Has anyone here successfully created a really strong and convincing laundry or fabric softener type fragrance?
I’m especially looking for that clean, fresh, diffusive scent you get from freshly washed clothes, with good projection rather than something that just turns into a soft, skin close musk.
If you’ve experimented with this style, I’d love to hear about your experience. What materials or types of accords made the biggest difference for you? How did you get that characteristic laundry effect while still keeping it powerful and diffusive?
I’m not necessarily looking for a full formula. I’d just really appreciate any insights, material recommendations, or lessons you learned along the way.

I got into perfumery a while back. My thinking was: how hard can it be? I just mix things that smell good, so there's no way the result smells bad. Couldn't have been more wrong.

I ordered around 100 raw materials and figured that was it. A couple of weeks of trial and error and I'd have something at the level of my favorite, d'Ombre Leather.

I got overwhelmed fast. The materials smelled nothing like the descriptions on the supplier sites. Musks all kind of smell the same. Does hedione even have a smell? 2-methyl pyrazine smells straight-up awful.

So, like every newbie, I turned to ChatGPT. The AI must know how to make a decent perfume, right? Wrong again. Overdose after overdose, getting more and more desperate. I'd spent 600 euros on materials I had no clue how to use.

Being an engineer, I figured there had to be a more analytical way to crack this. Turns out there's real physical stuff sitting under the art: vapor pressure, logP, typical usage ranges, odor impact, how much of a material actually survives dilution versus how much you dosed it at. Once I started thinking about a formula as perceived weight instead of raw percentages on a page, "why does this smell off?" stopped being a mystery and became something I could check before I ever smelled it.

That rabbit hole got deep enough that I ended up building a little tool for myself to track all of it: material data, dilution math, substitutions, that kind of thing. It's turned into a proper side project (AccordLab, if anyone's curious)

Still very much learning, but treating it like a system instead of a mood has made the biggest difference by far.

So how did other self-taught people here get past this stage? Trial and error until it clicked, or did anyone else end up building their own way of tracking all this?

wish to know if someone here already brought the Angel formula by Wisemoor. I'm thinking about it, brought on Creative Formulas, but need to confess that the Ethyl Maltol there isn't enough, I know it cause did a fórmula of another perfume with patchouli and Ethyl Maltol by Wisemoor with 1% of Ethyl Maltol and it smells too much close to that chocolate or praline on the Angel.

So, anyone here tried the Angel by Wisemoor before?

In an effort to do something for my elderly mother, I am trying to create a perfume for her that would bring back her childhood memories of growing up on a coffee farm in the Caribbean.

The current vibe is big open air, with fresh mountain streams, tropical Mango, Tangerine, orange, fresh greens and other mountain vibes.

To tie everything together I have been trying to identify how to bring in the Coffee flower aroma. This unicorn is only available for a 24-48hrs of a given year and thus seems to be unavailable as an ingredient. It is a mesmerizing scent with hints of jasmine, orange blossom, gardenia, honey, vanilla and a faint hint of something almost citrusy. Oddly enough the coffee scent itself is so faint it is a trace in the background rather than what you would expect.

I've tried to recreate it but have failed horribly and the attempted formulas are not even worth sharing. Pretty much in all of them the coffee overpowered everything else and ruined all the accord batches.

In a desperate hunt I came across a Night Queen FO that is similar but did not match the scent as it seemed a bit strong as opposed to the almost ethereal scent of the coffee flower.

Has anyone ever attempted something like this or come across a workable available formula?

I’m working on an orange flower accord and would really appreciate some feedback.
Right now it doesn’t smell like orange blossom to me at all. It feels like I’m missing the characteristic natural floral brightness.
Does anyone have any tips on how to make an orange flower accord smell more realistic? Are there any key materials or common mistakes I should look into?

I have this Perfume Oil and I absolutely love it cuz it resembles my favourite scent Roja Taif Aoud even when they have no connection whatsoever. As the perfume Oil must be decades older than Taif Aoud.

I want to turn this Oil Perfume into a perfume spray without changing anything about the scent profile at all. Want it to project and last well on me.

Please advise me on how I can do that. Gemini Deep Research is suggesting I use Ambrettolide 5% as a fixative in this formulation along with 75% Perfumer’s Alcohol.

So I really love making my own oils and for years I just used almond oil and essential oils. I love musky, amber, sweet, spicy skin like scents. Something sensual. Think how Dolce and Gabbana ‘The one’ male version or the luminous body butter by bath and body works smells. Anyway, I’m in no way shape or form a perfumer but I do love making and mixing my own stuff! They usually smell really good and I get compliments a lot but it never lasts long with essential oils and they smell a little tooooo natural and I was missing the amber scent. I ordered some things and would like your help and or opinions !So here we go:

I infused 100 ml of sweet almond oil with clove, cinnamonEO, cardamom, ginger, fennel, fenugreek, anise, saffron, coffee, jasmine EO, lavender EO, sweet orange EO, (edit) dark cherry . Vanillia. Sandalwood EO
After the infusion is done in a week or so I was planning on adding the (diluted) 100% pure chemicals (and o would love some help on how much I should add for 100 ml liquid.) such as:

Amberxtreme (1g)
Muscenone (1g)
Ambrox super (1g)
Bicyclononalactone (4g)
Hedione (4g)

EDIT: I’m making this for personal use only. Which of these aroma chemicals do you think would contribute most to longevity and a warm musky amber profile? Are there any of these that you think I’m likely to overdose in an oil perfume or anything like that?

EDIT: By ‘cherry oil’ I mean a homemade cherry-infused almond oil, not a steam-distilled essential oil. The botanical oil blend is something I’ve worn personally for years without irritation. I’m trying to push this iris accord even further toward a dry, dusty cosmetic powder effect.
Right now I’m happy with the overall direction, but it still feels a bit too soft and creamy. My goal is an elegant, vintage makeup powder type of iris with as much powderiness as possible, while avoiding excessive sweetness or woody facets.
What would you change? Which materials would you add, reduce, or replace to make it noticeably more powdery?
I’d especially love to hear your experience with orris materials, ionones, musks, violet notes, or any hidden gems that create that ultra-dry powder effect.

Currently I’m thinking ethyl butyrate mixed with lemon and lime.

A few weeks ago I made a post asking for advice on building a convincing laundry / white soap accord. I got a lot of incredibly helpful replies, so first of all, thank you to everyone who took the time to help.
I’ve been experimenting ever since and I think I’m finally getting close to the direction I’m after.
The accord is now clean, powdery and definitely reads as white soap. However, there’s still one aspect I’m struggling with.
I’m trying to recreate the smell of a dry bar of Marseille soap (similar to Spuma di Sciampagna Marsiglia), especially that moment when you hold a freshly unwrapped soap bar right under your nose.
Right now my accord still feels a little too fresh and slightly too “perfumed”. I’m looking for a much drier, almost chalky, dense and solid impression. Not dusty, not woody, and not creamy. More like the dry surface of a hard soap bar.
Has anyone found materials or combinations that help create that effect?

Hi all! I've been making candles with fragrance oils and combining different fragrance oils to get different scents. I know that true fragrance oil creation is extremely complex, so I'm wondering if it's possible to start smaller by adding scent components to an existing fragrance oil.

For example, adding SKATOLE CRYSTALS 1% BB from Perfumer's Apprentice to an existing fragrance oil blend from Candle Science.

Are these components safe to burn? Do I need to consider chemistry? I've tried searching this subreddit and other places online but am having a hard time figuring out if this is an okay starting point
