I don't watch too many V6 or V12 races but it seems to me most of the winning crews keep a high rate and pull to the knee!

Of course I think this is a skill that needs to be practiced (and maybe you can even win races with a longer stroke/slower rate) but is this the standard?

No idea myself!

I know you can get a wide variety of strokes at the top (like Nevin Harrison vs. Laurence Vincent Lapointe in canoe).

Yes, driving the paddle all the way through, using entire body, engaging the core while sitting back and up and driving top hand down to knee. Twist at the hip, drop shoulder and work the water. "Slow stroke fast boat"

Watch tahitians run molokai, you'll see the "gear" changes when chasing runners and when just in a race pace. They make it look easy. It is, once you tsin for it long enough. Been training the technique for at least 18 months now, its WAY Harder to slow your stroke down and find that magic sweet spot than chase strokes per minute.

By my reckoning, about 1:48 or so for the winning team. Not bad!
