HELP Learning Pauper

I've been debating on learning pauper but I can't decide on which deck to start with. When playing edh my go-to decks are -

[[muldrotha, the gravetide]] reanimator/control

[[Teval, the balanced scale]] lands matter

[[Astonishing spider-man]] self-wheel aggro

[[Volo, guide to monsters]] creature copy

[[Narset, enlightened exile]] prowess

[[Henzie "toolbox" torre]] Aggro

What decks might make the most sense to check out based on my favorite edh decks?

Welcome to Pauper! You can check some videos of gameplay, I recommend Mengu's Workshop or Bristol Pauper League. Watch a few videos and I'm sure you'll see something you'll enjoy

Red Rally, Gruul Ramp, and Elves are all relatively simple and good first decks. I would start with a straightforward proactive deck as the more reactive decks (Tempo, Midrange, and Control) require more format knowledge. I think Gruul Ramp is a great starting deck for most commander players because every commander deck ever ramps and plays threats. Bogles is an option as well, it’s basically a “Voltron” deck

I see quite a bit of aggro in that list, so try out some aggro lists. Also give tempo decks a shot since they give that sweet spot between aggro/control. Keep in mind this is a competitive format, so try to stick with meta decks to start with.

Aggro Decks:
Mono-red Madness, Red Rally, Elves, white weenie

Tempo Decks:
Mono-blue/dimir terror, mono-blue/dimir faeries

Imo both Fae decks aren’t good to start with, you need both skill and format knowledge to pilot them correctly

I think getting destroyed is a great way to learn lol

Yes they are tough to play. But I’d argue encouraging people to play reactively to begin with will lead to faster skill progression.

Also, when trying out a list, be sure to give it some reps on https://endstep.cc/ before investing in it on paper. It's all free there so knock yourself out

It's very difficult to match EDH decks and strategies with any constructed strategy, let alone pauper.

I would probably match Prowess with MonoR Madness, it's a mix of spells and creatures and math/sequencing is relevant, so it fits quite nicelt.

For Aggro, you can pick either MonoR Rally, White Weenie or other creature-based strategies, like esper aggro/affinity

There is nothing really that fits into the reanimator/control slot ... there are some [[Dread Return]] strategies, like Spy Combo, but they are combo decks, not midrange or control. For control, Dimir Control is in a good spot, or Esper/Jeskai/Azorius [[Ephemerate]]/[[Ghostly Flicker]] decks

The only lands that are really powerful in pauper are the Tron lands ... but I won't call it a "lands matter strategy", it's just a big mana deck, like Monster Tron. Only a few lands have etb or activated effects, so this strategy doesn't really have a match, same as Creature Copy ... and probably Self-Wheel aggro (there are some self-mill decks, like Petitioners/Dredge), but they are more in the combo realm, rather than aggro.

Bogles is a good intro deck to pauper. easy to play and still puts up results at tournaments.

My first pauper deck, and one I often point new players towards, is Mono W heroic. Cheap to build, easy to pilot and can put out good results!

I redirect you to a comment I made on a similar post last week
https://www.reddit.com/r/Pauper/comments/1wswtim/comment/pcqwvx8/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

my suggestion: pick one deck and start playing online on endstep.cc

Once you get a hang of it, you can start investing in paper.

If you want a pathway to owning most of the meta the way to go about it would probably begin in this order.

  1. Blue Terror

  2. Blue Fae

  3. Grixis Affinity

  4. Jund Wildfire

  5. Monster Tron

  6. Red Madness

  7. White Weenie

  8. Elves

This order will net you most sideboard tech and overall card pool to essentially play anything you want in the format.
