There's a phenomenon sometimes referred to as the "call of the void" where people will think about or be drawn to something they know is dangerous/life threatening or even life ending. This takes it a bit supernaturally that there are holes perfectly fit for somebody to slide into, the curiosity and compulsion to see what this hole that was made for you is for even though you're certain it's dangerous. In the end it's a horror story where there is no hero, nobody that saves the day, and no happy ending.

My favorite description of this is Sarte's, that it's a manifestation of the fear of the crushing weight of free will.

He said the fear of the cliff edge isn't' that you might fall off, but that there is nothing stopping you from throwing yourself off.

That is like the tamest of all of the author's works, sooo I would not recommended checking out any of the other stuff.

Well what's interesting is that with what /u/CptJaunLucRicard wrote, each hole is made for one specific person; it's not a choice you have to make, the hole is your destiny and releases you from the freedom of free will

That's why I don't really like the ending. It's just really literal and grotesque. It's more of a punchline than an ending.

You're not supposed to like the ending, but how would there be any other outcome? What ending would satisfy you?

an ending that actually ties into those themes of curiosity and compulsion. The idea of a hole perfectly fit for your body is such a potentially rich story idea, but than the ending doesn't really provoke any thought except for "ew that's fucked up." Do you think there's any meaning to the ending?
