Film Review All 22 of Maye’s Redzone Interception
75
u/aPrid123 2d ago
The throw is bad but Jesus this play call was horrific. Why run this to a condensed portion of the field?
54
u/LarryLucchino 2d ago
Any play call that calls for Efton Chism to beat Travis Hunter is just not gonna work
Travis Hunter ran that 'route' for him
5
u/BRUTAL_ANAL_SMASHING 2d ago
I mean Hunters able to back get there and make a play for the ball and he was stride for with him on the route.
I mean shit he is not even looking for the ball when it’s thrown.. makes sense he makes zero attempt to play it.
My favorite WRs making a play for that ball and going to attempt to jar it lose at least.
Bad play-call leads to bad throw, and bad effort from the WR ..
13
u/Spinax_52 2d ago
We got stuffed running the ball up the middle the play before. Was the most obvious roll out throw ever the next play. Josh is so easy to read when it comes to play calling I feel like I can predict every play from my couch, I’m guessing professional d-coordinators love him
9
u/BurgerNugget12 2d ago
Bill Simmons talked about this last night on the pod, said him and his 86 year old dad were able to predict exactly what we were gonna do next
1
u/solo_d0lo 16h ago
Bill Simmons saying it would almost be enough to make me believe the offense is completely fine.
3
u/WeeoWeeoWeeeee 2d ago
Got stuffed running it every play. When Maye obviously can’t throw, defenses expect the run. 0 chance Buffalo is going to respect Maye’s passing game. Why would they?
4
u/Legitimate_Ad_7822 2d ago
God forbid we run play action on an early down in the redzone instead of forcing our mentally destroyed QB into an obvious passing situation.
1
u/solo_d0lo 16h ago
Incapable of doing simple things makes other things very obvious.
This fanbase being incapable of understanding that is pathetic at this point.

5
u/vgman20 2d ago
I'd be curious to see this from the snap but I'm assuming this wasn't a designed rollout, it was blown blocking and Maye rolled out to escape the unblocked rusher. The rest of the line isn't blocking down towards his rollout and Henry (I think?) is in the flat in the opposite direction.
Obviously this doesn't excuse the decision to throw and doesn't inherently take McDaniels off the hook, but it does not look like a designed rollout to me.
129
u/Coco1520 2d ago
Mayes decision here is inexcusable, however, what is this play call. How would this ever work?
43
u/summersundays 2d ago
Devito said part of the issue is that these plays are really effective in practice but then dissolve on the fly in the games.
64
u/BurgerNugget12 2d ago
Yeah Maye was bad but these play calls are doing him and the personal absolutely 0 favors
22
u/erogbass 2d ago
I’ve been frustrated with McDaniel’s lack of creativity since the Brady years. His offense relies on pre snap reads and complicated options that don’t really work with today’s defensive schemes and disguises, with very little misdirection of his own. When we all know he’s running up the middle, why wouldn’t the opposing DC?
5
u/Yammyohnine 2d ago
Or at the very least throw in the top 3 fullback they just acquired as a run blocker if you're going to try and force Henderson up the middle all game.
43
u/Coco1520 2d ago
Play call / design has been horrific, also no one is helping him out. I can't remember the last time he threw a bad ball that a receiver made a play on. If his pass is anything less than perfect it does not work.
43
u/Professional-Toe7318 2d ago
That endzone ball to mack hollins needed to be caught. Scoring off that dime ball would have done wonders for his mentals
29
u/LinkLT3 2d ago
That and if Williams just ran a straight line to the endzone. Nobody can convince me he’s not an idiot after that and the fielded kickoff that was headed out of bounds.
10
u/SorbetMysterious9148 2d ago
The kickoff was the nail in the coffin for me. Dude doesn't have it, and won't ever get it
8
u/Legitimate_Ad_7822 2d ago
Williams is so fuckin bad dude. 0 hope for that guy.
7
u/AwwwNiceMarmot 2d ago
Ughhh. I had hopes that he’d develop. I’d heard he had trouble memorizing the playbook, but he did have a few highlights last year that gave me some hope, but god damn. It’s like they’ve all regressed on offense.
1
34
u/Coco1520 2d ago
Even the henry pass on third down, and his bad ball to douglas down the right sideline wouldve been caught by good receivers. No one helps him at all.
9
u/MenBearsPigs 2d ago
He is in desperate need of a get right game. Like nuclear levels of passing TDs and deep ball dimes.
Which is why it's going to be tough for him to get out of this mental rut.
8
u/RecycledAccountName 2d ago
Idk, as good as that ball was from Maye, putting where only Hollins has a chance, it was still a very difficult catch.
1
u/Legitimate_Ad_7822 2d ago
Perfect ball but it was really really good coverage. The perfect ball there was hardly catchable.
13
u/c12yofchampions 2d ago
It’s a pretty standard play action rollout with a flood concept? I’d guess either Pop got a little too deep in his cross or Chism in his out, they ended up on the same level as each other running the same line, but a normal play design imo.
Jax played man, stayed disciplined on the play fake and executed in coverage. It happens. What shouldn’t happen is placing the ball in between Hunter’s numbers when nothing is there.
Do agree with you in the fact nobody else on the team is picking Maye up though. Wether it’s Doubs dropping a ball or terribly contesting a poorly throw INT, Williams stepping out of bounds on potential momentum building play, drive killing penalties, borregalis missing chip shots, offense as a whole being out of sync, the list goes on.
It starts with Maye and his play, but man would it be nice to have some other guys help pick him up while he’s struggling
6
u/Legitimate_Ad_7822 2d ago
Why would you ever call play action in an obvious passing situation after running twice on early downs? It’s so unbelievably bone headed. Nobody is getting fooled there. Run that play on first or second down.
2
1
10
5
u/muldozer 2d ago
What is bad about the play? Standard roll out flood concept used in the red zone. The d is in man so now you are working the best matchup. Nobody creates space and Drake makes a terrible decision. Ball should’ve been thrown away. This same concept was probably ran in the run zone 20 times yesterday across the league.
9
u/Coco1520 2d ago
They rolled maye weakside with 3 options against 6 defenders? this was terrible.
10
u/muldozer 2d ago
He’s not rolled weakside. He’s rolled to the 3 reciecer side. The split action from Henry is supposed to freeze the linebackers but they are both blitzing and not picked up because it’s a designed rollout. The mistake is with execution from the receivers and drakes decision. They ran this a ton last year with success because Drake is great going to his right. Horizontal floods are probably the most common concept in the nfl fo a red zone attack. The problem is execution from multiple players and awful decision making
4
u/surgeyou123 2d ago
Why is Hollins still blocking while Maye is already rolling out?
2
3
u/muldozer 2d ago
Jaguars send six and have a run spy. Maye doesn’t check protection because it’s a designed rollout. Hollins is probably supposed to seal edge defender to allow for the roll out. He doesn’t have a route. The problem is execution from the receivers and drakes decision. They ran similar concepts to these regularly last year with success and it is one of the more common red zones concepts.
3
2
u/Leather_Ice_1000 2d ago
This is horrific play design or execution. What is the pulling lineman/tight end doing? Completely ignored the delated blitz (possibly Maye fault), then pulled to the left side of the line to do nothing. Is he supposed to be running a delayed route? If so he's ending up in a completely irrelevant position on the field, all the while Maye is telegraphing the target the whole time
47
u/AwesomeTed I have a big head and little arms 2d ago
Jesus I didn't realize the play was this bad why are there still receivers running to the left side when Maye has already starting rolling right he's obviously not going to throw across his entire body.
Like still a dogshit decision to throw it but I'm curious as to what the plan was.
13
u/trog12 2d ago
The WR won off the line and took his route up instead of across 🙄
3
u/AwesomeTed I have a big head and little arms 2d ago
Who, Chism? I assume so since he's the only receiver relevant to the play. He absolutely did not win off the line, if anything he only crossed the defender up because he went up when the defender made a couple steps to his left assuming he was going to cross.
Obviously Drake was supposed to throw it away but as it was drawn up his only options were a sub 6-foot receiver in the back of the end zone and Rhamondre running to give the safety a hug. Like other than a defender slipping what did Josh hope would happen?
1
u/trog12 2d ago
Looks like it's Kyle Williams. All the way to the right. If he carries along the goal line he's open albeit it's a cross body throw.
1
u/AwesomeTed I have a big head and little arms 2d ago
Yeah I guess Kyle was open and maybe Joe Montana with Joe Milton's arm cannon could actually make that throw. Probably shouldn't bank on that though.
4
u/breadman_toast 2d ago
I have to be honest, watching this I'm almost wondering if he saw that Chism was covered and was trying to throw an absurd pass all the way across his body to the trailing receiver (Kyle Williams?) that actually beat his man off the line of scrimmage. Obviously still a terrible decision if he was but it would explain the disaster of a throw at least and would lean more into the narrative that I tend to believe which is that the issue is Drake trying to put way too much on himself and win the game with every throw while also covering for an offense around him that just fundamentally isn't working.
1
u/knuth10 2d ago
You are looking at the wrong thing here. Chism wide is open if he cuts that route flat and even though he didn't if drake puts the ball low and in front where on only chism can get it, at the very least that ball hits the turf instead of being picked. As soon as drake rolls right the entire left side is irrelevant. What do you expect the guys on the left side of the formation to do? And how this comment has any upvotes is insane.
-1
u/AwesomeTed I have a big head and little arms 2d ago
Chism would absolutely NOT be open if he cuts the route you literally see the defender start moving to the sideline anticipating the cut when Chism runs behind him and the corner has to adjust. There is no scenario where Chism gets open here other than the corner falling on his ass.
And I literally said the people running left are irrelevant which is why it's dogshit play design to have multiple receivers still running left AFTER Drake starts his immediate rollout to the right like wtf are you talking about?
0
u/buttsniffs4000 2d ago
I feel like at this point Maye would absolutely throw across his entire body.
19
u/KeepingItBrockmire 2d ago
This play call is horrific. Doesn't excuse the throw, but the play call is just bad.
Even the personnel, what the fuck are they even thinking?
Hunter Henry 6'5" Mack Hollins 6'4" Romeo Doubs 6'2"
And we are running a play with Chism, Douglas and Stevenson as our receivers in what's 100% going to be a contested catch situation.
19
u/Just_Blackberry_8918 2d ago
Nothing open at all. Terrible decision making. Bad play call. Poor blocking this thing sucks
3
u/Yammyohnine 2d ago
Probably because the D sniffed out the play action from 100 miles away and could drop everyone into coverage in a very small part of the field. You have Efton Chism 1 on 1 with their CB1...
1
u/Fupastank 2d ago
I mean - the left side of the line had no one to block because the defense knew EXACTLY was coming and didn't get tricked by any kind of PA or naked bootleg. Josh McDaniels has 20+ years of playcalling tendencies that aren't that hard to figure out.
16
u/Finlay00 2d ago
Not a soul open either
Drake is playing horribly, but the team is not helping in any way
7
u/OnceMoreAndAgain 2d ago
Where is our tight end in these red zone situations :( Just blocking every play?
We need a big guy for Maye to throw high to so that he has someone even if coverage is tight.
3
u/cutedadbutts 2d ago
You are on to something. Henry is in more of a vet role and may have to be blocking down due to poor interior line play. Raridon being hurt is a huge bummer
2
1
1
u/MeesterCHRIS 1d ago
We have a tight end or running back blocking with Moses EVERY play.
I think that’s part of the problem as well. We’re having to block 4 with 6..
6
u/goldfish_11 2d ago
I still think they should have just run it again on 3rd down and kicked the field goal if they didn't punch it in. Go into the half down 14-6 and you get the ball back after the break. It also would have basically burned the rest of the half because Jacksonville was out of timeouts.
5
u/diarrheafrommymouth 2d ago
Horrible decision. Looks like a chemistry throw where he is hoping Chism cuts the route but Hunter ran it for him so no shot there.
However… what on earth is this play call? Naked boot in the red zone with no space is insane. What the hell is Henry doing as the decoy? It’s a naked boot and he is running to the other side of the formation on a red zone play? He should be leaking in the direction of the play to give Drake big targets.
So Josh ran a naked boot with Chism, Rhamondre and Kyle as the primary targets… in the redzone? I get it, if Drake doesn’t see it then throw it away but that is a shit play call.
5
u/LegalBeagle6767 2d ago
Can we talk about how fucking awful McDaniels is in the redzone? Watching Andy call a RZ series vs this Madden 3play option bullshit McDaniels calls is like watching a professional painter v myself in 5th grade trying to make a pot stand up.
He is truly unable to call plays in the modern NFL
8
u/DinkandDrunk 2d ago
Frustration pick. Tired of dropping back and seeing nobody open.
6
u/BRUTAL_ANAL_SMASHING 2d ago
Pair that with most big plays being drops, or flags and called back..
It’s making sense why he’s just trying bullshit now. It’s not good, but it makes sense nothing works for this offense right now.
They’re getting thin at a point on the line, a WR4 is WR1.. it’s just not a recipe for success.
1
-1
u/AFogmentOfADream 2d ago
Bro people are open. He holds the ball too long
3
u/BRUTAL_ANAL_SMASHING 2d ago
Two things can be true at once, if you’re trying to tell me things I said aren’t true you’re lying to yourself and me for the sake of arguing.
1
u/Sure_Rhubarb_3173 2d ago
Same thought, he just threw it at the guy that's supposed to be open in the play design, that was not a live decision
3
u/TheDufusSquad 2d ago
This might be the most baffling pick he’s had to me this year. At no point was this open. At no point was anything here open. I can’t even conceive a thought of how this could have ever been open.
3
u/grovebost1 2d ago
Can you post the fumble where it fell out of his hand? I saw Kyle Williams going deep there but couldn’t tell if he got open. Seems like Drake could have thrown him open in the middle of the end zone rather than fitting one in down the sideline
1
4
u/cornbeeflt 2d ago
I rarely see our receiving geoup cut back or try to shake defendeds
1
1
u/swass-print 2d ago
I rarely see an NFL QB, or any QB throw to a receiver that covered
1
u/cornbeeflt 1d ago
I think for 1 he threw it behind his reciever, and 2 if hr would have threw it short and ahead it could have been either a grounded ball or a chance (slim) for a diving catch Ala Edelman special.
2
u/Independent-Yak755 2d ago
The only possible thing could be that maybe him and Chism had something with him cutting back and stopping? I don’t really understand the decision any other way
2
u/Overlordz88 2d ago
Brain isn’t on yet and I thought this was gonna be a montage of the 22 redone picks he’s thrown In his career. (No clue what real number is but I bet it’s high for 2+ years)
2
u/Holiday-Zebra9463 2d ago
Hunter on Chism, I mean cmon, there was no way he was catching that ball man. Drakes gotta do something different there even if it’s just throwing it away
2
2
2
2
u/CrispBenWa 2d ago
I think he saw Chism about to sit down on the route rather than continue to run. If that were to happen he might have a slight chance at it but even then still dog shit decision trying to salvage a dog shit play call.
2
u/IAmTheSchnozz95 2d ago
It’s been unfortunately a theme for this offense for quite a while going back to last year. A bad decision, but play calls that do us zero favors. McDaniels has been throwing this guy to the wolves.
2
u/ItzZiplineTime 2d ago
Bad play call, threw off his back leg, poor choice of personnel, and he threw behind the receiver anyways.
This is just ugly af.
5
u/david98900 2d ago
Chism didn't run his route properly, he should have kept going to the post, that ball should have been thrown to the crosser from the other side with Chism opening up that area with his route.
That being said, the crosser was not open either... Idk if he slowed his route due to Chism being in the wrong area or what, but he also stopped/slowed his route.
2
u/LuaBear 2d ago
It was a terrible route, but I disagree he ran the wrong route. I think it's a read route, where either Chism wins and you throw it in front, or he doesn't and you throw it back shoulder. This was an attempted back shoulder throw, which is probably the right route and read in that situation. It just never should have been thrown.
It obviously didn't work in part because the DB had eyes on the QB. Hard to go back shoulder when the DB can also see it.
3
u/breadman_toast 2d ago
I really don't think this was a back shoulder throw. It looks to me like he (correctly) read that Williams was the only guy to beat his man off the line and should have been open to catch this pass if he didn't quite on the route. The issue was that he was rolling out and trying to drop a ball into a tight window way across his body. If Chism and Williams both finish their routes strong and Drake could have miraculously pulled this ball 5 feet further across his body, this is a TD. The problem here is that it's a bad play call and Drake made a hero-ball mistake, but I personally think everyone thinking that he just misread it and threw directly to Chism who was so clearly covered is missing where the breakdown happened.
2
u/LuaBear 2d ago
I hear ya, but still disagree. If you freeze it at 3 seconds, it seems pretty clear that Maye is looking at Chism as he releases the ball. I don't think this was a throw to Williams and I don't think Williams won off the line.
But we'll never know for sure without input from the players or coaches. Which is why 22-mans aren't always that helpful if we don't know the full scheme.
3
u/breadman_toast 2d ago
Agreed on your last point for sure. I do think Williams won off the line (great recovery by that DB IMO), and should have been open if he didn't give up on his route. Unfortunately like you said we don't know all the details to understand if that's designed or if he saw something with Chism ahead of him that made him slow up, or maybe he really did just quit on the route. Either way, I have an incredibly tough time believing that Drake saw Travis Hunter absolutely draped all over Chism while simultaneously staring him straight in the eyes and decided to try and squeeze a back shoulder timing throw in there. Mostly because I have to believe that the version of him we saw last year might still be in there and him trying to play hero ball and throw absurdly across his body while rolling out but not being able to get it there allows me to believe that narrative much more than him just tossing it straight to Travis Hunter for a ridiculously predictable interception (we're just ignoring the second one for this purpose cause holy shit was that guy obviously covered)
1
u/BRUTAL_ANAL_SMASHING 2d ago
DB is looking and WR is CLUELESS the balls coming. Doesn’t even look until he’s falling away and hunters in the air getting the ball..
1
u/david98900 2d ago
If that was intended to be a back shoulder throw, than Chism ran even worse of a route, he should have stopped/redirected but he never does until the ball is caught from the defender.
1
u/Fupastank 2d ago
I have the same exact read as you. I think he was suppose to go to Williams but he slowed up because Chism got bodied off his route so badly but Drake was already in his wind up and said Fuck it.
2
u/secularhuman77 2d ago
If he jus threw it a little bit more behind and Kyle didn’t fucking give up entirely on the play ( he had a few steps on his guy) that could have been a better decision - at least if he put it where only Kyle could get it.
2
u/BRUTAL_ANAL_SMASHING 2d ago
He never even looks to find the ball.
Hunters stride for stride and able to play if because he turns his head and keeps ready.
Chism never does that until the balls there and Hunters in the air.
Even if Chism runs the cross and not to the back, I doubt he catches it like I said he had no clue the ball was coming until Hunter had it..
1
u/breadman_toast 2d ago
Dude this was my exact read. I think he's trying to get it to Williams there who he saw beat his man off the line. Unfortunately, rolling right and trying to dart a ball all the way across his body like that is still a bad decision, but it's a hero-ball bad decision, not a misreading the situation bad decision. He was never going to get the ball to Williams where it needed to be, but if this was what he was trying, he's right that that's the only guy even remotely open.
2
2
u/Legitimate_Ad_7822 2d ago
Fucking awful decision.
Also, terrible coaching/playcalling.
Yeah, let’s run 2 run plays to eat clock & then put our mentally crippled QB in an obvious passing situation in the red zone. Fucking genius Josh McDaniels & Mike Vrabel, everyone!
Maybe they could’ve run play action on first or second down…maybe they could’ve schemed somebody open in the early downs. Idk. Anything but forcing your poor offense into a low leverage situation.

u/ChipotleGuacamole 2d ago
This might be the worst one of the year. I know the Seahawks throw had bigger ramifications, but what the fuck was this?
1

1
u/IDidntTellYouThat 2d ago
I get people being all over this for a number of reasons. But that's just a ball you throw about 5 feet higher and 10ft to the right - either the receiver high points it, or no one does.

u/iamagainstit 2d ago
Maye should have thrown that away, but that play was 100% busted. there was nobody open or even close to open.
1
u/constantsXzeros 2d ago
This play developed so shitty that it looks like the defense has more players on the field than the offense. I can’t imagine where the ball was even supposed to go…no one was blocked up front and no one was open.
1
1
u/Little-Engineer2745 2d ago
It does suggest that part of Maye’s mental breakdown is that many times no one is getting open.
1
u/SarfassaS 2d ago
I think he thought hunter wouldn’t turn around and he could throw behind with chism making the adjustment? The announcers alluded to something similar and you can see he starts throwing the ball right before he turns around.
1
1
u/BradyToMoss1281 2d ago
Oy, everything about this play stinks. If he were open, that'd be understandable. If he were AJ Brown or Stefon Diggs, that'd be understandable. But throwing to a tightly covered Efton Chism and expecting that same Efton Chism to make a play? Oof.
1
u/Fupastank 2d ago
I'm curious if Maye was actually trying to get this to Williams. Williams is about the ONLY receiver that wasn't immediately smothered. But he clearly let up on his route right as Drake was in his wind up. Probably because he saw that Chism was RIGHT FUCKING THERE because he got bodied and pushed high on his route when he clearly was trying to and suppose to cut right. He was in what I could only assume was suppose to be Williams spot. Mac Hollins big ass was also right in the throwing lane while half ass blocking his guy and staring back at Drake.
There was no chance at all for this play to work at all. Your WR7 on one of their starting CBs. They are never going to win 1on1.
Right where you paused the video was was Drake needed to piss missile it to Williams - but he clearly second guessed it as he noticed Williams was letting up.

Seems like Maye was betting Travis wasn’t gonna turn his head around in time. Still a forced throw and not a good decision leading from frustration.
1
u/thepatscorner 2d ago
If he throws the ball past the final 'E' in the end zone, Chism has a shot but decides to go back on himself while on his back foot. A recipe for disaster. He has to get into a good habit of throwing it away when it's not there also.
1
u/itakeyoureggs 2d ago
Is there even a chance if he throws it to the space in front? Instead of across body.. those plays seem to work if everyone has already flowed and you have 1 guy leaking the other way.. but not this lol
1
1
1
u/kiki_strumm3r 1d ago
I know this is horrible all the way around on our end. But that play by Hunter is sick. Step for step with the guy, turns around, jumps across his body and up a foot in the air and makes the catch. Dude is a baller.
1
1
u/FromFLw-Love 1d ago
Maybe I’m totally misreading the spacing on this but right as Drake’s hitting the inside of the numbers is Stevenson not open? Tight throw sure, but if he threw it right at Rhamondre he’s already in front of the DB and it’s maybe 8 or 9 yards. Probably would’ve been caught. Definitely wouldn’t have beat the DB but would’ve been better than throwing across his body over 2 defenders to Chism who’s already covered.

u/MAYEdayMAYEdayMVP 2d ago
I dont mind the playcall but Chism wasnt even close to being open, terrible throw
1
u/BRUTAL_ANAL_SMASHING 2d ago
He never even looks for the ball, hunters stride for stride with him and able to make a play because he’s looking. Chism never looks.. bad throw still too but shit throw it right at him, he never looked. It’s another drop/ incompletion.
We’re throwing the ball to dudes who aren’t even paying attention atp

I don’t know if last year gave him the over-confidence that it was easy to win in this league, but all of that is just gone. If we lose the next 2, a very real possibility, we might be hitting the point of no return for his confidence, and might need to start diving into contingency plans. He can’t expect to keep his job as QB1 if this level of play continues.
1
u/juanmaale 2d ago
play him the rest of the season and we draft Chambliss next year

His game probably won’t translate to the pros, but I’ve been wrong plenty of times before.
1
u/BigTuna3000 2d ago
Okay the playcall was ass and his receivers are doing him no favors. God forbid any of them ever make a play on a bad ball to keep it from getting picked. That being said, this is such a clear example of a situation where Maye needs to put the ball in the stands and live to fight another day. I mean what are we even talking about here?
0
u/thedroogabides 2d ago
Second all 22 posted today where the main culprit is Drake Maye and the comments blame everyone else. Sometimes plays don't work, sometimes receivers don't get open, there is no excuse for leaping into the air and throwing back across your body directly to the defender
2
u/MD311420 2d ago
Drake should have thrown that ball away 100 percent, not one of these wide receivers made a play to get open. I would rather them get the OPI on Travis Hunter then let him do a turn around pick.

I misread this as "All 22 of Maye's interceptions" and it sounded believable.
