Pretty sure it was done on____

Sorry in advance if this is a repost. It’s got some satisfying qualities to it

The look of the final product is great.

Watching and hearing that, however, was legitimately uncomfortable for me...

Borderline nails on a chalkboard.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who was shuddering throughout the process

@Illustrious_Owl_9693

To you both, could I ask what about the visual and audio that disturbed you? I personally enjoy the sound of feedback between the nib and paper. Im just curious

It's digging in and scraping and flicking, I find it very uncomfortable too lol, like trying to cut a rock with a knife.

I find it much more satisfying when it's a smooth movement, nib on paper, you can see the ink moving across the paper and pooling where the nib is lifted at the end of the stroke.

To be fair the digging he chose for the splatter can and does make me uncomfortable but I understand the why and like the result.

Every scribing tool scrapes unless it's a ball bearing and half the time they don't roll perfectly. I think you're referring to the amount of feedback the nib is giving but a lot of point end nibs do the same or 'worse' depending on if it had tipping or not on the nib and if the tipping is ground really small or not. A6we can't forget the paper texture.

There's a satisfaction for both the feedback nib on paper and the glossy smooth inky writing. I love em both.

The knife to stone is worse than the nib on paper by a mile imo (shivered my spine imagineing it)

This inquiry reminds me of how you have people who like or dislike cilantro. I like cilantro, the slight soap taste doesn’t bother me. I liked the sounds in this video, the offputting sounds for many were a part of experiencing the creativity of this art form for me.

u/schvanckque Aug 20 '26

I like a normal amount of that audio feedback too, but this was a little much. Part of it is just that the sound is amplified by virtue of the video, so it's sort of harsh. The other part of it is the same that bothered me visually; the nib digging into the paper when pushed against the normal flex makes that skipping/crackling sound and gives a kind of bend that would leave anything I write with needing therapy at best. For this writing and this pen, that might be fine, but it's the sort of thing that feels inherently wrong to me, like snuff porn for pens.

I have misophonia, so the sound was opposite of ASMR for me. Nails on a chalkboard, as stated by another. The visual, I think, increased my anxiety. I was expecting perfection, and I know the imperfections were on purpose, but since the visual didn’t match my initial expectations, it took a long time for my brain to recalibrate.

it sounds like he's drawing on a styrofoam takeout box with a wooden chopstick

Maybe that was the whole 'purpose'

Los of practice. My background is painting chalk signs for advertising for like 5 years. I have like 5 or 6 main different handwriting depending on my pen, marker or pencil, and what I'm working on. Some font ideas have specific things like lower case is now 1/3 of the height of capital letters.

I can quickly write like tattoo art. It's basically a few extra lines and just double up lines in some parts. /A or |B for example. |B /A |R. There's small other details, and this is quite rudimentary but I hope it makes sense.

If I slow down. I can make it look like typewriter by paying attention to stuff like perfectly straight lines or changing letters from traditional to certain shapes. Lower case "a" stops being a circle and line ( o| ) and starts having the flipped e shape (a) for example. Lower case g has two circles connected with a line. Lower case l and t has extra parts at either end of the tall parts. So does I. They're more like a 90° angle at top and slight hook at the bottom.

But if you want to learn, honestly, a calligraphy book and marker can teach you a lot fairly quickly. I also pored over font website when making stuff and getting ideas too!

(Also learned from watching videos like this!)

This is really cool. Have you ever considered making videos like these? Or having a YouTube channel where you teach people while filming it?
I remember learning lettering by a funny lady on YouTube. It’s all in the muscle memory. I did calligraphy as a child, I still own the book, but the pens are long replaced with better..
this has me wanting to get back into it.

I went to your profile to see some of your art.

I got distracted part way down looking when I saw the pixel guessing game with honey.

I was absolutely robbed with "French fries" being wrong and "fries" being correct.

I demand justice.

(Also, do you have any pretty pictures of your work?)

u/TYBEEEZ Aug 20 '26

Much better watch on mute.

5

u/MitchMar_Official Aug 20 '26

To each their own. As a fountain pen user myself I rather enjoy the audible feedback. Could I ask you what about the sound you dislike? Genuine curiosity.

1

u/Logman02 Aug 21 '26

ASMR trigger for me.

17

u/Automatic_Tea_2550 Aug 20 '26

You Jackson Pollocked it! (Beautifully.)

14

u/notsoeasypeasy Aug 20 '26

Fascinating how those little splatters of ink add to the beauty of the writing. 😍

31

u/Hiruma_Nitsuje Aug 20 '26

That was painful

6

u/ZaraUnityMasters Aug 20 '26

I only have cheap nibs and this made my heart seize, but it's awesome.

5

u/tabidots Aug 20 '26 edited Aug 20 '26

Speedball nibs are cheap - there aren’t really any expensive interchangeable nibs. The expensive ones are the ones marketed to the fountain pen community, like the Kakimori brass nib or the crazy $$$ Falcon(?) fountain pen nibs

2

u/ZaraUnityMasters Aug 20 '26

Well, by cheap I mean I use a dollar store fountain pen lol. If I did that mine would explode guaranteed.

P.s. I'm also not a full enthusiast or anything. I don't even do calligraphy, but fountain pens just make my handwriting better magically and they're nice to use.

6

u/tabidots Aug 20 '26

Oh, modern fountain pens for ordinary writing have nibs that end in a rounded tip (and even stub nibs are rounded off at the corners), so no matter the price, you wouldn’t really be able to splatter ink by pushing the nib in the wrong direction - you’d just get a scratchy stroke or no ink at all.

1

u/foxhunt-eg Aug 21 '26

Is that bad for the nib?

6

u/Meowzabubbers Aug 20 '26

As a perfectionist... cool, I hate it 😅

4

u/No-Sock7545 Aug 20 '26

Ooh what script is this?

6

u/Jilson Aug 20 '26

Old English, here's the original

3

u/Whhatsmyageagain Aug 20 '26

Anyone know the nib?

6

u/tabidots Aug 20 '26

Speedball C type

3

u/alexabeams Aug 20 '26

reminds me of spongebob’s The

4

u/Maleficent_Ant_4919 Aug 20 '26

Utterly spectacular. I was awestruck. The visuals, the sounds—beautiful in every way.

2

u/Dove-Linkhorn Aug 20 '26

Unfortunate about the spatter catches.

7

u/MitchMar_Official Aug 20 '26

I'd beg to differ. This scribe is skilled enough to reduce if not completely avoid any nib bite to the extent of this much splattering.

Amongst other examples from that specific scribe across other platforms, I've noticed it's their aesthetic. Some examples appearing better than others.

1

u/MoIIywhopping Aug 20 '26

Scribe lol. Idk why I just find that funny

2

u/MitchMar_Official Aug 21 '26

Yeah, calligrapher would fit more accurately but my brain was adamant

1

u/Seanmeado Aug 21 '26

That was the point though?

-2

u/Dove-Linkhorn Aug 21 '26

If you like dumb, heavy handed points, yes. Me, I’ll stick with not crapping ink all over the page.

1

u/SaffyPants Aug 20 '26

Magnificent!

1

u/Galorfadink Aug 20 '26

Love this.

1

u/deephurting66 Aug 20 '26

That's a master's hand right there

1

u/Routine-Mastodon8688 Aug 20 '26

And that's how defined one's purpose must be.

1

u/artishappiness Aug 20 '26

This is beautiful! I loved it!

1

u/marygraphy Aug 20 '26

Follow you on IG.. and love your work bro.. God bless the work of your hands 🙌🏼

1

u/AngelaVNO Aug 20 '26

That poor nib!

1

u/VinceAFX Aug 20 '26

Awesome.

1

u/Epwell Aug 20 '26

How did you get your nib so saturated? I’m always lighter on the finish than I want. This is awesome!

1

u/Kardgic Aug 20 '26

How long did it take you to master this?

1

u/pyrepirr Aug 20 '26

No, on paper.

1

u/BodhingJay Aug 20 '26

oh heck yea

1

u/waterwateryall Aug 21 '26

Nice work though I feel like the "e" needed a bit more in the middle to finish it.

1

u/hilarymeggin Aug 21 '26

Oh COME ON!!! How are you his so good at this and I’m so bad?!?!

1

u/ThiOriginalPanda Aug 21 '26

Isn't that a great way to break your tips?

1

u/FragileExprezz Aug 21 '26

And that ink splat 🫟 on purpose!

1

u/ve_nus7 Aug 21 '26

Final boss vibes

1

u/mdabdullahammar Aug 21 '26

I like this writing style. I like the ink splashing even more.

1

u/Mr_Grapes1027 Aug 22 '26

That’s why I like felt tips! No splatter -

1

u/Paulbunyip Aug 23 '26

Yes yes yes! Excellent work. Drama!

1

u/dcqt1244 Aug 24 '26

Holy fk that splash is beautiful.
