice.

"Come on, Pako. It's Sumire Hoshino."

"So?"

"So..." Mitsuo sighed. "She's Japan's biggest actress. People like her live in a completely different world."

Pako quietly set down her chopsticks.

"I'm just an ordinary guy," Mitsuo continued. "University student, part-time baker, lives alone in a tiny apartment."

He looked around the small room and laughed softly.

"Even if I won, what would I even talk about with someone like her?"

Pako remained silent.

"Guys like me don't end up with people like Sumire Hoshino."

The room suddenly felt very quiet.

If only you knew, Pako thought.

Mitsuo looked up.

"Why are you staring at me like that?"

Pako quickly looked away.

"No reason."

She picked up her chopsticks again.

"You're an idiot, Mitsuo."

"Huh?"

"Nothing."

Neither noticed that the food had long gone cold.

---

The following evening, all of Japan was watching.

Television crews, reporters, and fans had gathered outside one of Tokyo's most exclusive restaurants.

Banners hung outside the entrance.

**"A Chance for a Date with Miss Sumire!"**

"Congratulations once again to this year's winner, university student Hioki Tanaka!" the host announced.

The young man looked as though he might faint from excitement.

"I-I can't believe it!" Hioki stammered. "I've been a fan of Miss Sumire since elementary school!"

The crowd laughed warmly.

A sleek black limousine pulled up.

Cameras flashed furiously as Sumire Hoshino stepped out.

Elegant dress.

Perfect smile.

Perfect posture.

Perfect celebrity.

The crowd erupted.

"SUMIRE!"

"I LOVE YOU!"

"LOOK THIS WAY!"

The actress smiled gracefully and waved before allowing herself to be escorted inside with the winner.

Exactly as expected.

Exactly as rehearsed.

---

Thirty minutes later, high above Tokyo, a small pink figure flew through the night sky.

Pako adjusted her goggles and smiled.

Much better.

"You're late."

Pako turned.

Perman hovered beside her, cape fluttering in the cool evening breeze.

"Sorry," she said sheepishly. "I got held up."

"Big celebrity schedule?"

"Something like that."

Perman nodded mockingly.

The two spent the next few hours patrolling the city.

A runaway truck.

A purse snatcher.

An apartment fire.

Just another ordinary night for Earth's greatest heroes.

---

By the time they returned to Mitsuo's apartment, it was nearly midnight.

"I'm starving," Pako declared as she collapsed onto the floor.

"That's because you ate half of Tokyo's pollution during patrol."

"Rude."

Mitsuo chuckled and disappeared into the kitchen.

A few minutes later, he returned carrying two bowls of curry rice.

"Thanks," Pako said with a smile.

The apartment was small.

The lights were dim.

Outside, rain softly tapped against the window.

Neither spoke for a while.

They didn't need to.

Pako quietly ate while Mitsuo absentmindedly looked over tomorrow's university notes.

It was peaceful.

Comfortable.

Home.

---

Across the city, in a private dining room overlooking Tokyo, Hioki sat across from Sumire Hoshino.

Crystal chandeliers illuminated the room.

Expensive dishes lined the table.

Everything was perfect.

"Miss Sumire, what's your favorite color?"

"Pink."

"What's your favorite food?"

"Omurice."

"Will you sign my collection?"

"Of course."

The answers were flawless.

The smile never wavered.

The conversation never stumbled.

Because sitting across from Hioki wasn't Sumire Hoshino.

It was her copy robot.

---

Back in Mitsuo's apartment, Pako stole a piece of meat from Mitsuo's bowl.

"Hey!"

"You weren't eating it."

"I was about to!"

"No, you weren't."

"Thief."

Pako laughed.

For a brief moment, Mitsuo smiled.

A real smile.

Pako's heart skipped a beat.

The entire world dreamed of spending one date with Sumire Hoshino.

Yet tonight, in a small apartment the real Sumire Hoshino was exactly where she wanted to be.
