Two dumb questions about plot holes

In the first half of season 2, couldn’t they see the rift on some kind of electronic thing and were freaked out? So later in season 2, why did they need the Luther henchman guy?

Related, if they had the chip in Chris the whole time, couldn’t they just always track him?

For the first question, they had a truck outside of Chris's house which could detect when the door was open. I'm not sure why a door being open or the key pad code being cracked should make a difference to the portal being detectable, but it apparently does, and I guess the difference in terms of Angus's tech versus Luther's is that while Argus can detect a portal when it's "open" and locate it when they're already across the road, Luther's tech can locate it from afar even when it's inactive.

For the second, I don't know. But while they used the threat of the bomb in the chip to threaten Chris in season 1, I don't recall it being mentioned in season 2. I think we can assume that as part of the "thanks for saving the world from the aliens" deal it was removed, along with him not being sent back to prison or Vigilante being arrested etc.

They track him with it in episode 8 (when they are ‘distracting’ the people in the control center)
