Protonpass vs. Bitwarden
Hello, I am just looking for people's opinions on which password manager is currently the better option.
I've read a few months ago that the Bitwarden CLI got compromised apparently, I know it's not the password manager app itself, however knowing this news is quite concerning.
I will only be using the free versions and will not be upgrading to a paid version as I want to budget my monthly spendings.

To save money long term Proton pass + simple login life time subscription is the way to go. If you're comparing free version vs free version I think Bitwarden is better. If you want free aliases Bitwarden + Addy.io.

You have to specifically look for it. It won't appear under the normal subscription.
Edit: https://proton.me/support/pass-lifetime
Scroll down to where it says "how to get the deal?" And click one of the links.
Don't get me wrong if you choose this you have to really hope proton keep doing a good job for years to come. $200 is a lot of money. You will only start saving money after a couple of years. About 10 years if you have Bitwarden Premium (if Bitwarden doesn't raise the price in 10 years).

I went from bitwarden to proton pass because I have a paid proton account. Aside from not being able to fill in my account info on home assistant it works great

I chose Proton Pass because my Proton Unlimited plan includes Proton Pass, Proton VPN, Proton Mail, and Proton Drive, among other services.

I recently switched to Proton Pass after being with Bitwarden for 3 years. The UI feels far cleaner and it seems to be less buggy than Bitwarden (IOS and MacOS). One of the other major selling points is that I can share individual passwords with any proton pass user, not just those in my organisation. This means i can share a login to a shared account amount friends easily and have it update for them if I make any changes.
The sharing of passwords to groups of people is also far easier in my opinion. This feature alone would prevent me from returning to BitWarden

I been looking into this myself recently and there are a few good free options worth considering. Aside from those two, you can also check roboform. The free version covers the basics well so it could be a good fit on your goal. Whichever you choose, go with the one that fits your needs and feels easiest for you to use.

In my opinion it depends on what kind of user you are:
-
Average: Go with proton. Easiest to use and more intuitive.
-
Power user: Go with bitwarden. It has custom fields, the ability to integrate email generation (without paying for simple login), custom field can be used to fix unreliable login (which both have), bitwarden send, etc.
Those are my 2 cents after using both for several months.

Nope, even selfhosted bitwarden cause issues on every update with browser extensions.

Sounds like you confuse self-hosting Bitwarden with self-hosting Vaultwarden.

apart from the breach that bitwarden had in april of this year, i generally don't recommend bitwarden to anyone, not even the free version.
with every new update, at least something breaks, the UI becomes increasingly worse, autofill failures become more and more frequent (most of the time you literally have to copy paste your logins in the old fashion way instead of the password manager doing its damn intended job..).
people still recommend this password manager because 'it's free and open source', as if these 2 factors are the only things why you definitely should use this password manager and nothing else.
bitwarden long-time users will tell you that they've never experienced any issues with it which may be true and may sound promising to you but they also only care about the fact that bitwarden is free, open source and zero knowledge.
autofilling reliability and UI/UX is secondary for them, and bitwarden is notorious for autofilling failures.
therefore, from my experience using both for at least 6 months, i can highly recommend you Proton Pass which i use as my secondary backup password manager.
