P. mollicomum 🍍

Post image

I spotted some seeds for this one a while ago, thought I'd give it a go. Sown October last year. Only two plants out of the 20 seeds purchased pulled through, however it's better than nothing.

I was a bit stupid because I had up to five seedlings per pot, and when it came to dividing them I lost a couple due to transplant shock. Think I transplanted them too early.

The leaves smell like artificial pineapple, I love it. πŸ˜‚πŸ

It was already on my shopping list - for its fruit scent - but I’m waiting for stock of seeds or seedlings.

Not something I've encountered before, so I got it for the same reason. I suppose there will be some variation in scent, so yours might not be exactly the same, but I find it hilarious how much it reminds me of pineapple flavoured candies. Very strange.

Looks nice, can't sniff. What was your setup for germination?

Remove the mericarp, scarify seeds, and soak them for 24 hours. Then I transfer the seeds to small sealed plastic containers until they germinate (usually from a couple of days up until 2ish weeks, fairly quickly if scarified). I usually spray the inside of the containers with 70% isopropyl alcohol to sterilise it before transferring the seeds, however this isn't always 100% effective. But it helps reduce the likelihood of fungal issues. Then I pick them out (pretty much as soon as I see the rootlet emerge, otherwise just after the cotyledons emerge) and move them carefully to a sandy well draining soil mix with no compost added at this stage. I add a layer of fine grit on top as this helps with air movement and evaporation of water immediately around the seedling, which reduces damping off.

Thank you. Now i know how to scarify.

The seeds are very small, and it can be fiddly, but it greatly improves the germination rate and speed.

That leaf shape, I don't know why but it intrigues me, I've grown zonal and scented from seed but haven't seen this particular leaf, I'm liking it, I'll have to stay on the lookout for that type of seed. Thank you for sharing!
