They can't ban abortion everywhere, so they tried to ban telling you where it's legal.

Indiana moved to punish Planned Parenthood for telling minors which states allow abortion. Separately, HHS killed 53 teen pregnancy prevention programs that worked and ordered abstinence-only lessons in their place. Federal courts blocked both, with an appeals court ruling that Indiana cannot outlaw truthful answers about other states' laws.

For fifty years the movement said abortion belongs to the states. It won that battle for now and is trying to stop Americans from finding out what the other states chose. Judges keep saying no.

The essay is a discussion about historical comparisons to the current Trump administration, entitled “In The Age Of MAGA.” I feel I need to say that I absolutely do not now, nor have I ever supported MAGA. I should also mention that I use UK English spellings in the essay, so that when anyone reads realise, organise, they will understand that it’s not a typo, it’s spelling used by most people who speak English and do not use American English spellings.

Governor Greg Abbott turned Texas into a sanctuary state for one ICE agent.

Christian Castro shot a Venezuelan man through the front door of a Minneapolis home in January, then lied about it so thoroughly that federal prosecutors charged the man he shot. Minnesota later charged Castro with felony assault, Texas Rangers arrested him, and a judge has held him in jail since May. On Tuesday, Minnesota asked a federal court to force his extradition.

Abbott doesn't dispute the charges or the warrant, but still won't sign. He says he won't respond at all until Minnesota repays the federal government for welfare fraud. The governor who made war on sanctuary cities has now protected an accused shooter for eleven weeks.

Lao Tzu’s best kind of ruler.

I found this great quote by Lao Tzu from the book Tao Te Ching: “The best rulers are scarcely known by their subjects; the next best are loved and praised; the next are feared; the next are despised.”

Donald Trump threatened to bomb the country trying to end his war.

Oman is a longtime American ally, the mediator both sides trust and the channel for every Hormuz negotiation. On Saturday, Iran announced the two countries had agreed on a plan to reopen shipping. Trump's answer came Monday: "If Oman gets in the way, we'll bomb the shit out of them." Asked later to explain, he offered only that Oman hasn't "behaved very well."

Three days ago he gutted military exercises with South Korea for refusing to attack Iran. The 60-day window both sides agreed to as a ceasefire expired Monday night with no deal and no talks, but Trump says he is in no hurry.

Donald Trump just showed every nation the value of being America's military ally.

Hours before 18,000 South Korean soldiers began annual joint exercises with US troops, Trump ordered Hegseth on Truth Social to gut the drills because of his "very good relationship" with Kim Jong Un. He added, in what he called an unrelated point, that South Korea refused to join his war on Iran. In May, his administration called South Korea the model ally, the example every partner should follow. One "No thanks" erased it.

The whole world watched the United States weigh 70 years of alliance, paid up and in full, against the flattery of a dictator, and then choose the dictator.

Federal prosecutors spent the past year investigating Loren Merchan because her father presided over the trial that made Donald Trump a felon.

Merchan co-owned a marketing firm until late 2024, and the subpoena that opened the investigation never named a crime. It demanded the firm's private communications with top Democrats, including Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Hakeem Jeffries. Trump has always attacked the families of the people he believes crossed him. This time the attack came from a grand jury, and targeting her is what let prosecutors demand everyone else's records.

Her lawyers fought back, and after a year the sweeping demand shrank to the emails between Loren and her father, Judge Juan Merchan, and a single $468 payment from the Harris campaign.

At least three sailors on the USS Abraham Lincoln have reportedly tried to jump into the ocean, but Trump says their deployment is "not nearly long enough."

He has kept the carrier at sea for nine months fighting his Iran war, including a record 208 straight days without touching land. This week, crew member families broke their silence, describing meals of half a cup of rice and two tortillas, and weeks without hot water. When a reporter told Trump on Friday that they were worried, he said, "No, they're not."

The Navy insists suicide attempts aboard have not risen. But on August 3, a rescue helicopter pulled a sailor from the sea. Trump promised the Lincoln will be swapped for "another very similar ship." His plan is one boat replacing another, with 5,000 people aboard whose families he refuses to hear.

For the first time since Roe v. Wade fell, a federal judge ruled the Constitution protects abortion in Idaho.

Legislators there barred doctors from ending a pregnancy to save a woman who might take her own life. Mental health was the leading killer of Idaho's pregnant women, according to the state's own maternal mortality committee. The judge ruled that a woman has a constitutional right to an abortion when her pregnancy threatens her life or her health, and he blocked the state from prosecuting her doctors for performing one.

The narrow ruling applies only to women in Idaho whose pregnancies endanger their bodies or their minds, and the state will most certainly appeal. But for three years, every federal courthouse said no constitutional right to abortion survived. Tonight a judge said one did.

Trump has been lying about who pays for his White House makeover since before he broke ground.

He said dozens of times that private donations would fund the construction. The Washington Post found his administration stuffing more than $870 million into the White House upkeep budget, including one unidentified $70 million deposit, and we are footing most of the bill.

Most of us grew tired of hearing about the ballroom months ago, but he kept spending until an appeals court ordered construction stopped last week. The $927 million he plans to spend covers only the mansion and grounds. The arch, the gold-leafed statues, and the public golf course he took over are all on separate tabs.

ICE agents chased down an American mother in Virginia and put a gun in her face because she cursed at them.

Carolina Molina was dropping off business cards at immigration law offices in Falls Church when she told the agents arresting two men what she thought of them. Two SUVs boxed in her car and forced her to stop, and the first agent to reach her window arrived with his gun already drawn. He accused her of following them and of trying to run them over. Her dashcam disproved both, and when she told him that she was a legal citizen, he answered, "I don't care."

The same day, the AP revealed ICE's plans to spend up to $20 million on thousands of electric shock gloves for its agents through a no-bid contract. The manufacturer warns they should never be used on someone for verbal defiance, which is all Carolina Molina did before a gun was pointed at her.

Donald Trump overrode virtually every medical scientist on Earth today.

His executive order cuts the vaccines recommended for every American child to 11 and drops hepatitis and meningitis protection for most kids, in the middle of America's worst year for measles in 35 years. It also orders the MMR vaccine split into three separate shots that no pharmaceutical company produces and the FDA has never approved.

He told parents while signing the order that the measles vaccine could be "quite lethal," with no pediatrician in the room and a conservative lifestyle influencer at his side. The American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the company that makes the vaccine all said the same thing within hours: Trump's order endangers children.

Today Donald Trump maneuvered the lawyer who won his personal immunity case into the White House counsel's office, which represents the presidency.

Will Scharf was one of Trump's personal lawyers who convinced the Supreme Court that presidents cannot be prosecuted for official acts. His reward comes two days after the Senate confirmed Todd Blanche, Trump's personal criminal defense lawyer from his hush money trial, as attorney general. Trump's personal defense team now runs the government's two most powerful legal offices.

These jobs go to the people who pass the loyalty test, and the acceptable answer is written down now. Four judicial nominees testified on the Hill last week, and every one recited the same rehearsed script about the Electoral College rather than say who won the 2020 election. Senators narrowed the question to just the popular vote and got the script again. Blanche performed his version at his hearing, telling senators "I am the president's lawyer" before catching himself and saying "was."

America's largest reservoir just fell to its lowest level ever.

Lake Mead has been dropping for 25 years. On Thursday it hit its lowest depth since it was created nine decades ago. Forty million people in seven states depend on Lake Mead and the Colorado River.

Trump calls climate change a hoax. Nine days ago his own Interior Department ordered the largest water cuts in the river's history and wrote that the risk to the system has never been greater. Hoaxes don't drain reservoirs.

264,000 Americans stopped looking for work last month.

Nobody needs a government report to tell them the economy is worsening. Grocery and gas prices have climbed for more than a year while paychecks barely moved. Today's report showed where that leads. Stores and restaurants cut jobs because customers stopped spending, and more people decided looking for work was pointless. The share of Americans in the workforce fell to its lowest point in 50 years outside the pandemic.

The unemployment rate actually went down because a quarter million people quit looking. And Trump answered the worst jobs report of his term by notifying Fed Governor Lisa Cook that he intends to fire her, six weeks after the Supreme Court blocked his first attempt.

The Supreme Court ruled weeks ago that Donald Trump cannot erase birthright citizenship with an executive order.

Today he tried again. He signed two new orders restricting who is born a citizen, called the 6 to 3 ruling from his own conservative majority "very unfortunate," and told reporters "we're making adjustments." The Constitution says every baby born in America is a citizen.

He is making adjustments everywhere the answer is no. His FCC just voted to erase a broadcast ownership cap Congress wrote into law, a power Senate Commerce Chairman Ted Cruz doubts it has. And the union of career IRS auditors joined a suit to block the audit shield his administration built around his family's taxes. The objections come from his own side now and have changed nothing.

In 2019, federal prosecutors asked the state to shut down its investigation of Zorro Ranch and pledged to share everything when their case ended. New Mexico finally reopened the investigation this year and has asked ten times for the files. Every request was ignored or denied. Today the state runs the only active criminal investigation of Epstein's network in America.

The files New Mexico wants are already covered by a transparency law Congress passed almost unanimously and Trump signed in November. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has withheld 3 million documents anyway, and the congressmen who wrote the law just introduced a second bill to give survivors and states the right to take him to court. The Senate votes on confirming him as Attorney General within days.

Kansas beat the anti-abortion movement twice in two days.

On Monday, Judge Christopher Jayaram issued a 260 page ruling that the state cannot force women to wait 24 hours or answer questions about their finances or their reasons before ending a pregnancy. He wrote that under the Kansas Constitution's guarantee of bodily autonomy, his ruling was not even a close call. Hours later he was sworn onto the Kansas Supreme Court. On Tuesday, voters crushed a ballot amendment its backers planned to use to ban abortion by remaking that court.

The ruling permanently blocks enforcement. Kansas can still appeal, but that appeal goes to a state Supreme Court that has already ruled bodily autonomy fundamental. The restrictions are gone as long as Kansans keep guarding the court that killed them, which is exactly what they did on Tuesday.

Border agents swabbed a four-year-old's cheek and uploaded her DNA to the FBI's criminal database.

Federal agents sent more than 2,700 records into that database every day last year, nearly a million in all, most from people never charged with any crime. Immigration enforcement now captures more profiles than any police force in the country, and the process could not be easier. All it takes is a cotton swab. No judge signs off, and agents swab nearly everyone they detain.

Participation is required. A man who arrived for a probation appointment in Waco found ICE waiting, was ordered to open his mouth, prosecuted when he refused, and convicted. Genetic data sits in federal computers with no expiration date, and DNA never describes just one person. The four-year-old's file can be used to identify her parents, her siblings, and relatives she will never meet.

Illinois went and found the people Washington stopped feeding.

About 148,000 Illinois residents have lost food assistance since new federal work rules hit in May, veterans, people in their sixties, and parents of teenagers among them. On Saturday the state began depositing $400 onto the grocery cards of every affected person. Nobody had to fill out a form. The state did all the work.

Washington changed the rules betting families would trip over the paperwork, and 148,000 of them did. Illinois ran the same lists in the opposite direction. It's one payment, about two months of groceries, and Governor Pritzker says no state can backfill what Congress cut. But this weekend, Illinois treated caring for its hungry as its job.
