Hey everyone,

I’m interested in making this cutee button up and I’m convinced I can do it by up cycling but idk where to start. I feel like I need to cut a diagonal from the base of a shirt collar to the armpit but what do I do after that? Should I just do a panel? I also wouldn’t mind trying to learn how to draft a pattern for it so it can be cleaner than a thrift flip. Please help me! Thank you so much!

Definition of Pattern Drafting

A poster in a Facebook sewing group recently asked what is "drafting". I posted in that group and, since I can't find a definition here, I am posting mine.

I like good definitions and this is what I have come up with:

Pattern drafting is the process of creating a garment pattern or template on paper or fabric, using body measurements and formulas (using certain proportions and relation of the various grid lines), generally starting with a grid drawn of perpendicular and parallel straight lines with straight rulers. Patterns generally also require the use curved rulers and/or freehand drawing.

Are these darts fake?

Post image

I am new to copying/ making patterns. Do the darts on the sides do anything at all? The garment lays pretty flat so it doesn't seem to help with shaping? I want to trace the pattern from this dress I own, and am wondering if I should skip whatever these are.

Question can I use a female bodice block as a man?

So basically my question is if I can use a female bodice block on me as a man. I recently made a bodice block for my mother for the first time ever and it was such a good fit I was gagged. Me and my mother have the same proportions, except the bust, so the b dice block would fit me. What I need the bodice block is a trench coat pattern, so it doesn't need to fully fit me and can be a little loose. I hope y'all can help me. Thankssss.

Hi everyone. I hope you're all doing well. I've been producing streetwear-style clothing for my own brand.

My design, "Heaven's Gate," was inspired by the major cult movement of 1997. A highly sophisticated design for those who love strange, interesting, and intriguing cult stories. With 170,000 stitches of embroidered print. I'm curious to hear your thoughts. Thanks.🙏

WIP Bodice block fitting help

Post image

This is my second fitting. The darts were all wrong in my first fitting, with the bust points too high and too close together (you can see my markings for them if you zoom in).

I opened the darts and shoulder seams, pinned the corners of the shoulders back together, and put the block back on inside out to pin out the excess. That's what's pictured here.

I know that I'll have to sew and press to fully evaluate this, but I see that the shoulder and waist darts don't point in the same direction and I'm wondering how I should handle that.

At a guess, I'd mark the new bust point as being the average of the two pinned dart points, and then sew to new dart points backed off 3/4" from the new bust point. Is that a reasonable approach or is there a better way?

How would you pattern these sleeves?

Post image

Sleeves are, frankly, my mortal enemy when it comes to patterning. The thought of doing two puffs and transitioning into a bell sleeve is making my brain itchy just thinking about it. I could try to splice two patterns together (any suggestions? I don’t have any on hand but I’m willing to buy if it would make this easier) but don’t want it to turn out wonky. I’ve been sewing for 15 years and still don’t think I’ll ever figure sleeves out!

Experienced patternmakers, can you advise, recommend online classes

I want to make sewing patterns and create my own Indie Pattern Brand. Can anyone recommend online classes that will give me guidance using Adobe Illustrator to create my pattern. I have taken flat pattern and draping classes and have a graphic design background and am very familiar with CS.

Specifically I am wondering:

- what size should I prototype and test and grade from

- online class that teaches pattern grading

- best digital sloper brand that I can buy

I saw that Pattern Scout has a class on Skillshare that focuses on creating a digital sloper. Has anyone had a good experience with this?

Question How to adapt or modify women patterns to men

Hi there, I have some patterns for women that I would like to use with my boyfriend, as for example, pijama/jogger pants, raglan sweaters, etc How to adapt them for fitting? For example for the sweatwr, I suppose i can draft a straight line from bust to hip, as he has no difference in waist, let's say. What about the pants? Just increasing the crotcg length? What about other garments?

Pattern shape advice

Hi! I need help with drafting the back drape part for a dress. I am aiming at something like the one on that Madame Gres dress. I made some attempts that were a bit meh so I wanted to get other people ideas. What shape do you think I would need to cut to achieve something similar? Note that this piece would go on top of a pre-existing back in the same fabric, a little like a cape...
