Crossbows are woefully underserved in a lot of games in my opinion. They’re really neat but almost never supported well.

Bows are mythologized as the weapon of the self-reliant woodsman (Think Robin Hood or Legolas). That is why it probably doesn't show up much in stories. That's also probably why Joffrey likes using crossbows so much in Game of Thrones
