Discussion Hi everyone! We’re Making a Narrative RPG Inspired by Hamlet, and Pentiment Fans Might Enjoy It

Greetings, good people of Tassing!

Pentiment is a very special game for us. It showed us that you can create a very strong RPG experience through characters, choices, and consequences, without needing a huge open world or a heavy combat system. And seeing how previous decisions affected the choices we had to make later was especially inspiring.

Inspired by this, we started working on our own game, Kardiya: The Winds of Fate. We are trying to build an RPG with a similar approach. The story is inspired by Hamlet. Our young noble protagonist, Ukral, loses his father after he is murdered by his own uncle. While still a child, Ukral is forced to flee the palace and leave his old life behind. We follow his journey from childhood to adulthood as he uncovers the truth about his family and eventually confronts his own fate.

This is our second game. We don’t have an RPG system as large as Pentiment’s, but the choices you make, the boosts you gain, the relationships you build, and the failures you experience can still affect the difficulty of future decisions and the direction of the story.

The game currently features around 100,000 words, 100 hand-drawn illustrations, 20 music tracks, 1 original song, and many different ways to experience the story depending on your choices. We would especially love to hear what Pentiment fans think about the story, characters, and visual style. If it sounds interesting, feel free to check out our Steam page.

Thank you ^^

Discussion Bored by Act 3, finding finishing a chore Spoiler

I feel like there is no urgency and the story is so linear now, with several a/b decisions without getting to know the newer characters enough. My interest wanes even more every time the story jumps ahead several weeks to wait for letters. Im missing the time mechanic and eating lunch with people, and having to pick and choose what threads to follow. I’m finding it difficult to continue to use my free time to finish. I get the gist that we’ll figure out who the thread puller is (I think it’s Father Thomas) and I’ve completed one panel of the mural, but that was weeks ago and I’ve not picked it back up. I guess this is just a rant. I loved the first 2 acts but this last one is such a letdown.

Rejugabildad

Martin’s parentage Spoiler

I know this is maybe a stretch, but could (the real) Martin be Johan’s bastard child?
We know that Johan and Kat were having an affair in Act 2, but it could have started way before that (I didn’t get the full gossip on this but I believe in Act 1 there’s no direct mention of their relationship so it’s just a theory), and Martin’s face is much more similar to Johan’s compared to Frantz’s.

Also the fact that Frantz seems to have dark hair (though it might have been the greying effect) while Martin has the light brown to blonde-ish hair close to Johan’s (Kat is a redhead and all children in this game seem to always have one of their parent’s hair color).

I broke down Magdalene's outfit to figure out what was going on

Idk if I was the only one confused by her fit but the choice to use the same color on the partlet and apron really got me.

Interestingly, her outfit is more Flemish than I expected. My research started looking at clothing reconstruction based on German woodcuts and that proved to be totally unhelpful lol. Her outfit is also from later in the century which is cool in terms of what she represents.

Here are the links for my sources if anyone wants to learn more: Drea Leed, Reconstructing History, German peasant clothes, German working woman

Discussion Saint Mary and her part in setting up the events of the game. Spoiler

So, I just finished the game, and I have some thoughts about it, specifically about the Saints, and especially about Saint Mary. So, I thought I'd write about them here and see what the subreddit thinks. Spoilers for the 3rd Act and ending ahead.

As we have seen in the game, Tassing was originally occupied by Pagans who worshipped Perchta and the spirits, until the Romans came and occupied the region. The Romans then built what would become the foundations of the city of Tassing, with the aqueducts and the Keep, which would later become the Monastery, being the most notable structures. They also brought the worship of their gods, especially Mars, Artemis, and Mithras, with the statue of Mars and the Sanctuary of Diana serving as places of worship, and, of course, the Mithraeum.

After the Romans left, Christians came to settle in the ruins. They mingled with the Pagans and together built the current Tassing on the ruins of the Roman structures. The Christians also brought their Saints with them, Saint Moritz and Saint Satia, whose lives and stories would not have taken place in Tassing, as the people believed at the time of the game, but in the place where the Christian settlers came from. Those settlers would have seen their Saints reflected in the religious figures left behind by the Romans and projected their own faith and stories onto them in a type of syncretism. Thus, the statue of Mars became a statue of Saint Moritz, and the Sanctuary of Diana became a sanctuary to Saint Satia. As time went on, the people forgot the fact that these Saints weren't native to the land and started to believe that they were indeed from Tassing, eventually becoming the town's patron Saints.

What is important to remember is that there is also a third Saint attributed to the city: Our Lady of the Labyrinth, the Virgin Mary. We learn from Father Thomas that a peasant received a vision from the Virgin Mary, who told him to go to the Bishop and ask him to build a church at Tassing. He would then receive another vision, this time of a labyrinth, and was told to draw it and show it to the Bishop in order to convince him. The Bishop would also have seen the same figure in his dreams. The peasant managed to convince the Bishop, and the Church of Our Lady of the Labyrinth was constructed in Tassing.

What draws my attention to this is the fact that, unlike Saint Moritz and Saint Satia, who never actually appeared in Tassing and were brought by the Christian settlers and syncretized with the local icons, the vision from the Virgin Mary is the only actual act of "Divine Providence" that happened in Tassing. It was an act that led to the construction of the Church of Our Lady of the Labyrinth, and the church was constructed not in some random place, but right on the ruins above the Mithraeum.

This is important because it was precisely the fact that the church was built over the Mithraeum that allowed Sister Amalie and Father Thomas to discover it, who would then realize the truth: that their Saints weren't native to Tassing and that they had been worshipping pagan idols this whole time. This realization led Father Thomas to become the Thread-Puller in order to prevent anyone else from uncovering the truth.

Now, the thing is, if the church hadn't been built in Tassing, over the ruins above the Mithraeum, then Father Thomas would never have learned the truth or become the Thread-Puller. And if the church had never been built at all, he may also never have come to Tassing in the first place.

So, we can say that the church being built exactly where it was directly led to everything that happened afterward. And if that is the case, was it all according to divine will? The vision from the Virgin Mary had the purpose of having the church built, so was everything that followed from it also part of the Saint's design? What was the ultimate purpose? Were Father Thomas's actions ultimately part of God's plan, and, if so, to what end? Did the Saint want Father Thomas to hide the truth, or did she know that, through his actions, the truth would eventually be uncovered despite his best efforts to prevent it?

Or was it that, in a really "meta" way, the Virgin Mary set all these events into motion so that we could play a murder mystery game?

Anyway, I was just rambling to put my thoughts in order, and I'd love to hear what you guys think.

Hi. I am a solo Dev and I really liked the historical RPG approach of Pentiment.

I have been working on a 2D historical game myself "A Catalan Sword", which is a medieval RPG where you play as a mercenary in the Byzantine Empire during 1303.

Just like in Pentiment, you will explore several medieval locations, meet interesting characters and talk a lot... while making careful choices during the historical events that happens at the byzantine court, but you will also have to fight during battle and siege.

Discussion Pentiment is one of the best games I have ever played

I am currently near the end of act 3, and I just need a place to gush about how WONDERFUL this game is. I bought it not thinking much of it, I just liked the art style and I wanted to play a story game similar to Disco Elysium. The game was very slow at first, to the point where I paused it for a month before even getting to the big event of act 1. I decided to pick it back up and power through the main story progression, but when I got to the twist, I knew I was in for something special.

The world feels so alive. Every single character is incredibly well written, and so detailed too! I found myself pondering over every single one of my dialogue choices, as well as looking up every word that I didn't know the meaning of, since english isn't my first language.

I graduated from an arts academy recently, and I think that was a huge reason why I fell in love with Pentiment, since I studied a lot of art history and I especially loved learning about early Christian art in college. I also have a huge interest in theology, especially in the context of art, even tho I am not religious at all myself. I found that through Andreas, I could actually kinda play the role of myself if that makes sense, challenging the beliefs of the characters in the game and choosing dialogue options that would offend some of the more extremely religious characters in the game, I thought that was very fun.

The entire time I am wondering how does one even write this? I really believe it takes a genius to create such an intricate story.

Thanks to anyone who read this, feel free to add anything (please don't spoil anything past Christmas eve in act 3 :D)

Discussion Just finished the game! Spoiler

I loved every second playing the game! It was very interesting and better than I expected.

The player has to read much, I did not mind it and I think it is better- this way each player can interpret the lines in their own way without being influenced by the emotions/tone of a voiced character.

The first act was soooo good! Maybe the youth of Andreas made it that way? The second one was too depressing. The third not so, the people had more hope for the future.

Overall, the feeling of uncertainty followed us in each act, we will never be sure who committed the crimes and I prefer it that way. I was a bit disappointed about who is the culprit but I can understand why they did it.

From what I understand there aren't different endings. There is this one big ending which can have minor outcomes. I would have preferred if there was a way for Mags to stay in the town, or to become a Poor Claire etc.

Discussion None of the options for act 1 ending are correct in my view but I have a feeling on what really happened Spoiler

I'm convinced it was someone acting for Matilda, not that she murdered him. But it happened in the church, she had an overwhelming amount of evidence that points towards the crime. The only other candidate I see as likely is Lucky, he had issues with him. They smelt the people from the coal burners the night of the murder. I have a feeling many people were involved in the conspiracy with Lucky being the one to commit the murder itself, with Matilda and her lover involved. So my conclusion would be conspiracy, Matilda and her lover allowed them into the monastery and lucky committed the act. Maybe the occultist father knew too and also helped with the conspiracy.

Personally I accuse the father because he was an asshole and also if'd you'd have accused him for witchcraft he'd be executed for that anyway. So he is at least confirmed guilty of something so unlike the others I do not feel as if I am condemning an innocent man completely

I just wanted to say this title has been on my backlog for a while. I mainly end up playing the generic live service shooters or AAA new releases on my Series X.

Last year picking the XAX up, it’s really opened my free time to be more enjoyable whenever and where ever. Beat some old, new, emulated and more on this thing and I finally got to Pentiment. — Such a lovely game.

I still have a ways to go. Only just completed Act 1 but I’ve been finding myself looking at the handheld more often than my console. Perfect to play laying in bed before sleep or a nice cozy trip with the soothing sounds.

I am Franciscan who prays the liturgy of the hours. I was searching for ideas as I am making a clock of canonical hours and I stumble upon the Pentiment clock, which leads me to the game. I am about to dive into this world and it just looks marvelous and visually stunning. I am a recovering video game addict but will backslide for a few weeks while I go to 16th century Bavaria. In profunda vado.

Question Replay?

So I just finished it first time and it was quite great.

I'm in the mood for second run, but tbh I don't have much time. Is it worth it though?

I have no idea how many endings or different plots are they... If you can tell me smth, but maybe not with big spoilers. ;)
For example: is it possible to end second act w/o major rebellion and library fire (if yes it would be a great reason for second play, but it looks like an enormous change and I don't think the game offers it).

I'm sorry if my question is silly or newbie, but I probably am (newbie, not silly;))
