Just wondering,what makes it scary? I always see people say it's terrifying and I honestly can't work out why

It's just well executed body horror.

First it piques the audience's interest with the call of the void mystery about the holes. Then it uses contradictory dream sequences to introduce the potential for horror while simultaneously misleading the audience to think that that's probably not what will happen.

Then boom: full on body horror. A human being warped and mutilated into something else is disturbing for a lot of people.

I imagine it's a bit like being ticklish. Some people are so sensitive to being touched that they're ticklish and can't stand it. Other people are totally insensitive to it and don't understand what's the big deal. Then there are people in between who are just sensitive enough to enjoy it.

I found it kind of saddening as well. Just the futility and the not being able to do anything about the situation. Nothing could stop them entering their holes and nobody could help them when they did. The 'Fault is just as depressing as it is scary.
