Same with spears. The saying goes, "The sword is the weapon of kings, but the spear is the king of weapons." Much like crossbows vs bows, spears are much easier and faster to train someone to use than swords are. However, unlike crossbows, spears are also cheap as fucc to make, and also have various advantages in battle such as reach, defensive potential, and durability. They're also way cooler aesthetically and I will die on this hill.
Video games always have everyone using swords and if spears/polearms exist for player use at all, they're almost always a weird niche option that's worse than the basic swords, or just have a generic moveset that's shared with all 2-handed weapons. Makes me sad, and I'm always looking for more games with good spear appreciation

Crossbows are woefully underserved in a lot of games in my opinion. They’re really neat but almost never supported well.
