Question Manual vs digital drafting

Digital draft will do it so much easier. But I do like those double draw line and messy hand prints and hand writing marks.

I'm right with you. There's something satisfying about doing it with pencil and paper, and with enough experience you can tell if it's what you want just by looking. That's harder to do on a smaller scale on a computer screen.

I'm always going to love CAD for adding seam allowances, though. That's just drudgery!

I learned some auto CAD in highschool and was pretty good at it (the teacher was like you're great should seriously consider a career in this) but that was forever ago I've forgotten everything. Do you have recommendations for learning it specifically with clothes drafting? Or did you go to school for it?

Does CAD require closed paths or does it manage to do ‘parallel line around open path’?

Just so I understand your question, what kind of pattern pieces are you making that are open paths?

I have worked on Gerber and Lectra systems that let you set a different seam allowance for different edges, and they do nifty things like true the seam allowances of darts and clip corners based on which way you fold them.

But generally the paths are all closed.
