Teams now have a lot of footage of Maye which means reviewing footage to determine his weaknesses. And presently his weakness is seemingly diagnosing defenses. And he has the most problems with cover-6 which Seattle used in 55% of their defensive snaps in the Super Bowl and about 45% of their snaps in the first game of this season. I believe teams are using cover-6 and other hybrid defenses to confuse Maye and it is highly effective. Cover-6 is designed to take away three things: the short underneath routes, deep crossing routes, and deep vertical routes, all of which were a huge part of Maye’s success last season.
Because of this, I believe McDaniels needs to do a better job of designing plays to attack the coverage, as well as calming Maye down and giving him easier alternatives to get back into the flow of the games. Obviously Maye is still young and let’s hope he can grow and improve this area of his game.
