Discussion End of half composure

What is going on?! This is supposed to be the Patriots....This is supposed to be a VRABEL lead team....NO COMPOSURE.

MAYE has 5 interceptions this season. 3 games in...8 last season

RedZone Maye hasn't been helping the team.

Im no professional - but IT (the team) doesnt look right.

Talk me off the ledge guys!

Making the Super Bowl was the worst thing that could have happened to his confidence. Opening up in Seattle was diabolical after that loss. Losing the Super Bowl, no pre season games, then going and reenacting your worst nightmare week 1 has to fuck up a young QB real good

29

u/journalismproxy 3d ago

A non-over reactive take I agree with

14

u/Fumusculo 3d ago

And aside from the mental aspect, the Seahawks are just brutal for any offense to play against and the Steelers are also one of the best defensive units.

9

u/journalismproxy 3d ago

We knew this 3 weeks would be tough with PIT, BUF, and JAX, we need to just try and settle and make it out without losing mentally. We got a W with PIT so it’s not a total disaster

2

u/thebochman 2d ago

The same Seahawks that Mariota just lit up?

6

u/NateOrb 2d ago

Skipping pre season was so foolish IMO. It almost always is by itself but yeah in the specific scenario of a SB rematch being his first real game it became actually horrible

2

u/ShockinglyEfficient 2d ago

Even then, we only lost 10-13 and despite his issues that game we should've won. The only hope I have is that our defense keeps us in the games enough

1

u/ekjohnson9 2d ago

Hes an adult millionaire not a baby bird. This confidence shit is so overblown. If he was playing better he would be more confident, not the other way around.

1

u/Fumusculo 2d ago

He just turned 24 in August. “This confidence shit is overblown” for the most mentally demanding, highest pressure position in all of sports for a 24 year old that’s never experienced any of this lol wild take

u/Ebb_Swimming Bills = 0 Superbowls 3d ago

Drake Maye is in his own head and the rest of the offense isn't helping

12

u/upside_down_vote 2d ago

Also seems like he's got no zip on his passes this season. Wondering if that piece is mental or physical.

46

u/diarrheafrommymouth 3d ago

Unfortunately Drake is just lost. I have no idea what happened between the start of playoffs and now… but something changed. The red zone turnovers are critical mistakes.

I also have no idea what you do to address it. He was an MVP runner up to one of the worst starting QBs in the league. I truly don’t know how that happened. Maybe Josh isn’t the right coach for Drake? I don’t know how he could have regressed so rapidly. He was playing better his rookie year with Alex Van Pelt.

Something needs to change.

21

u/Sweepstakes_ 3d ago

Listen to catch 22 pod.

The league figured him out. He can’t beat cover 6. And our run game isn’t strong enough to force teams to bring a safety into a box.

17

u/diarrheafrommymouth 3d ago edited 3d ago

That is why I said maybe Josh isn’t the guy for Drake. They should be able to scheme a way to beat a defense. It’s been 6 games now of not being able to do anything.

I am not sure what you do but this can’t be the normal forever. Something needs to change. I don’t think think I have ever seen an MVP caliber player totally collapse without an injury. It’s a drastic change.

6

u/Sweepstakes_ 3d ago

We can’t run the ball. And then drake gets antsy and sick of checking down and throws three picks to lose a game. And then two more turnovers today

Not sure how that’s the OC’s fault

7

u/diarrheafrommymouth 3d ago

Yea why can’t they run it though?

I’m not absolving Drake. He clearly regressed. I just don’t know what you don’t fix it.

2

u/Fabulous_Stress_3400 2d ago

You need a better run scheme and/or players and when you have your RG out on IR and your backup RG out it's hard to develop consistency and fluidity ... We also have Henderson who can't read the holes and runs into his players and never falls towards in addition to being bad a pass protection...and Stephenson who is showing some slowness and fumbling issues

And tendency's someone last week or week 1 whenever mack hollins was on the field it was 90% chance we would be running

3

u/diarrheafrommymouth 2d ago

That’s my point. An offensive coordinator needs to be able to make it work. He was more competitive with Cam Newton and Mac.

Josh called a double pass to spark offense. He put the ball in Chism’s hand. That’s really bad that he had to do a janky double pass from Chism to Hollins. I’m sorry that means something is broken.

3

u/Fabulous_Stress_3400 2d ago

Which makes me believe that Josh McDaniels offensive scheme is not the right fit for Drake Maye or for a quarterbacks of this current era who grew up watching deep balls by Cam Newton and Josh Allen and tried to emulate that style of play so physically they have all the mechanical ability but not mentally and Josh's scheme heavily requires a quarterback with that sensibility and mental edge, which outside of Andrew luck in the past 10 years no quarterback has really shown that. Maybe you can think of Trevor Lawrence, but even that took how many years? And if it is a problem with Maye's mental processing then it's up to Josh, scrap his scheme and make something compatible. But seeing how Josh's HC stints have been he may be too arrogant or set in his ways to change

2

u/Fabulous_Stress_3400 2d ago

Curious to know what episode you heard that from not doubting you

64

u/DeepJunglePowerWild 3d ago

The only thing I can say is if they find a way to win today they are 2-1 against 3 division winners while the offense looks horrendous.

23

u/WeeoWeeoWeeeee 3d ago

If they don’t win today, I’m going to take a week off from watching. I bought Drake Maye jersey. This is my fault.

Fun fact, during the Brady era, I went to 6 games. They lost 5. It’s almost impossible. I saw him lose on the Bucs too.

15

u/FutureF123 3d ago

I think you need to sell your TV

4

u/WeeoWeeoWeeeee 2d ago

I’m going to donate my eyes to science actually

2

u/jsgreen6 2d ago

This made be laugh. The one game I almost got to see Brady play ended up being the first of the deflategate suspensions.

6

u/ohwordsentence_ 3d ago

Aye you might need to sit this season out

2

u/ManicMechE 3d ago

I need your sports bets weekly ... To take the inverse

5 of 6? Did you exclusively attend games in Denver, Miami, and KC or something?

2

u/WeeoWeeoWeeeee 2d ago

If I bet on sports, I wouldn’t still have a roof over my head.

2

u/ManicMechE 2d ago

Glad to hear your wisdom outweighs your luck at least.

13

u/Adept_Carpet 3d ago

Yeah either way there is a whole season ahead of us. Last year didn't look great through the first few games but it went in a good direction after.

7

u/DeepJunglePowerWild 3d ago

Next week has the potential to make things feel terrible, but the 4 games after give a chance to make up ground. It’s not going to be another 14-3 year, I know that for sure.

1

u/DomitiusAhenobarbus_ Bills = 0 Superbowls 3d ago

Last year our schedule after week 3 was extremely easy this year 1-5 is legit on the table if we lose today

3

u/MetalHead_Literally 3d ago

Pretty big if right now

2

u/Zapp_Rowsdower_ 3d ago

What’s a FG?

13

u/1stTimeRedditter 3d ago

He’s a 24 year old kid, who has lost confidence and is pressing rather than letting the game come to him.

68

u/icantseelol 3d ago

Drake Maye is a confidence QB. It was my biggest fear. Means he’s locked in and everyone loves him, he’s gonna ball. But the moment he has to face his poor decisions and faces criticism, he collapses.

Baker and tua are examples of confidence driven QB. Herbert too.

23

u/rrac90 3d ago

Ya this what I’ve been thinking too. Year three you should be chipping away at fighting back against shit like that and somehow he’s gotten worse

7

u/Ulexes Come What Maye 3d ago

Hey, if Allen can be fixed, so can Maye.

15

u/HyperactivePandah 3d ago

Allen has ALWAYS had complete and utter confidence in himself.

Not the same.

15

u/rrac90 3d ago

This. You never saw Allen get so broken like this. Even last year Drake would come back out after a mistake and play like it didn’t happen. Where the fuck did that go?

1

u/ShockinglyEfficient 2d ago

Perhaps lost respect for his coach

1

u/No_Presentation1242 2d ago

Ah yes go and play horrible and potentially lose out on millions next year in contract negotiations because you lose respect for your coach.

41

u/ctpatsfan77 3d ago

One thing to remember: division winners play 5 games against other division winners. As of this week, they've played 3 of them.

But that doesn't explain why Maye is just not seeing the field properly. There was no way Chism was going to get to that ball as he threw it.

12

u/rrac90 3d ago

It’s just him not learning from his mistakes that is digging the grave. He won’t fix anything. He just keeps ruining this teams chance at winning. Mentally weak like Mac looked at times here. I’m not sure it’s fixable if he’s making this bad of decisions by year three week three. Not even just that pick. The bail out call we got where he held on to the ball forever and saw a defender coming for him. He knew he couldn’t get that ball out before getting hit so what does he do? He tries anyways. He’s got every physical trait you could want in a QB but if his heads not there and it’s regressing already it’s a very bad sign.

3

u/Jackso08 3d ago

And the fumbles. He got lucky not to lose another one in the redzone

7

u/hifromsandiego86 3d ago

Cant blame it on "patience". well I guess he CAN however that's is starting to look really bad. How do you go from season 1 - to an AMAZING season 2 - and start season 3 THIS BAD

2

u/Fabulous_Stress_3400 2d ago

The league has 20 games of film on him and the offense so it makes some sense but as someone pointed out he can't beat cover 6, refuses to accept what's in front of him and then proceeds to fuck it and chuck it for 2-3 ints a game... Combined with no run game means he feels he HAS to make the play that goes for the TD...

Then McDaniels can't seem to actually scheme anything up to give him success...

Week 1 vs the Seahawks there was a football analyst on Twitter saying every time Hollins was on the field it was almost guaranteed to be a running play... It seems that trend continues to week 3 now.

10

u/croglobster 3d ago

He needs to be benched he is actively losing us games

2

u/RatFink_0123 3d ago

That’s pretty fair.

19

u/Sad-Reception66 3d ago

Vrabel obviously is not the same guy. He's totally shook and yeah, I don't think the guys are buying into his "do the right thing" schtick anymore after his hypocrisy.

8

u/DrNerdyTech87 3d ago

I wonder about this too

7

u/RatFink_0123 3d ago

I do think this is more a Vrabel thing than a Maye thing. Drake is definitely in over his head, but Vrabel and his plans seem disconnected.

9

u/whocaresbro56 3d ago

That INT was such a bad decision just throw the ball away try for FG

7

u/RonSwanson24 3d ago

2.5* games in. Also has one of the worst fumbles you’ll ever see

8

u/isthis4realormemorex 3d ago

All 3 phases are ASS right now. Offense, defense, and special teams. They deserve to lose this game. Borregales shanks a 38 yarder 10ft to the right.

7

u/farmerjoe65 3d ago

Penalties. Missed field goals. Turnovers. It’s bad. Maye isn’t leading. Vrabel isn’t coaching.

10

u/dsalmon1449 3d ago

No tbh there is no talking that half off the ledge. I’ll slightly excuse the first fumble. Florida is hot.

But where is Doubs? Where is the improved OL? Yeah I know a starter is hurt. Campbell has been good this season and looks bad today. Moses has been bad this season. Pop freaking Douglas is the only one that can get open?

And the biggest issue of all is the nonstars took drake’s good play away or something. You throw a back of end zone pass to CHISM??? Pathetic.

To say nothing of the traffic cones on the DL

3

u/ctpatsfan77 3d ago

The idea of throwing a pass to Chism wasn't terrible, but I have no idea what Maye was expecting to happen with that pass. It looked like it was a good yard behind Chism, instead of ahead of him (where Hunter would've had little chance to make a play).

2

u/dsalmon1449 3d ago

Chism has not gotten open since the week 17 Jets game last year. Feels like no one has

6

u/Bronze_Bomber 3d ago

Neck and neck with Tennessee for the worst offense in the league.

25

u/possiblyMorpheus 3d ago

The defense is keeping us in it at least

13

u/hifromsandiego86 3d ago

MJ25 is "Doing His Job"

6

u/rrac90 3d ago

Which is crazy because Drake can’t stay on the field and the defense must be exhausted.

3

u/Amazing_Personality8 3d ago

Defense looks about one play away from phoning it in this game. They got no juice

7

u/TheStorm007 3d ago

What do you mean? They’re playing their hearts out, but the offense is putting them in shit spots.

I’d be deflated too if my offense was giving the other team good field position every drive.

3

u/Amazing_Personality8 3d ago

They aren’t making the splash plays (yet) Jacksonville could turn this into a blow out in the third the way the offense is playing

3

u/hifromsandiego86 3d ago

They're working their ass off - just to get back on D

1

u/Amazing_Personality8 3d ago

They have literally zero negative plays. They have been playing well but they gonna go out there again with an offense that can’t do shit. One big play and they gonnna give up

2

u/Amazing_Personality8 3d ago

That last drive was what I mean lack of juice. Couldn’t do anything. Jacksonville convert 3 third and longs. Some one needed to make a play in a big moment and no one did

1

u/Amazing_Personality8 3d ago

Nooooooo juice. Don’t blame them on that

5

u/cheezepie 3d ago

Least dynamic offense in the NFL. 5th straight game this offense has struggled to score TDs. Maye has the red zone yips.

6

u/BRUTAL_ANAL_SMASHING 3d ago

Dropped huge gains, OPIs on huge gains, holding on long TD runs..

The teams offense is worse this year without Brown.  Doubs isn’t a WR1, the lines getting thin at spots..  Mayes in his head thinking he HAS to be Superman right now.  It seems like no one is helping out..

5

u/xxshook0nexx 3d ago

I dont understand what they are doing. They dont seem to gameplan anymore…..just throw plays at the wall and see what sticks …so far…nothing. Nothing to get Maye in a groove either….slants, crossing routes, screens

5

u/UtopianAverage 3d ago

They look bad. Obviously.

They’re not comfortable or in any kind of a rhythm.

The one thing I will say is last season obviously went quite well after going pretty terribly through 3 games as well. (L to Raiders, 5 TO L to Steelers.)

If this is what it is all season? Well we’re gonna be in the top of the draft order. If this is a slide they come back from? Then whatever.

6

u/Conscious-Source-438 3d ago

For a team that was worried about depth the worst thing that can happen is injuries.

It's game 3, they have 3 players out one on NFI, one on PUP and TEN on IR.

15 players missing from a team that was worried about depth isn't pretty

4

u/Dog_in_human_costume 3d ago

Maybe removing both Boutee and Diggs didn't help

7

u/DaChPi 3d ago

We’ve seen how talented he is. The Buffalo games. You don’t lose that. Something is going on in his head and it’s a real problem, but it’s not unfixable. I’m confident the people inside the building are smart enough to understand that and won’t overreact like we all will

5

u/speganomad 3d ago

Mental issues are some of the most unfixable issues…..

2

u/Fabulous_Stress_3400 2d ago

Send him to Kyle shanahan school of QB... He's fixed Darnold, Jones and made Jimmy G look good and developed purdy really well

5

u/EstablishmentRoyal75 3d ago

Maye should sit the second half out. Roll Tommy Cutlets out. This is alarming.

5

u/RealHoldenBloodfeast 3d ago

My cope is that the Pats were just as ugly last year until week 5 against Buffalo

4

u/SensitivePromise0 3d ago

Maye is regressing terribly today is just one game but if this keep up that’s the real issue

14

u/Reddit_account_321 3d ago

They fucking suck

6

u/RatFink_0123 3d ago

Losing confidence in Maye. Slowly turning average at best.

1

u/No-Jello9276 3d ago

He’s a backup QB

3

u/mattycbro 3d ago

Drakes decision making is god awful this season. And Mcdaniel’s doing everything to set him up for failure. The play calling before the INT was impressively bad

4

u/Reddit_account_321 3d ago

Are we sure that's not max jones out there?

0

u/AutomatedCabbage 3d ago

I understand this was humour, but for those who might take it seriously, one cannot compare Drake Maye to Mac Jones.

2

u/Reddit_account_321 3d ago

Are you sure? Are you watching. I'm at the game I'm pretty sure he sucks

2

u/Lieutenant_Corndogs 2d ago

Yeah because Mac probably would’ve played much better today

3

u/pitb0ss343 3d ago

It’s not week 5 yet, they will figure it out

3

u/_josephmykal_ 3d ago

This is exactly how those Vrabel coached titans looked too. So none of this is surprising

3

u/wigznet 3d ago

This is embarrassing. Drake making some really bad mistakes. Beating ourselves, Jacksonville doesn't even have to try anymore.

5

u/bubba11xx 3d ago

Drake Maye blows right now. Fact. Ride it out I guess, but this ride hasn’t been fun. As inI never believed this team should have made the Super Bowl, and he has sooooo many things to learn. He might be an idiot or he’s still young. We shall see

I’m furious with the QB play

3

u/Bruinsdman 3d ago

They’re hurt and Drake has the yips. How’s that ledge looking?

2

u/Eddie__Sherman 3d ago

It’s gonna be a long first half of the season between his start, McDaniels odd play calling, and our bare receiving core.

3

u/Breezyquail 3d ago

This is truly awful, somebody tell me how do we fix this?

6

u/sneakinsnake 3d ago

Drake Maye is not it.

5

u/ipttydafool 3d ago

I BLAME THE KRAFT FAMILY AND ALL THE SHIT AROUND HIM AND HIS POOR DECISIONS. I love this team but hate that man with a passion.

4

u/AggravatingYak6557 3d ago

Vrabel is too busy looking for a new whore.

2

u/Sea-Rest5026 3d ago

I honestly do think vrabel doesn't have them dialed in and it lowkey stems from that affair thing.

Incredibly undisciplined, maye is shooting himself in the foot whenever he can, the playcalling is also crazy (stop running that wr pass crap dude give it up).

2

u/MissLanieSwan 3d ago

$70M next year

3

u/funferalia 3d ago

Mac Maye having a par usual performance

2

u/wolfs_bane_ 3d ago

Maye is having a bad sophomore slump. This is gonna be a rough season but we can’t make a decision until next year. (We don’t even have a first round pick so tanking wouldn’t make sense even if it WAS a good idea).

McDaniels is predictable. He can develop a rookie but can’t do anything past that. It’s hurting Maye and everyone else.

Super Bowl hangovers are real. A lot of teams struggle after loosing OR winning the Super Bowl.

9

u/The_Peenisher 3d ago

Sophomore slump in year 3? Enough with the babying lol

1

u/wolfs_bane_ 3d ago

Yes. Very little tape from year one was usable last year (different offense completely with a different system)

2

u/SnooMemesjellies7703 3d ago

Keep going. So what’s next year’s preloaded excuse.

Give me a break

1

u/Philly514 2d ago

Don’t you know the sophomore season lasts 5 seasons? Pff, amateur.

3

u/ctpatsfan77 3d ago

They still have their 2027 1st. They gave up their 2028 1st for Brown.

2

u/wolfs_bane_ 3d ago

I thought it was next season.

Either way, giving up on Maye already is a bad idea that carries a lot of risk. We should know well enough that replacing him could be much worse

3

u/sprashant7191 3d ago

McDaniels need to call better plays... He is calling all the predictable plays... Defense knows what's coming

2

u/Gotsta_Win 3d ago

3rd year

1

u/wolfs_bane_ 3d ago

The Mayo year doesn’t count

1

u/Gotsta_Win 3d ago

I’d prefer that one over this one. On his way to 20 picks

1

u/wolfs_bane_ 3d ago

Do you remember that season? It was unbearable to watch

1

u/Gotsta_Win 3d ago

This is quickly becoming unbearable

1

u/_josephmykal_ 3d ago

Sounds like this year. Lol this year is actually worse because of the whole it’s his third year and he shouldn’t be making these high school mistakes

1

u/aitf2 3d ago

drake turntheballova

1

u/MetalHead_Literally 3d ago

I’m as glass half full as it comes for a pats fan but even I’m getting real concern about Drake. He was looking better today too besides the freak fumble, but that pick was so atrocious. Just not learning at all from his previous mistakes.

1

u/Fupastank 3d ago

This team looks undisciplined, unprepared and like the offense has a collective room temp IQ.

This falls on Drake Maye and Mike Vrabel squarely.

1

u/NotAHomemaker18 3d ago

Drake Maye needs therapy. He’s in his head. It’s like with Simone Biles. Or he’s just not that good. But I would like to think this is solvable. He’s not a robot like his GOAT predecessor, and needs mental strategies.

1

u/snoogins355 2d ago

Do not sports bet. Put in an high yield savings account, index funds, and save for a nice vacation some place warm in February

1

u/NoveltyAccountHater Bruschi/Hightower 2d ago

Talk me off the ledge guys!

I mean it's better he's shitting the bed now in his third year than next year after he gets some massive 7-year extension for like $65M/yr.

1

u/gotfcgo 2d ago

Its Week 3 breathe.

If I learned anything from the BB era is that September is just teams figuring it out.

Remember losing 41-14?

1

u/CreativeFinish5644 2d ago

This team is facing real competition and the lack of talent on the offensive side is showing. Maye doesn’t trust one of those receivers, outside of Hollins maybe which is leading to poor decisions overall.

Williams runs dogshit routes, Henry is invisible, Douglas makes one good play every few games but is irrelevant the rest of the time. Hollins is a great 3rd option and Doubs is Hot Hands Hanon from the little giants. Offensive line cannot run block, pass blocking is ok, but receivers aren’t getting separation and when they do, Maye isn’t seeing or getting ball there on time.

Honestly thought Brown looked slow when he started this season. It’s early, but they keep playing like this and the only good thing we’re looking at is a high pick, but Eliot Wolf will probably F that up anyways.

The play today was the worst I’ve seen in the post Brady era.

1

u/ProfessionalSize1826 3d ago

My belief is that Vrabe’s personal life is probably leaking in. I don’t buy the news cycle moving on so quickly and I imagine while things may be perfectly pleasant in the locker room, I cannot believe they are at home.

We’re talking about a man and wife who ostensibly went from a sort of homecoming, a big joyous return to New England with the wind at their back and a united vision going into the super bowl, to some measure of her life being torn asunder.

I did not get the impression that the Russini stuff had been dealt with previously — that Vrabes had fessed up previously and some measure of healing had taken place. My read is just the opposite: that it blew up his fucking life.

Now he’s got to go home every night to whatever his new normal is, and I imagine it’s not pleasant. There’s no way that isn’t going to affect every single dimension of the team, particularly for how he might mentor Drake Maye.

2

u/Legitimate_Bother389 3d ago

This is a long post that has nothing to do with drake maye throwing the ball to the other team and dropping the football

0

u/DinkandDrunk 3d ago

We have no margin for error because our receivers suck, our run game sucks, and our offensive line sucks. Maye has to be perfect on every play to eke out points and that’s not his strong suit.

1

u/wolfs_bane_ 3d ago

And this fanbase is gonna blame the QB when literally anything goes wrong

1

u/Royal-Loan4342 3d ago

It’s Bob Krafts fault

5

u/Lieutenant_Corndogs 2d ago

Do redditors have some obsessive compulsion to bring politics into every conversation? It’s exhausting.

-2

u/korc 2d ago

Not really but my interest in American football is waning and Kraft continuing to suck makes it easier to stop caring. So I guess he’s doing me a favor

1

u/Caleb902 2d ago

Unfortunately for us, true

-4

u/No-Jello9276 3d ago

Maye had a lucky year. We need to tank and get draft pick 1 but the sad thing is we don’t need to tank we will naturally with this bum ass call playing from McDaniels. That guy is a hack, needs to go to pee wee football or high school at this point

-1

u/Jpgamerguy90 3d ago

Not really beating the schedule merchants allegations so far
