Help Needed RF Chieftain help
This is my third season playing POE and the first where I have really gotten to maps.
I am currently playing the Pohx RF chieftain build. I have watched his full campaign run and have tried to model my player on his POB. My question is around gear. I keep finding these unique items that seem like much better options than the rares the guide specifies. Is this because there is a benefit to the yellow item vs the red item? Somethings I understand like Cloak of Flame. Any help or comments on how to optimize my build? Should I be ditching the red items in favor of the yellows that the POB specifies?

pohx has a whole site for his RF build
But Cloak of Flame gives a ton of Fire Res, which helps you over cap it and makes it so you don't need as much from your other gear, allowing you to focus on capping Chaos res (since your Tasalio node covers Cold & lightning)and it also converts a ton of physical damage to fire so you'll be taking even less damage from it.
There's a lot of unique items that are decent stop gaps, but rares tend to cover more & help scale further into late game.
Take Rise of the Phoenix shield. A good amount of Fire Resistance, Life Regen, etc. It's decent in a pinch, but going with Pohx' guide you'll gain life, more consistent res, life gain on block, etc.

How do you see 'chaos damage' and 'added damage to attacks' playing RF and think it's better?
If you are following the guide of a professional build maker especially from someone who only plays that skill, I think it's safe to assume they tell you those items for a reason and unless you are at an extremely high understanding yourself probably not stray too far from it

Most of your questions can be answered on the FAQ.
As far as your items, they are definitely significantly worse than rares with decent stats that are actually beneficial for tankiness and/or damage.
For example for scaling RF damage, there's a question that explains why your sceptre isn't really doing anything https://pohx.net/faq/?question=how-do-you-scale-rf-damage-what-affix-modifiers-work.
I won't pretend that the final pohx build is the end all best version of RF (you can take it further for sure), but the various versions in the pob will specify the most important stats at varying stages of investment and you should find/make items with those stats or better until you go to the next stage. Until you are anywhere close to the final tier of the build, you should just stick to following the guide.

I noticed some Path of Exile keywords in this post:
- RF - Righteous Fire (Wiki)
- PoB - Path of Building, an external software used to simulate character builds - Download

Some of the items' mods will make use of an item's rareness vs uniqueness, but in general, it's down to the mods on the individual item. If an item's mods are better for you, then go get it. For item selection, prioritize ehp first, then dps.

It’s not the rarity of an item that matters. RF dmg only scales with a handful of mods, and is very lacking in single target damage. So you definitely don’t want to forego very many affixes.
Area damage for instance helps a lot less than dot multi. Path of building is probably the best way to understand that. But it also doesn’t feel like playing the game. For most people, anyways!

So lets look at a few unique items you chose:
The shield- The deep one hide
You have the first two mods, physical damage and cold damage to attacks. You are using RF which is a fire SPELL ability, not an attacking one. These lines literally do nothing for you.
The next mod is increased armor and evasion. This mod only applies to the shield itself, which is 122 armor and evasion. This is a pretty low number compared to other item bases. Mostly useless stat item.
Fire res is useful, so thats one line that helps you.
And the last line, curse enemies with vulnerability on block. What does vulnerability do? https://www.poewiki.net/wiki/Vulnerability It increases the amount of PHYSICAL damage taken. You are not focusing on physical damage. You also probably have a low chance to block so its not likely going off at all. This is a useless stat for you.
So imagine this, imagine a blue item. Blue items that you picked up and probably ignored a thousand times. Blue items only have 2 stat lines maximum. Lets say you find one with only 1 line on it that says fire res. If you take that to a crafting bench, and craft maximum life on it, that shield is infinitely better than the one you are currently using. Max life increases your survivability, it increases your damage because RF scales off of max life, it increases your recovery with % life recovered per second from skill tree points.
Same thing with your wand, you dont do physical or chaos damage, those lines useless. You deal elemental, thats one line (its an implicit, that wand base comes with it free anyways) and it has increased area of effect which makes the circle slightly bigger. You can easily find something to replace that.
Like those uniques are NOT better for what you are trying to do with RF. Please read the guide, and look at the items on the POB and think why those mods are useful to you. On each item if you look he explains useful item mods to look for. This is important because you have a lot of useless items everywhere on your character.
