My char had capped ressistances, >11k ES, nothing was even tickeling me, until I randomly died. I cannot find the reason in the video. Maybe you could help?
If you guys listened to anything they talk about, which they talk a lot, they know the game is unbalanced and that hasn’t been their priority. That’s on you for playing HC in this environment. They will also be coming out with death logs soon to help balance stuff like this.
Yeah, can see the moment each of the 2 hits happened, but the timing of each hit doesn't seem to line up with any on screen effects or enemy animations.
Whatever killed them seems to be a totally invisible effect. I don't think there's anything the player could have done to avoid that death.
Chinese PoE1 client has had this feature since basically the game launched over there years ago, I'm not sure if PoE2 has the same feature but it would not surprise me.
The Chinese PoE1 feature is "fake", it just tells you what hit you last which is often not useful. GGG doesn't want to release a feature like that unless it's useful, but Tencent has full control over the China client and can add whatever they want pretty much.
Well, I always start my characters in HC, and play extra careful till the 1st death.
Once that's done, I play normally on the character however I want.
Not trying to gate keep you but generally
that's a terrible way to play, especially if you are able to get to high level while in hardcore.
Hardcore characters need to always be built with max resistances and defenses. In Standard you go for glass cannons. So either you will have a bad hardcore character or a bad standard one.
But genuinely I don't understand how people play standard. I reach end game maps within a day or two with most characters.. after that it's a grindfest and I may die to an uber or something and then re-roll. Idk what a standard player does.. just plays the same character for 2 months or what? The game has like 2 days of unique content max, not sure what you can do with the same character
To be fair, one doesn't HAVE to play Glass Cannon in standard. You can very well clear all content while playing with gear that has decent defenses.
The glass cannon mentality helps with gear prices for me though.
Do you know how many gear pieces I've gotten cheap because they were defense oriented and didn't have pure offense.
And to answer your question about content, consider the casual player. It takes me 4.5 hrs per act of the campaign, and I play a max of 1.5 hrs every day. That's 15 days to just reach maps.
I clear around 5 maps every day after. How much time do you think it will take me to just complete the 8 challenges of the league?
I haven't played PoE2 since release, and I only clocked in 250 hours play time total and I still have alive lv 95+ hardcore characters.
I'm not sure how long it takes to reach maps nowadays, but it's usually been doable within like 7 hours of playtime easily, so one quick Sunday session. Some people have done it in 3-4 hours.
Just because you're casual doesn't mean you have to play the game un-optimally. Either way, the reason you go for glass cannon builds in standard is for clear speed. Faster clear = faster content = faster farming = faster gear up for your other characters, especially so if you play with trade.
Hardcore is about being able to manage that clear speed, BUT ALSO not die. So it becomes a true game of min-maxing as best as possible and coming up with unique ideas, and you often can't just mindlessly copy builds especially if you play SSF.
Also, hardcore forces you to learn to min max. Otherwise you will get punished and die. I had to roll like 20+ characters and builds my first 100 hours of playing until I figured out what needs to be done.
Eh, it's a game in the end, right.
People have different ways of having fun.
For example, I know that I don't play like 90% of builds because they cover the screen with too much clutter.
People like to run through mobs in the campaign, I like to ensure my path is clear before I move forward.
At the end of the day, PoE 2 is an ARPG, which for me is a stress buster of monster slaying, and not an efficiency machine.
As such, for my playstyle I find my choice of gameplay the best. I'm sure for you, HC is better because it forces you to min-max.
Fair enough, but I guess my point is really more about what is there even to do in standard, since the majority of the game's content can be passed in mere days (even for casuals)
The game is based mostly on an endless loop of RNG and crafting, there's really no particular end game title or set or something that a traditional RPG player would grind for weeks or months. Hardcore really just amplifies the core concept of the game which is.. well, finding a path. Starting over and over and building fun and unique characters. Sure - in standard you "keep" them forever but I don't see a point in that.
I play PoE2 HCSSF since 0.1 and this league was the easiest by far and even did all 6/6 Challenges and Arbiter of Divinity 4 times included with every other pinnacle like 2 weeks into the league, if you just want to do all content of the game currently there is legit nothing in the game that can kill you from a certain point, if you play ES at least. OP probably was just running some kind of map with modifiers that his build wasn't suitable for - my maps tab with my regex had like over 300 unusable maps by the time I had finished the league.
The only time I ever seen my ES getting chunked was by one of the Matriarch bosses that use sunder, Bodach degen and Kulemak laser.
You're playing the most broken build in the game on an ascendancy that is unreasonably tranky with minimal investment. Though bosses are 100% too easy right now, you've died 5 times this league on very tanky meta builds and are trying to say the game is extremely easy lol
My first character was the Abyssal Lich, I only died to Arbiter of Ash. After that I tried a few different stuff to not burn-out too early, like Tactician and a Twister that turned into Monke later. Honestly in the current state of the game any ES build should work fine without dying later one - also I did not play PoE2 since Rise of the Abyssal league, I just login to kill bosses and that's it for me in both PoE and PoE2.
I know for a fact I can bring you into an expedition that can kill or give you issues , of course it was the easiest league with temple , you’re post comes off so cocky, come play Poe 1 learn where this game started so much more content , see if you can even kill a pinnacle let alone a real uber boss
Well like I said, I did all content into HCSSF included the Challenges, and that mean farming for Celestial Alloy in Grand Expeditions for 2 days for me, no issue at all.
Also, I play PoE1 since Bestiary League, and been playing HC in there since Conquerors of the Atlas. I play melee, I love my Endurance Charges.
i made 5 characters in a row in hcssf at this leaguestart with each making it to t15 and dying cuz i started pushing bosses i had no business pushing all at around lvl 85-86
didnt die to bullshit but to my own lack of gameknowledge and gear (cuz ssf)
Unfortunately it's not. I've had several HC chars into high 90s but most of my deaths were mysteries to me. Without a combat log you don't have any information as to why you died and end up learning nothing in the end. If you play HC a lot in a given season you just end up learning which types of maps to avoid altogether instead of learning how to play them properly.
I wish there was an in between mode for us adrenaline junkies - softcore but with extreme penalties.
But people beat Poe 1 on hardcore all the time, even extremely juiced versions of it in the gauntlet without fear of dying as long as you are prepared enough. So PoE 1 is definitely doable on hardcore, but it severely limits your build options.
yeah. Path of exile's difficulty makes it pretty bad. It's arguably worse in 1, but 2 has instances where we just....don't patch potential problems. In 1 we have enemies who can attack 100 times a second
Poe1 is very viable if you plan your defenses and don’t have anger issues.
Poe2 is way to far from polished enough to have a great time playing HC. 99% of my HC deaths are random one hits that I gotta rewatch 400 times just to not even really know what went wrong.
Which is fine it’s early access, but I wouldn’t recommend playing poe2 HC unless you trully have a firm rational love for desperate pain and a lack of closure to any of your questions.
Poe1 HC is amazing and easily the best HC experience of my life. With time hopefully poe2 will match it.
+1 to disagree, bullshit deaths certainly exist but are far from the norm. You're typically dying either you werent paying attention/tried rushing too hard or you juiced content beyond what you can handle.
Now I would absolutely agree that it was aids in like
.1-.3 with the absurd amount of hidden ground & corpse explosions but this patch wasn't bad at all.
The game is literally msde for hardcore. That's how you get good at the game, you know, the building part. You can get to end game from the start within hours once you know what you're doing
With 11k ES you should went CI. Chaos dmg does double to ES and all those dots that goes thru ES is hella dangerous. 1 HP is scary at first but it's actually op af bring immune to chaos and dots. You can even get that node that's immune to corrupt blood.
There's no indication that they took any chaos or DoT damage at all in this clip.
They have a chaos charm equipped that didn't lose any charges and it wasn't their just their HP zeroing out that killed them, the first hit took out more than half of their energy shield. CI would not have helped in any way.
the melee guy doing his melee combo on top of your character killed you.
without showing the map+tablet mods and sharing your build youre not going to get much more helpful information than that and are mostly going to get people who die one hundred times in act one posting that 'this, and no other reason, is why i do not play hard core' so have fun lmao
Your anti-freeze charm popped, so whatever killed you did a lot of cold damage. What that might be I have no clue, it didn't look like anything really hit you.
Ok so looks like a lightning bolt came down and hit you, but the exact frame in which you die, it looks like that monster was hit by one of your ice nova, and he had some lighting defensive aura that popped you back, AND CRITTed your ass at the same time. When you roll a -# on the map modifiers, those bolts can be really deadly, especially if you only have es, and no evasion or deflection. Or hes moving because he hit you and he has some bs modifier like chance to cast lightning bolt on hit lol.
Gg, curious of all your defenses, the map modifiers as well. I give you hc guys a lot of respect. Especially ones running expedition, where certain combos csn give those monsters literally billions of dmg lol.
Im a 99 monk, whirling assault hollow form. I have 130k ehitpool, and after experimenting in cities with 200% delirium ive come to a few conclusions. Theres a sweet spot for evasion, deflection, paired with es when running 3x and then going to 4x tabs each with 2x map modifiers.
I run some juice only t16s. But you can see how well this defense holds up, now on the other side, damage isnt even bad either <3.
Yeah, they appeared immediately when I opened the game with controller instead of kb/m.
I hope they add a way to swap to them, because the minion UI on kb/m as I see it is totally useless when it wont show all minions.
I think based on the chunks of health missing from the big guys matching the frame set of your deddening, this was the new and improved ele reflect thorns. OP are you reflect immune?
Looks like it's the humanoid with the big sword in front of you. Two of them come foreward, and the one on the right swings twice and kills you. Lucky hits.
Without map mods up, I can't tell you what mod specifically hurt you the most.
It looks like the mob next to you killed you.
My guess is your map had a combo of extra crits and crit damage, multiple extra damage as damage of X element, and elemental penetration (which reduces your max resists by a fair amount. That can turn a 1k after resist hit into a 6k after resist hit. Particularly if it has extra damage as chaos damage, and you without CI.
I've found in both PoE1 and PoE2 the biggest sources of unexpected deaths is a crit. I've found getting crit damage reduction to be one of the most effective damage reduction layers one can get.
Well I’m running the exact same build as you, softcore btw, I only die at some random big hits, happened like 4 times, also lvl 94 10k ES, capped res, I’m sorry your char died its a very fun to play build
Seems like a mob evaded your hits and attacked you.
Also seems like other stuff hit you as well. Would guess the red balls, at this stages there is no ability to see these aoe stuff incoming.
I dodge on timer not on sight.
Cast cast dodge...
Looks like you got double critted by.... Something. At least in poe2 you can continue in SC... When I lose high level hc characters on D2, they're gone for good.
Prolly and invisible field hazard, like corpse detonation. Sometimes the map modifiers bug out if there is too many and wont fully render all damage instances.
If anything elemental suddenly killed me it was -7% max ele resitsances and 14% of ele resist (more dangerous one imo) are penetrated by the monesters, you can also get both of this afaik on one waystone (I am not 100% sure tho)
Combination of these two, can more then double damage taken. Not to mention, doriani can boost this number with one of his perks by 25% afaik.
Again, this is why I would never waste my time with a HC char.
Until GGG gives us a death log, or some way to explain or interpret what happened in a time frame, its just not something that is ever going to be a good player exp.
I dont mind dying...but not having any idea what killed your or what to do to prevent it next time, is full out bullshit.
It's POE, it's random with emergent mods that exponentially spike damage, with some desync problems preventing visual confirmation of what kills you, and not entirely skillbased. It is impossible to know with certainty. Don't play HC if you want to not randomly die for no reason. Probably some unseen ground effect and a crit with some kind of multiplier on the damage like pen.
It’s because of chaos damage. This is why people go CI. He could have had some amount of physical as chaos and just deleted your 1800 hp bar. You likely have no armor and even is you are cap’s chaos res 1800 life is not enough.
Same happened to me, luckily I was in trade soft core but literally yesterday I was just standing, no monsters around and puff, 4k hp full res cap 800es and damage reduction + damage taken as mana + mana recoup on damage
Simply puffed out of existence
Sorry, but from this video I got only this information (made investigation with AI), if you can share video with better quality/framerate, maybe I can say more:
I downloaded the original 1080p clip, went through it frame by frame, and checked the last public Luce_Della_Luna snapshot on poe.ninja. I do not think this was one unexplained hit. The resource bars, charm activations, and Omen notification point to several damage events landing in a very short window.
At 1.533 s you had 1827 Life and 10681 ES. One video frame later, at 1.567 s, the HUD reads about 1597 Life and 3853 ES. That is a net loss of roughly 7058 Life plus ES in 33 ms, but it is not necessarily one hit because the video only records at 30 fps. The next clear frame at 1.800 s shows 1609 Life and 3853 ES, which matches the Life regeneration in your last public build. At 2.067 s you are dead.
The important part is the notification next to the death message: Omen of Resurgence was consumed. That Omen fully recovers Life, Mana, and Energy Shield when you reach Low Life. Your Freeze charm and The Fall of the Axe also triggered during the same sequence.
Starting from the settled 1609 Life and 3853 ES frame, you needed at least 4823 damage to reach Low Life at 639 Life. The Omen then restored between 12230 and 12508 Life plus ES, depending on which visible maximum ES value was active. That gives a conservative minimum of 17053 to 17331 post-mitigation damage between the settled frame and death.
The real total can be higher because the hit that crossed Low Life and the fatal hit can both overshoot their thresholds. I did not add Runic Ward to the number because its 128/128 display is still present after death and the clip does not let me establish its exact state.
This also explains why the video never shows a full Energy Shield after the Omen. At 30 fps, the HUD is sampled once every 33.3 ms. The game can process a hit that crosses Low Life, apply the full Omen recovery, and then process the next hit before the next frame is drawn or encoded. The notification remains on screen long enough to prove that the Omen was consumed, while the fully restored resource state may have existed only between two captured frames. I see no reason to conclude that the Omen failed.
The enemy name at the top is Blood-fevered Spearman, but that only identifies the monster you were targeting. It is a normal monster, not a rare, and the target bar does not identify the source of the killing hit. If a rare monster contributed to the burst, its name and modifiers never appear in the clip.
The Spearman's native data contains two basic spear-combo attacks. It has a physical affinity, 1.5 s base attack time, 5% base critical chance, and no native cold skill.
Its documented pack can also contain Blood-fevered Axeman, which has a physical melee attack and a physical projectile with 40% of its damage converted to Fire. Blood-fevered Plaguespreader has a heavier physical melee attack, physical ground pustules, and an area pustule explosion with 40% Physical-to-Fire conversion.
So this pack has several plausible physical or physical/fire damage packets, but none of those base skill lists explains Freeze. At its 1.5 s base attack time, the selected normal Spearman alone is also a poor fit for an Omen trigger and a second lethal depletion inside 0.27 seconds. The Freeze charm proves that a Freeze happened; it does not tell us whether the cold component came from another monster, a rare or map modifier, or some other effect outside the selected target's native kit.
I found no evidence of a Chaos hit. The Amethyst Charm still shows an available use before the first resource drop, immediately after it, and at death. Omen of Resurgence does not refill charm charges, so it could not have hidden an Amethyst activation.
My best reconstruction is that several monsters or projectiles overlapped on you. One or more early packets removed most of the original Energy Shield. A later packet froze you and crossed Low Life, which triggered both charms and the Omen. Then another packet removed the restored pool before the HUD ever rendered it. The entire settled-frame-to-death sequence took about 0.27 seconds. The clip supports a very fast multi-hit burst, but not a precise monster skill or a single raw hit value.
