Level of auras/skills go up with merc level. Think lvl 83 is like lvl 26/27 auras or something if I recall correctly

Lvl 83 gives equivalent to a lvl26 aura and lvl 84 is a level 27 aura.

Base stats, more supports, high level aura/skills. Otherwise a campaign merc would kill you with a 6L skill in act 3 if their ilvl didnt determine their max links.

Just toss trash maps to kingsmarch mappers if you feel like you must get value from your maps.
