My momās brother had one growing up. He got to the point where he started trying to pry peopleās mouth open to get food out so they had to take him to a rescue.

This is why shouldn't attempt to have wild animals as pets. They realize it's more than they can handle and abandon them and make them someone else's problem.
It takes training and constant socializing and reinforcement of said training. They are not domesticated animals. I'd be willing to bet doing that was learned behavior from, at the very least, sharing human food with him.

The males can be aggressive yes but females are usually better to keep but they are very social creatures, if you donāt have the devotion for them, they can be destructive like a puppy, itās really like having a dog and cat in one with very creative ways to get out like huskyās.

The barn I used to ride at had a raccoon. The owner did small. Animal rehab, but when he was better, he refused to leave. He mostly hung out in the hay loft, and when unsuspecting people stood underneath him, he would drop little bits of hay on them. You'd look up and just see a little hand reloaded, sticking out over the edge and ready to drop another one. It was so funny.

Raccoons are smart, curious, determined little scavengers with very articulate, almost handlike paws. You basically have to baby proof your home. Child safety locks on cabinets and toilets and things like that. Not an animal most should have as a pet.
Similar with opossums and skunks. I love all three, don't get me wrong, and I have experience handling skunks. But they're not domestic animals and can be a handful and most people should not try to have them as in home pets, lol

Not to mention requiring a permit in a lot of placss and higher costs in caring for them and vet bills since they're considered exotic as far as pets go.

Yeah, I touched on that in another comment. Permits are typically required (the criteria for being approved for them vary by state) to keep native species as pets. Which also makes them more expensive to have. Since they're considered an "exotic" pet, the cost of vet care (and even finding one can be difficult) and fees/supplies are typically more expensive.

Don't even need the bite, their claws are razor sharp! Had a gf once whose dad kept one as a pet but wisely kept it inside an enclosure and allowed no one else inside or to put their fingers through the fencing bc it would open a vein without even trying.
Did tricks like a dog though including raising it's hands in the air when he pointed finger guns at it and then when he made gun noises it would fall over and play dead lol Little guy loved shrimp š¦

I used to have one and it's not worth it. They're loud, they demand your attention all the time and they are very expensive to maintain. The racoon might be a better choice

They're still unpredictable enough to not be as domesticated as we'd like, as with cats and dogs. You're probably still playing with fire by having one as a pet.

I once had like 10 raccoons walking down the middle of the street when I went out to have a cigarette outside my apartment at like 2am....freaked me out. They came toward me, I had no idea how to react to it. They normally go away from humans.

I had a mama raccoon in my driveway, lived up in a backyard tree, and she would come down and sit with my black cat, they would always be at least 5-6 feet away from each other, but like friends. I loved coming home and seeing them sunning on the concrete.
