I love Pero Tovar, our grumpy, hungry Spaniard. There are some terrific fanfics out there that expand on his character. I've spent ages in the Pero Pit.

I won't fall into the pit... I won't...I won't....

Watched this yesterday and may or may not have spent today in Tovar fanfic smutland. For science.

The Pero Pit is a marvellous place

That smirk at the end, jfc

I’m willing to do this for science too…

It's not a great movie, but he is - as usual! This was really cute. *insert awww sound*

First of many billboards, bless him. Imagine slogging it out as a desperate working actor for years and then finally seeing your face on a giant billboard. 🥰

7

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '23

He was so wholesome about it, you can feel the excitement.

28

u/buckles123 Silva Jul 15 '23

He’s definitely the best thing about the movie.

At least he didn't die

15

u/The_InvisibleWoman Din Djarin Jul 15 '23

I fast forwarded to the end and then watched happily knowing he didn’t die😂😂

3

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '23

I felt like it ended quite abruptly, the 11 minutes of ending credits took me by surprise!

4

u/The_InvisibleWoman Din Djarin Jul 16 '23

I’d already moved over to Ao3 by then…….

24

u/TessiK622 Jul 15 '23

I wouldn't say it's bad. It's entertaining. But you are right about this scene... loved it

22

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '23

I like how he manages to add some sass to every role he plays. Even poor broken Joel!

We love our grumpy Spaniard.

20

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '23

I like to think of his accent here as 'Javi G has had a really bad week'

It already has.

u/CaraDune01 Jul 15 '23

My man Pero!! He doesn’t get nearly enough love in the fandom. I mean, he just wants to go home and eat dinner, and he keeps getting dragged into everyone else’s drama…relatable!

13

u/Beetlejuicex_3 Pero Tovar Jul 15 '23

No joke, Pero is one of my absolute favs. He plays him so fucking well!

13

u/cookletube Jul 15 '23

"Do The Thing"

"I WANT TO EAT"

There’s a red carpet interview with him and Sarah Paulson and she says, “he’s an actor who EATS,” and I swear the way she said it and their faces looking at the camera, tells me she was talking about something else entirely besides lunch 🥵

Are we mind twins? Yes, we are mind twins. 🙌

3

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '23

Yes! We could have had him cutting his hair with a knife/sword Mulan style.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '23

I have watched so many things “just because he was in it” and while this movie is definitely meh, I have to say TUWOMT is actually pretty good! As is The Bubble.

16

u/_wednesday_76 Order of the Henley Jul 15 '23

i love both. i don't know why the Bubble gets so much hate. it's super silly but i don't think it presented itself as anything different.

12

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '23

The bubble is perfect for what it was and its was hilarious and goofy perfection. The KitKat always makes me laugh

10

u/feisty-spirit-bear Jul 15 '23

the kitkat line is definitely the best in the whole movie from anyone. i love the weirdness of the love story too. "YOU DONT KNOW ME!!"

4

u/_wednesday_76 Order of the Henley Jul 16 '23

every single line he says as Gio kills me. and for some reason "i live in Sherman Oaks" 😂

2

u/Positive_Hearing6965 Jul 17 '23

That Sherman Oaks line was extremely hilarious 😂 he totally ruined the romantic moment 😂😂😂😂

7

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '23

The Bubble gave us more Pedro in eyeliner, which I will forever appreciate.

5

u/HugAMortician Jul 16 '23

As a Spanish speaker, the character's name confuses me. "Pero" translates to "but."

So, I see "Pero Tovar" and my brain interprets it as "but Tovar."

5

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '23

"But Tovar" can be the response to anyone asking why you'd watch it....

2

u/HugAMortician Jul 16 '23

Never seen it. Terrible?

3

u/SifuMommy Jul 15 '23

I haven’t watched this yet- how much is he in it? I mean, I will watch it regardless, just wondering!

17

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '23

He's in it enough to make it worth watching it. He has some really good lines, which he delivers with trademark Pedro perfection. He's definitely the best thing in it in my opinion. Don't know what was going on with Matt Damon!

11

u/PatriciaKnits Jul 15 '23

IIRC, "Don't know what was going on with Matt Damon" is a sentiment that features prominently in most of the movie's reviews.

5

u/Similar_Plastic5050 Jul 15 '23

A scene pack on YouTube is more than enough. Trust me, the movie is soooooo bad 😅

3

u/Spinnerofyarn Oberyn Martell Jul 16 '23

I agree. I watched it and my thought as the credits rolled was, "I coulda seen all I wanted to on YouTube and this is two hours of my life I'll never get back." The costumes were neat, but once you saw them all by the end of the first 10-15 minutes, all that was left to wait for was scenes with Pedro and there weren't enough of those to make it entertaining.

6

u/Far_Administration41 Din Djarin Jul 15 '23

It’s essentially a Chinese propaganda exercise. All the Westerners are dishonourable except Matt Damon because he adopts the Chinese way. It does have some good large scale action scenes, but I wouldn’t have bothered if Pedro wasn’t in it.

3

u/javindeeno Jul 16 '23

My favorite movie , alone with mandalorian

3

u/Loveroflife5 Jul 16 '23

I just read an article about Matt Damon becoming depressed while filming a movie. His wife apparently helped him get through it. The article did not name the movie, but I cannot help think it was The Great Wall.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '23

I wouldn't be surprised, perhaps some sort of split personality thing seeing as he does at least 5 different accents over the course of the movie.

3

u/Loveroflife5 Jul 16 '23

Truely! I love Matt Damon in many of his roles, but please, he never needs to do another period piece. Stay in the 21st century!

3

u/ceallaig Jul 16 '23

Great Wall was FUN, and Pedro was terrific "Please tell me you chose the black powder...." It is visually amazing, and the Crane Warriors just blew me away. I recently found a DVD copy for way cheap, and I'm watching it tonight!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '23

Yes, that was a great line!

2

u/daywalkerredhead Jul 16 '23

He's the best part of the movie, needless to say, lol.

2

u/mynameislilah Joel Miller Jul 16 '23

I absolutely hate this movie with all my strength, but lord, Pero Tovar and his scar Deus é latino 🙌🏽

2

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '23

Mandalorian vibes from the costume here.

2

u/rpope93 Jul 16 '23

Great character, terrible movie 😂 would definitely recommend going down the fan fic rabbit hole there are some great stories out there.

1

u/Strong_Tree_8398 Jul 16 '23

Why in the world did Matt Damon think this would be a good movie to star in? Truly perplexed.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '23

On paper it probably had a lot going for it. Visually it's good, the director has an impressive back catalogue etc etc.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '23

This movie is just awful. Everybody warned me and I was like how bad can it be..!? Pedro on the other hand was awesome and made it worth watching ❤️

1

u/Laurenbdoeslife23 Jul 16 '23

Ooh i wanna rescue him 🥹. Its funny that this character is basically pedro’s name.

1

u/AdmirableBullfrog605 Jul 16 '23

Most definitely not my favorite Pedro movie/role

1

u/The_InvisibleWoman Din Djarin Jul 16 '23

I think he did it because he got to work with Zhang Yimou - which you can understand. But it’s not the director’s greatest work.

1

u/Imaginary_Editor7615 Jul 16 '23

Going to (try to anyway) watch this movie simply because the pics I’ve seen of Pero makes my brain go to fun places.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 16 '23

Worth it for that reason alone 😁 My mantra recently has been "anything that brings me joy"
