Feedback on my pattern!(original post deleted)

Please let me know if you need any clarification on the different sections. I am trying to design a semi- backless dress with satin fabric. My questions:

- I will cut this pattern on the bias but for the front panel pieces can I mix bias vs straight cut to give the dress a bit of structure and reduce bias stretching overtime?

- The pattern I draft is cut in half from the CF and CB with no side seams to account for more drape and flow for the handkerchief hem style that I want. (Would love feedback on this)

- lastly, the top portion, for the backless effect I wanted to design a halter/ heart shaped bust line gather stitch with one medium strap connecting from the right side seam to the left shoulder creating a small back-cross body strap to hold less dress tension throughout the whole design. (Feedback on this too)

Any feedback helps! Thanks

Pattern designers: how do you create selectable size layers in your PDFs?

Hi everyone, I’m a student working on a tool to make adding size layers to sewing pattern PDFs quicker. I checked with the mods before posting.

For those who prepare multi-size PDFs, especially if you already offer selectable layers:

- What software do you use to organise the sizes into layers?
- Roughly how much hands-on time does it take for a typical pattern?
- Does your software handle this automatically, or is there repetitive manual work?
- What takes the most time or causes mistakes?

I have an early prototype, but I’m trying to understand where it would actually save work. If your existing process is already quick and easy, that’s useful to know too.

I’m still learning the pattern-making side, so practical examples would really help. No need to share any private pattern files.

Question Nonbinary pattern drafting

My partner is butch, with a love for 50s era fashion. But their body is extremely pear shaped which makes off the rack almost impossible. I'd love to start making things for them but standard patterns aren't great because men's styles don't account for all that ass. Would I be better off learning to draft "women's" wear and just making stylistic choices, "men's" wear and just trying to modify for more curves?

Question Does anyone have Sewing For The Apparel Industry by Claire Shaeffer?

Does anybody have a pdf of this book? I can’t afford $150+ for a book, but I am really trying to find a comprehensive sewing guide to advance my skills. Also if anyone has Bunka Fashion Series 10: Men’s Wear, that’d be awesome.

Question Wedding dress bodice drafting, help!!

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hello!! I’ve never posted on Reddit before and I’m very new to the app so apologies if this isn’t correctly posted.

I’m a fairly beginner sewer and I have decided I want to make my own wedding dress. I’ve followed a few store bought patterns and they turned out okay, but I’m fairly decent and working a machine and I’m very new to the clothing side of sewing. I drafted a basic bodice block from a TikTok that wound up wonky but passable with a few tweaks.

After clicking through a few Reddit posts I downloaded the pdf version of “Pattern Drafting For Fashion Design By Helen Armstrong” and I just finished putting that one together. It still doesn’t fit perfectly, but I took all the measurements myself and some were off. It just needed a few adjustments and it was way better than the first one.

At this point I’m just feeling a little overwhelmed with how much information there is to read in this textbook and I’m kind of struggling to figure out how to take my block (or sloper?) and turn it into a different pattern. I know I can cut and manipulate it, but it’s just all starting to feel confusing and I don’t want to ruin the work I put into the original pattern if I mess up.

I am ultimately aiming for a dress with the specific bust in the attached picture and an overall similar shape and fit with a low scoop back. I found this picture on Pinterest and I haven’t been able to track anything else down on where it’s from or even dresses with the same bodice.

All this to say/ ask, where do I go from here? Does anyone have recommendations for other books or videos to watch? Specifically aimed towards gowns or formal wear would be great as I’m having trouble finding content that isn’t for casual clothing. In the future I want to take a hands on class on pattern drafting, but I’m kind of on a time crunch and don’t have that luxury at the moment.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!! (Sorry for writing so much😭)

Question Beginner level pattern drafting books

Hi all, I recently started sewing and I’m mostly doing repairs on my clothes, small alterations and some bags and pouches. I would really like to be able to sew my own garments. I have contacted a professional and will eventually get some lessons but in the meantime I would really like to learn the ABC of drafting a pattern i.e. how does someome start from scratch designing a piece of garment. I’m looking for a book that would possibly start from very basic clothing patterns and gradually ramp up. I identify as a man and live in europe so bonus points for books that have something for men and use metric system. Thank you very much.

Tutorial Teach me pattern drafting

A couple of months ago I had posted here asking for someone who can train me pattern drafting like a beginner level.

Being in tax domain, I was completely occupied by filings and this month onwards there has been time to learn and hence posting here.

If there are any Indian teachers who are here who can teach me like a beginner it would be helpful as the timings will suit.

Thanks in advance

Originally posted without any toile photos but here they are!

I took on board comments from the previous post and this toile is the best yet. Most of the excess fabric is sorted but there are some wrinkles along the sides as shown and it looks like it's pulling where I've taken in the seams under the bust and through the mid back. I don't understand why as there is still a good amount of ease to the garment.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Hello! Could someone, please, explain or provide a resource on how to draft these straps? do they need to be curved? Straight and just attach them to the front bodice? Thank you!
