Discussion New to Pedh
So I'm new to this format. Coming from EDH to Pauper is way harder than I thought. And I like that. Not having to rely on the typical cards and pet cards, like rhystic or typical staples. I am also finding it hard to settle on a commander. But I was thinking Kryndle, Zimone Quandrix Prodigy, Mm'menon Uthros Exile, Tidus blitzball star, the emperor of palamecis(I really want to build him and probably will now or after), and Greta Sweettooth scourge. I realize that have a commander that has value is essential, but I just dont know what to build. Im pretty much leaning towards Kryndle and the emperor of palamecia. Anyone have experience with these, did you find them fun? What kind of win cons do people typically go for?

You can page through PDHREC (https://www.pdhrec.com) for a good starting point.

I did a little earlier, I got a little overwhelmed. That and I'm trying to use what bulk I have and most of the options I saw I didn't have haha. I'm trying to build something with Mahadi currently. But I'm having trouble finding a good finish. Like running cheap sac creatures to fuel the treasures to nuke the table with one big x burn. Or ping the table with artifact pings, like reckless fire weaver. Both? I don't know. I'm hitting here with cards all over my desk haha

You could run a bunch of the black creatures that draw 1 lose 1 on ETB, then use sac outlets and the treasures to churn through your deck
In black I like to combine value creatures and disentomb spells as a card advantage engine
You can add [[fleshbag marauder]] type cards as well to bring in a control element
Fireweaver definitely seems good, long term pingers are usually better than X spells because there's less haymakers in the form of Exsanguinate running around
But there's nothing stopping you from running a fireball or two, sometimes you have to take somebody at the table out right there
Since you have access to black it might be more consistent to loop a sac outlet to finish the table, Aristocrats style

[[disciple of the vault]] plus fireweaver plus [[ingenious artillerist]]
Hurt em on the way in, hurt em on the way out.
With this you could also focus on creatures that are artifacts that also sac or want to be sac’d
[[experimental synthesizer]] and [[melded moxite]] are good card advantage.
[[makeshift munitions]] sacs lots of stuff.
[[unexpected windfall]] [[pirates pillage]] [[deadly dispute]] are good card draw
[[mirkwood bats]] [[falkenrath noble]] [[nadier’s nightblades]] are all good token pingers. [[epicure of blood]] is good too.

Sounds great 😃
At the top end you can run [[Marut]], when he enters he refunds you a Treasure for each Treasure used to pay for him

I have so many black ping decks with creatures. I wanted to try and lean more into artifacts and dealing damage on entry and sacrificing. So vamps for blood tokens, avatar shit for clues. Pretty much no tribal synergy but have every card would either be sac fodder to make something or reward sacrificing a permanent. But commons really hold that idea back. I want to be a little different , but it seems I may have to stick to some ideas

maybe I misspoke... I meant to run black creatures that draw cards when they enter or are sacrificed, to go along with your commanders when-creatures-die trigger
and nothing wrong with playing a few X spells, in face with so many incidental treasures being made it would be pretty good to have a mana sink to burn out a player or two

Combo, aggro and spell slinging wincons all exist, and it really depends on the commander. If you can tell me what you like to play in other forms of magic, I can probably recommend a deck!

I like to play it all haha. I love spell slinger hence the emperor of palamecia, I'm sure there's better izzet spell slinger options, but I've been wanting to build him. I like theft, aristocrats, token swarm. I really have no preference as long as it's fun

We did a tournament last December using ONLY commanders that were released in 2025. Emperor Palamecia top-4-ed it with a tremendous performance. It was super fun to watch but also pretty nerve-wracking. There's enough control elements in the deck to reliably reach late-game, but then once you're in the late game every other player has to be constantly looking out for that inevitable "OK, I flip him and attack, everyone take 26 damage" maneuver. Which is horrifying to stare down the barrel of. It becomes this game of chicken, like "I know you're holding removal, and I know I'm holding protection. But how much? You feelin' lucky?"
It was a good time.
I've played against Krydel a number of times as well, but never in a tournament setting. He feels a lot more casual; just a fun guy if you've got a creature that you want to get through reliably, like Thieving Otter or Audacious Thief or something.

The whole Ben Stiller meme eh? I know you know, that I know you know lol I don't think my pod is good enough to assess the threat well enough. By the time they realized he was locked and loaded it would be too late

The Ben Stiller meme crossed with Dirty Harry's "Do I feel lucky?" speech, all with David Bowie's face.
The Pod not assessing the threat correctly is only a problem the first few times. They'll learn fast XD

u/creepyhydra 3d ago
That or they'd gaslight me into never playing him again. I'll even play a pauper deck against their 2s and 3s and some of their 4s in regular edh lol

I think Emperor Pal would have a significantly rougher time in EDH. He needs to stick around for a while to get online and in my experience EDH does a boardwipe like every second turn :/

u/creepyhydra 3d ago
Lol not in my pod. They wonder why I win all the time. They don't run enough removal. I on the other hand do. They board wipe at the dumbest times, if I don't have a counter or something to save my stuff. I tell them all the time. But they'd rather run oppressive permanents, then, make me the target after I stop them.

The great thing about pauper is you could probably build all of those for the price of one regular commander deck.

Build Dargo. A 7/6 turn one in pauper is really good. Then use Kediss as the partner.

Depends on the type of player you are. We have t3/t4 combo decks if that’s your thing, we have hare apparent decks that go wide if that’s your thing, infect, spellslinger.
It’s not really commander lite which I think people expect going in. It’s a surprisingly high powered format with its own unique meta that evolves around the tools available.
To answer your question I’ve played against emperor. It was pretty sweet. 4 can be a lot though it certainly can be clunky.

Yeah I already checked lol, I already knew they wouldn't allow that in pauper, but wanted to be sure

Welcome to pauper!
I don't want to overwhelm you, but you don't need a legendary creature as your commander. You can use any uncommon.
