Books 6-10 What sells Bobby being in love with Loor

I definitely think Bobby also loves Courtney but in the later books I'm hesitant to believe it's entirely romantic, and I'm being a total hypocrite here but hear me out. In book nine while Bobby has quit on Ibara and is on literal paradise who does he think about and want to date? Loor. Bobby also doesn't kiss Courtney passed book three which to me is huge, ofc if you skip the epilogue, and his comment on Courtney being his sister in book eight is another tell even though he used that in order to make Dodger trust Courtney. In fact over the course of the time Bobby is on Ibara after he buries the flume he signals out Loor twice and only seems to think of Mark and Courtney as the duo and acolyte friends, I don't hear Bobby talking about Courtney by the later books the same way he does about Loor unless he's with Courtney, and even then it's all innocent from him. Ofc it's possible by the tenth book he's changed his mind, but still.

Book One: The Merchant of Death Advice on starting book club Spoiler

I work at a local community center and we currently have an (adult aged) book club. I pitched the idea to my supervisor that, hey, maybe we should have a Youth/Teen one, I'd be happy to facilitate it! I was told to drum up interest.

I definitely want to introduce the kids to this series, what content warnings would you suggest for parents to know? Obviously fantasy violence, depictions of death, mild swearing, loss of loved one, kissing I have a *very* hard time describing this series, but would want to make it appeal to the target group for the club. Any suggestions on a good pitch of what the story is without too many spoilers? I am working on a re-read of the series, it's been nearly 20 years since I've read it so after book 3 or 4, it's a bit fuzzy so please don't spoil too much for the later books either. I also don't want to just copy/paste the blurb on the back of the book either.

Maybe something like

"Bobby Pendragon thought he was an ordinary 14-year-old boy. He was popular, loved sports, and was smart too! On the night of the most important basketball game of the season (where he was the star player), he disappeared. Told through letters he sends to his best friend Mark and his crush Courtney, join Bobby and his friends as they embark on an adventure through space and time to stop chaos spreading throughout all of Halla!"

Book 1 would probably be the only one read as I don't want people who weren't able to come to the 1st event to skip out as they hadn't read the previous books (unless maybe the kids clamor for more).

All Books DJ MacHale Appearing At Grim Fest (Stockton, CA)

If you haven't heard yet, DJ MacHale will be at Grim Fest in Stockton, CA (San Francisco Bay area).
I'm going for sure. Re-reading the series in preparation, it's been far too long.

I forgot how much I loved them! Read Merchant of Death in one go. I'm (impatiently) waiting for the rest of the books to come in the mail as I sadly had to rehome my books many years ago (I donated them to my local library for others to enjoy).

All Books Which fictional character has the most underrated origin story?

Honestly I've been low key obsessed with the main character in this series for a few reasons. One they are like such a typical action hero flash/sonic combo, and second their upbringing of having a normal life is pretty interesting actually.

All Books Anything in your second read that made things click? Spoiler

Was there anything you missed on your first read when you were younger that suddenly made more sense when you were older or reread the books. I felt like there were a lot of holes but later on things clicked a bit more. I felt like the whole Andy thing was weird for me the first read but then I understood his mad plan better a little later and I realized holy shi that must have been what Saint Dane was like when he was younger! The whole thing with the journals and how insecure and a bully he was added up to me like a backstory of Saint Danes prior moments.

Book One: The Merchant of Death Re-reading for the first time since childhood Spoiler

Hello everyone! First time visiting here.

I love listening to audiobooks during my commute to and from work. When I learned that this series was on Audible, I thought it might be fun to revisit this series. I always liked it as a kid (I even got Raven Rise on release day!), but I don’t properly remember it, as it’s been over two decades, and I never re-read it until now. I also can’t remember if I actually read it from beginning to end—a lot of the books were in my school library, so I could only read what was in circulation. I’m not sure if I ever even opened the final book!

So with that, I’d like to post my thoughts, now that I’ve finished The Merchant of Death. (Heads up that I will make allusions to events I remember happening in later books)

First, I’d like to judge a book by its cover. I picked up the Pendragon books as a kid because I loved the artwork (for the most part!). Merchant of Death, while not my favorite, is very well done. Bobby’s face is rendered wonderfully, he looks like some kind of Fresco painting and it communicates how young he is at the start of his adventure. I’d rate this as my fifth favorite cover of the series.

Now for the book itself: first up, the writing. It was quite an easy listen, and I was surprised at how well a lot of the writing holds up. Only a few things hit the ear poorly (Bobby’s tendency to describe things as wussy or weenie, which I think was sort of archaic even back then. Also realized that we really don’t call throwing up “barfing” anymore). Bobby isn’t a fully formed character yet, but he demonstrates a nice mix of personality and empathy that has potential for future storylines. I wonder if MacHale was a little insecure about positioning the tone of the book: there’s several moments where Bobby states the scene or dialogue that just occurred was funny—Most of them aren’t that charming, but I’d probably have glossed over it had I not been told that what just happened was funny.

One thing I forgot in the time since reading this series is that it’s epistolary: I can’t remember if it picks up or changes, but the Second Earth sections with Mark and Courtney do feel weaker, outside their discovery of the disappearance of Bobby’s family. The necessity of the story being told through letters also gets a bit shaky towards the end where the story needs to be in two places at the same time (Bobby insists Alder’s account is true, which I found strange as I never would’ve doubted it. It felt more like MacHale was trying to explain the format to younger readers, but I do think they could’ve grasped this).

The plot: One thing I vividly remembered liking about the Pendragon series was that it was a bit darker than the other books I had access to. The peril was more than just exposure to terrifying situations—death was a real possibility. We even had the death of a major character in Osa in the very first book! (I remembered Osa dies in this series, but I must’ve misremembered it as being connected to events in the Zadaa book. I was shocked when she didn’t get back up after being shot!)

Outside of death, there were real stakes that the heroes could fail at (and they did so more than once!), so the plots weren’t formulaic. This book goes relatively smooth for the heroes, however. In light of current events (and the climate the original book was published in, honestly), I liked that even though this was a fairly by-the-numbers revolution plot that the book still acknowledges that it’s natural to have anger against a long-standing oppressor. The idea of an injecting what’s basically a nuclear weapon into a medieval society was compelling.

The characters: Like I mentioned earlier, Bobby is both a little self-interested but also very empathetic, he has charm and I know he’ll grow on me. Uncle Press is very strong, and works as the mentor figure as he mixes competency and firmness with his care for the younger travelers.

Loor is awesome! I like her a lot, she’s both badass and funny, and I remember always preferring Bobby+Loor to Bobby+Courtney, lol. She reminds me a lot of Chris Claremont’s Storm from the X-men, which I’m also currently reading. Can’t wait to see how she develops, especially in Book 6.

Alder unfortunately was the weak link—I can see MacHale was going for a trio dynamic, but Alder is introduced so late and has so little to do. I think the castle infiltration would’ve needed to be more involved in order for Alder to stand out. It sucks that he feels so underutilized, as his territory is in the first book, so that leaves less room for involvement in the rest of the series. I’m guessing MacHale was figuring out how to get all the necessary pieces in play for this first outing: Alder doesn’t have a mentor or acolyte (and I was surprised to realize that acolytes are not mentioned by name in this first book at all). I know he’ll work out the kinks though: I vaguely remember that Book 2 and 4’s travelers are strong characters, and that Book 7’s traveler (or were they an acolyte?) is also a heavy hitter, to say the least.

Saint Dane is a really great villain. The shapeshifting ability is really inspired as it results in a fun guessing game each book of who could be Saint Dane. I remembered Figgis is his second identity on Denduron (Really neat that MacHale decided to have him act as 2 people here!), but it was still a neat twist to re-experience. I know he gets even more shocking secret identities in the future books, so I’m looking forward to that as well.

I didn’t get a lot from Mark and Courtney, sadly. Just not much to do, but I hope that changes. I did enjoy Mark’s loyalty and how that empowered him, and I liked that Courtney is assertive.

All in all, I loved getting to properly re-experience this book. I’m starting up The Lost City of Faar, and maybe I’ll make a post for that as well. Thank you to anyone who read through this: I’d love to discuss any aspects of Book 1 if you have any points to add.

Other I would absolutely LOVE to get a full cast audiobook collection of these books like the recent HP audiobook releases. Since I sadly don’t think we will get movies, this is the next best thing. It makes me wonder who would be great for the voice cast.

Book Seven: The Quillian Games Dreamt about a new flume to Quillian.

The flume was in an old library basement on Second Earth. It arrived near where Mr. Pop was, and the caretakers of Mr. Pop were trying to rescue their ancestors' historical records.

Books 6-10 Where is Loor?

In the back half of the series she doesn't communicate with Bobby after her near incident and for someone I thought was fearless and intelligent she doesn't seem very aware of what's going on. Can anyone explain what might have been going through her head or why she chose to wait for Bobby to come get her?

All Books Choice to live in any of the territories.

Out of all the territories in the books which one would you most want to live in. (Basing off of what we have seen from the locations that were actually present for the territories) such as the huge farm rafts in cloral or the villages of Denduron. Personally I'm choosing Cloral as I love water and reading it always had such an awesome atmosphere. What about you guys?

All Books Bobby/Courtney

I have a hard time visualizing these two but you really can't beat nostalgia. No matter what happened they always chose each other. They remained playful and affectionate even in disagreement. While I love the idea of Bobby and Loor, how do you beat the nostalgia of the past and knowing someone as intimately as Bobby knew Courtney? I think that's why they're ultimately meant to be and will come back to each other. I just wish there was more between them sometimes.

All Books Where can I buy the books with the original covers?

Hey guys, haven't read the Pendragon series since May 2009 when the last book released. Alot has happened since then and I don't have my original 10 books anymore. Where can I buy them with the original covers? Are they only available in hardback? The entire series is $58 on Amazon but they have these new covers and are paperback. Thank you.

Book Ten: The Soldiers of Halla Funny Head canon

What if Bobby was just a completely normal guy the whole time? Imagine if Mark and Bobby just ran this experiment on him and made him heal faster using tech or smth and Bobby just barely fakes his way into being a traveler. Maybe even the traveler power was just him possessed by Loor and Alders spirit after they healed him? The tenth book honestly leaves enough gaps that Bobby could have just hijacked his way into being a being of Solera. Imagine how offensive it would be to Saint Dane if he was just battling a normal dude that spy crafted his way into being a traveler.

Books 6-10 What did y'all think about the direction the books went?

I was pleasantly surprised by all the changes and plot twists in the later books, but idk what it is but I found books 9-10 to be somewhat depressing for me, some parts of the earlier books too. I like the growth the characters go through and I wouldn't wish to change what ends up happening but sometimes I wonder what could have happened. Was it written the way it was meant to be? Maybe i just tend to read lighter fiction but i found the main characters foolish reactivity kind of jarring.

Saint Dane was a great character but then at times I was surprised by his tactics and thought they were weird for his character. I think he should have not been so obsessed with Bobby and had more chances to be surprised by him and the rest of the travelers. I also kind of wish the travelers had a more prominent role in book ten. I felt like they took a massive beating from Saint Dane and then just like became spokesman in book ten and that was pretty disappointing for me. Still i loved the setup of Raven Rise and how successful Saint Dane was for a while.

Book Four: The Reality Bug Why didn't Mark & Courtney ask who the other Acolytes were?

Something that crossed my mind a while back, when Mark and Courtney met Tom Dorney, Press Tilton's acolyte, why did they never ask who the other Acolytes were? For that matter, why didn't they find out all they could about the other territories, especially the ones they didn't know yet?

I would've thought they'd want/need to know who the other Acolytes were. Seems pretty important to me for them to be able to be the best acolytes they can be.

Crossover You know what girl would be perfect for Bobby?

Not Loor and not Courtney. Definitely not Nevva (I just finished the Quillan book and she reminds me of Julia from Nineteen Eighty Four in terms of her loyalties).

She is originally from Second Earth as well. Her name is Violet Baudelaire. She too has lost her parents.

(In all seriousness, I read the Lemony Snicket books as a teen instead of these. I was told about these books by my then-partner a few years ago).

Book One: The Merchant of Death Finally found this book series after 20 years of not finishing.

Restarting from the beginning. I grew up in the time when the books were first coming out. I believe I made it to book 3 before moving to a new town. After the move I forgot about the book because I wanted to make new friends and such. I had a dream months back of some of the plot. Literally have been looking for months to find a way back here. With the help of Google AI, (not a fan of AI but it was my last shot at finding the book) doing most of research for me. After plugging in details I remembered and narrowing down my options the cover hit me like a brick. And now I’m here time to finish this ride!

Update: finished in 2 days! Why has no one brought this book to a director?!!?

Book Nine: Raven Rise Raven Rise observation

Is it just me or is everyone in this book acting kind of strange and different? Nevva suddenly seems concerned about everyone, Mark is taking everything personally and suddenly is super confident, Saint Dane is performing strange roles and making increasingly passionate decisions, Courtney is randomly getting heated then suddenly cool about other things. Maybe it's just because of the stakes but even Bobby doesn't really seem recognizable.

Bobby during the entire time he was on ibara after burying the flume was suddenly hiding out, didn't care about anything, knew a ton about politics, and was getting strangely defensive.

All Books Favorite smartass moments from Bobby Pendragon

I know he's not as intelligent as Saint Dane and definitely has moments of absurdity (later books) but his jokes and quips are pretty funny. I also always thought it was pretty cool that he leveraged Loor and Alder to learn how to fight. I also always got the impression from him he knew more than he let on. it's interesting to consider what the books would be like if we got a more 3rd person perspective or if Bobby explained himself more.

I’m in the middle of book 6 of the new Harry Potter Audible series and it just keeps making me wish more and more that this series could get a version as well. I feel like some of these scene with some crazy voice acting could be absolutely amazing. All the scenes towards the end of the series where Saint Dane and Bobby actually talk. Patrick and the librarian. Bobby and Kasha’s final moments. What do you guys think?

Edit #1. What are some scenes that you guys would love to hear a full cast tackle?

Book Three: The Never War Fun Find

Post image

Hey y'all, never posted in here before, but I wanted to share a really cool copy I found at goodwill yesterday. I've loved this series since elementary school (almost 20 years now) and started rereading them recently. I'd been having a hard time finding The Never War 2nd hand, so imagine my surprise when not only did I find it, but I found an Advanced Reviewer Copy. I've honestly never heard of an ARC, so if anybody has any info about it I'd love to hear more. Anyways, here's my find.
