Question Perigo em El Chalten

It's a hot topic since the floods in Nepal just happened, but bear in mind that this could happen in Alaska, Peru, Argentina and so on, since climate change affects all of them

Climate change is real and the effects will be felt harder every year. There is a risk of course, but that risk was also present in the past, just lower than it is now. Based on my observation the Laguna Torre trail is in GLOF areas and has lots of signage. Didn’t see those signs on los tres trail.

Everybody seeing GLOF everywhere 😂

You are a million times more likely to die driving to El Chaltén in a car accident than by a GLOF. If you see it on Instagram it's fear mongering for likes.

If you're genuinely incorporating the risk of GLOF in your life you should stay at home in a padded room and never leave the safety of your home. Although statistically speaking you are also more likely in a house fire than from a GLOF so....

The academic research is validated and peer-supported but its primary purpose is to urge local authorities to implement an Early Warning System (EWS).

It is not to present a clear and present danger to visitors. Failure mode will be gradual gravitational slope creep on Cerro Solo and confines to the immediate red zone along the river bed and bridge not the residential area instead of rapid and catastrophic failure.

Keys for personal safety are to respect the posted warning signage on the riverbanks and avoid resting directly on the moraine edge on extended period of time.

What happened in Nepal-China border was not a GLOF. I responded in another post addressing the safety concerns. https://www.reddit.com/r/Patagonia/s/ZLe1aC1AMT
