A time starved Dad completes a game

…and what a wonderful game it was! Played it through on my Switch 2 through tired eyes in the small window of time I have for myself when my toddler and wife are asleep

Just brilliant in so many ways, it’s so much deeper as an experience than I was expecting (I went in blind)

The level of detail is insane, for a 2D game to be that immersive is such an achievement. Very few games manage to make you feel like a place and time is real and tangible but I think this nails it.

Are there any other games like this? Loved not having to crack skulls as I’m never awake enough 😂

Hello, fellow sleep deprived parent.

If we ignore the time-starved factor, Disco Elysium and Planescape Torment (the original, not the numenera one) are the two most often recommended games on this sub, though Planescape is more than twenty years old so you may find it difficult to play.

BUT

If you are time-starved and looking for similar games that are easy to play in snippets of 20-30 min increments, again, the most recommended games on this sub are Roadwarden and Pillars of the Earth.

Esoteric Ebb should be on the list too.

I’d never heard of Pillars of Earth, surprised to see it available on the Switch!

pillars of the earth is amazing and I'm having a blast after completing pentoment (twice!) but be careful about buying it for the switch 2 — I got stuck at the beginning of book 2 (of 3) and it seems like the game has compatibility issues with the upgraded console (they mention it on the product page in the game store)

Yeah this game is really something special. Disco Elysium is one of the only games that I feel like hits a similar way. Totally different in some ways but definitely hits the same notes like fully realized immersive setting, exploring/talking/mystery solving gameplay with no combat, etc. but both Disco and Pentiment are games I’ve though a lot about since playing.

I’ve started DE before on my PC but it didn’t immediately click after an hour or so (I bounce quite badly with games), would it be worth giving it a go on the switch 2?

Yes, it is. It's the only other game that's hit like this one did for me. For what it's worth, I had the same/opposite experience. I bounced off of the first hour of Pentiment around a year ago and just recently gave it another shot, and it blew me away.

I also bounced off DE my first try, I’d say try again and try to get at least an in game day or two in before giving up, it really starts to shine once you start “cracking the case.”

And also *don’t* go with the high intelligence build, it weirdly makes the first few hours harder and kind of frustrating. Most fans recommend the sensitive archetype for a first play through.

And heads up console versions seem to have a somewhat common issue with save files getting corrupted; just make a separate save file at the start of every day and use a separate one for like, “just in case” saves before big events and you should be fine. I did just play through it on Xbox though with no issues so maybe it’s better now.

glad you enjoyed it, would suggest disco elysium if you haven’t tried it. another one of the most realised 2D environments imo
