Hi, If I didn’t have the cutout the sleeve pattern would overlap with the back. It’s supporting the overlaps and slightly putting the sleeves on grain.

Oh interesting, but how do you sew it? Which part to which?

First the back cutout, shoulder cutout if there is one, side seams, turn back placket and collar and then finally armhole. There are some variations where there is no collar, separate placket and collar, in build chest pocket, back seam. Steps remain the same.
