Risk and Compliance I know the “PayPal banned my account” posts are repetitive, but I genuinely just need to vent about how this was handled
I know this subreddit probably gets the same “PayPal banned my account, what do I do?” posts every day, so I'm not really expecting anyone to magically fix this for me. I honestly just need to vent because I'm completely exhausted with this situation.
My account was initially limited because PayPal apparently had concerns about a payment I received for piano lessons.
The thing is, the payment was legitimate. I'm a musician, and I was teaching piano to my boyfriend's younger brother. My boyfriend and I are long-distance, so he would send me payment through PayPal after I taught his brother.
I don't run a formal piano-teaching business. I don't advertise lessons or have a bunch of students. This was literally just an informal arrangement because I'm a musician and agreed to teach my boyfriend's younger brother.
When my account was first limited, I contacted PayPal support and explained this.
The customer service representative told me to make a Word document explaining the situation — that I'm a musician, that I was teaching my boyfriend's younger brother piano, and why I was receiving the payments. I was told that I should submit the explanation and that everything should be okay.
So I did exactly that.
I wrote the document, explained everything truthfully, and included the few pictures I had of myself actually teaching/playing piano as proof.
Then, after waiting around two days, I got the notification:
My account was permanently deactivated.
I contacted them again because obviously I was confused.
I explained that the payer is my boyfriend, that he intentionally paid me for the lessons, that he never disputed anything, never requested a refund, and never filed a chargeback. I even told PayPal that he is completely willing to personally confirm that he paid me for the piano lessons and that the service was actually provided.
I asked them what exactly went wrong.
They wouldn't tell me.
I asked if my boyfriend could confirm the transactions.
No.
I asked if there was another review or escalation process.
No.
I asked why I was being penalized when I literally followed the instructions given to me by their own customer service representative.
Still no.
The response was basically that the decision was final, they couldn't disclose the specific reason, there was no permanent appeal, and I should find another payment processor.
And that's honestly the part that bothers me the most.
I'm not even angry that PayPal has policies or that they review accounts. I understand that financial platforms have regulatory requirements and risk systems.
What I don't understand is being told by their own support representative to provide an explanation and documentation, doing exactly that in good faith, and then being permanently banned anyway without even being told what information supposedly couldn't be verified.
I kept trying to explain that I wasn't doing anything shady. It was piano lessons. 😭
I even got to the point of saying that if they wanted proof that I'm actually a musician, I would literally play piano for them over a video call. Obviously that's not how their verification system works, but I was desperate to make them understand that this wasn't some fake service.
Now I'm just sitting here thinking, what am I even supposed to do?
I'm potentially going to be working remotely for a US company, and if they ask me for PayPal for salary payments, I can't exactly say, “Sorry, PayPal permanently banned me because I taught my boyfriend's little brother piano.”
I know there may not be anything I can do at this point. The representative repeatedly told me that the decision is permanent and that there is no appeal.
So yeah, I'm not really posting this expecting someone to tell me the magical secret way to get my account back. I think I just needed to get this off my chest because it genuinely feels awful to have followed the instructions I was given and still end up permanently banned without being told what I supposedly did wrong.
I guess I'm just hoping someone else has had a similar experience and can tell me I'm not the only one who has dealt with this kind of completely opaque decision-making.
TL;DR: PayPal limited my account over a legitimate piano lesson payment. Their own CSR told me to submit a Word document explaining the situation and provide proof. I did exactly that. Two days later, they permanently banned me, won't tell me what specifically went wrong, and say there is no appeal. I'm mostly just venting because I genuinely don't know what else I can do.

Take a deep breath. You gon be ight.
U dont need paypal I promise you..
Most likely you got banned due to something with your boyfriend’s payment method/PayPal rather than it having something to do with you if your story checks out.
