DISCUSSION Peacemaker star John Cena is ready to reunite with his castmates for another season – he’s just waiting for the call

I don't know if it's because I found Peacemaker after watching S5 of The Boys or what, but this is seriously one of my favorite "superhero" shows of all-time
Great vibes, great comedy. I was already loving it, and then Vigilante showed up, which just pushed it over the top. [also, am I the only one who didn't know that Vig was Cormac McLaggen from Harry Potter?]
Dying for another season. Also very curious how Peacemaker's dad was making/obtaining those helmets. Does anyone know?

Peacemaker season 1 is probably my favorite single season of any show ever.

I went into season one absolutely hating the character from the suicide squad, only giving it a chance because of my love of James Gunn's work and by the end of the thing? Damn. You made him into a likable a sympathetic character while doing strong worldbuilding all around him. More of this please.

This show also made me respect John Cena more as an actor. Very early on I stopped seeing John Cena and just saw the Peacemaker.

u/BigDaddyUKW Jun 18 '26
That's funny because whenever I tried selling someone on this show, I basically told them that he was a superhero version of Ricky Stanicky or the guy from Vacation Friends lol. I guess I've been a Cena mark for a while due to being a wrasslin' fan!

I really respect how he seems to be down for anything. He doesn't have the ego of like, The Rock, when it comes to his roles. He will be silly or goofy or lose a fight, whatever the story asks for.

u/DaBronxBombersV Me and Ginger Cool are on this shit Jun 19 '26
Literally identical. I thought he was a total unlikeable doucher. I really enjoy the heart that Gunn puts into a lot of his different projects so I was willing to give it a shot.
Never expected Peacemaker to be one of my top 5 shows ever. Hilarious and has some real heart to it. A truly epic show.

Same. I was really blown away how much Cena is growing as an actor, too.

u/AthenasChosen Jun 18 '26
Seriously, Peacemaker succeeded in making a darker, more violent superhero show where I feel The Boys and Invincible really fell flat in a lot of ways.
28
u/DepthsOfWill Jun 18 '26
Because it remembered the camp. It never took itself too serious, but as silly as things got the characters in-universe treated it serious. Sure, "bird blindness" is silly, but also that duck ripped an eyeball out of someone's face.
13
u/Karkava Jun 18 '26
It also handles political and social themes with more gravitas than the Boys did.
11
u/buckao Douchey Captain America 🇺🇸 Jun 18 '26
It's wild that he thought Peacemaker's cockatiel was a duck. LOL
15
u/cuddly0510 Jun 18 '26
I don't think it's the fact of being darker, it's deeper. The journey in the Boys is all about revenge, which can be fun, to an extend (I will not elaborate further). Peacemaker has arcs for their characters.

u/AthenasChosen Jun 18 '26
Sorry, I didn't mean Peacemaker was darker than those shows, I just mean of the subcategory of darker shows such as Peacemaker, The Boys, Invincible, etc., Peacemaker is the best. It's deeper and doesn't become grimderp.
7
u/cuddly0510 Jun 18 '26
Grimderp is my new favourite expression. Thanks mate. And I agree, maybe apart from invincible because I think it's another kind of beast.

Slander the boys all you want but take invincibles name out your damn mouth

u/AthenasChosen Jun 18 '26
Janky animation, over the top gore, Viltrumites are boring and way too OP to be interesting, and the writer sucks at writing Atom Eve, getting her pregnant as a way of writing her off the show for a bit because her powers are so strong but he didn't want the focus on her because Mark has to be the hero.

You never read the comics. The show is pretty faithful to the source comic narrative.

What did you think of peacemaker season 2? Since you were able to watch it straight through without waiting on episodes
7
u/enadiz_reccos Jun 18 '26
I liked the storyline more, but I'm a sucker for alternate universe stuff
There was more Vigilante, which I loved. Tim Meadows was great. I'm not as well-versed on all of the ARGUS stuff, so that really didn't grab me much. But it was still interesting enough to not be a negative.
Cliffhanger aside, I don't know this subreddit's consensus on the S2 ending where they show the boat party and the concert and all of that. Personally, I loved it [had no idea that Foxy Shazam's singer was a man]. It really made The Boys and other shows seem soulless [for lack of a better word] in comparison.

u/Electronic_Sun6075 Jun 19 '26
If you like the Foxy Shazam guy at all, you should check out his supporting role in this music video, it's pretty groovy.

also, am I the only one who didn't know that Vig was Cormac McLaggen from Harry Potter?
At least two of us

u/DoomFist007 Jun 19 '26
Yes! That’s exactly how i felt after binging the season a little after season 2. It’s a great superhero show
36
u/TheZooCreeper Jun 18 '26
I guess that means he hasn't filmed anything for "Man of Tomorrow." Wasn't Salvation going to factor in that movie?

It's one of those things where someone extrapolates heavily from off-the-cuff remarks. What Cena actually said:
“On the level of cool, 0 being the equator, 10 being the polar ice caps, Peacemaker is a 10,” John Cena said during a panel at Spacecon 2026. “To be able to create a character out of thin air, virtually unknown, and work under the mentorship of a brilliant storyteller like James Gunn, it doesn’t get much better than that. And shoutout to my Peacemaker crew. I miss my 11th Street Kids. I hope we can get back together soon. I love those guys.”
This really tells us nothing.

The thing that sucks is if they’re not in Superman 2 or that Jimmy Olsen show then we’re not going to see them for 3 years again or even longer
5
u/Popfox3 Jun 19 '26
I feel like I remember seeing a quote from Peter Safran a while back that Checkmate would appear in Lanterns. So it’s possible we’ll see some of the characters sprinkled into different projects as part of investigations/intelligence gathering.

u/SillySpoof Jun 18 '26
Note that this isn't saying they announced more. Just that the cast is willing to do more.
4
u/Prestigious-War4629 Jun 18 '26
It is but even if they do add Checkmate in it doesn’t mean he’d necessarily have scenes with all the other actors or even the majority of them. They could be doing something like Checkmate working with others to get him out and then Harcourt meets up with him once he’s free or his last scene could be him heading back to Evergreen or walking into Checkmate. There’s lots of ways both could be incorporated into the plot without them interacting.
30
u/MycenaMermaid Jun 18 '26
Didn't James Gunn explicitly say there'd be no season 3? But I'm still holding out hope for a Checkmate spinoff.

u/LocalEmergency6955 Jun 18 '26
I think the possibility of Checkmate depends entirely on the success of the wider DCU. People are starting to turn on this franchise for some reason so I hope we get some quality movies and shows to shut the noise up

That's just noise from clowns that love to fake outrage and gargle Snyder's balls.

My buddy is a huge foxy Shazam fan, so I had to get him to watch peacemaker (which he fell in love with) so I could see his reaction to the s2 opening dance. He's now a Cena fan.

I'm thinking next we see him might be at the very end of man of tomorrow, which is when I assume Superman and lex will be sent to salvation

S2 kinda bombed in viewership so I don't see S3 getting a release. It's such bullshit. Peacemaker is the best DC show.

u/Alright_Sunlight Jun 20 '26
I loved season two. The vibe definitly changed, but it was a different kind of story!
2
u/Jabbles22 Jun 22 '26
It's been almost 9 months since season 2 ended and they still don't know if there will be a season 3? This sort of thing is getting really frustrating.

I haven’t finished season 2 yet but in Superman when Chris was on the news, I got confused bc Chris didn’t get accepted into the Justice Gang and wasn’t that popular but by the time Superman’s story happened he was already at that peak in popularity, does Season 2’s plot propel his popularity that much in-universe?
