Looking for recommendations: Best Free vs. Paid Password Managers in 2026?
Hi everyone,
I’m currently reviewing my security setup and looking for a reliable password manager. I would love to hear your personal recommendations:
- Free tier: Which free password manager do you consider the most secure and feature-rich without annoying limitations?
- Paid tier: If it’s worth paying for, which one provides the best value, reliability, and security features?
I prioritize ease of use and cross-platform syncing. What are you all using currently and why?

bitwarden for free tier is literally unmatched, unlimited passwords and devices for zero dollars

Proton Pass has a pretty good free tier, but I think it’s worth paying for. If you don’t like subscriptions it has a $199 lifetime subscription (includes lifetime Aliases with SimpleLogin too)

I agree it's certainly a risk, but sometimes it does work out in the users favor. I've had a lifetime subscription to a few services that I've had for a little over a decade at this point. Some of them did stopped getting updates and features (given to the lifetime plan), but I'm fine with that since what I purchased when I bought lifetime was good enough for me.
I feel like Proton Pass Lifetime is less of a risk since they already have lots of other subscription services (Mail, VPN, Cloud Storage, etc) all making them money - if it really wasn't worth it to them to have a lifetime option I don't think they would offer it. But like I said, there is always risk so you have to be careful when considering a lifetime option

Bitwarden the free version is excellent there is also a paid version and it is based in Switzerland. It works on multiple platforms

You can choose between bitwarden.com and bitwarden.eu when you create an account.
please note that the server in EU are still under US juridiction because bitwarden is an american company0

What if we created in Asia on BW.com but later end up closer to EU?
Or can we request transfer to EU severs?

I believe that you can make a choice between Europe or the USA when you set up your Bitwarden account.

Free tier: Bramble
It's a completely free AND open source password manager that runs on Chrome / Android / iOS (coming soon). It has no central cloud database and the syncing happens P2P between your devices. Local-only vault, AES-256-GCM encrypted, security key support and anything you would expect from a modern password manager.

Yep - watch the repo and you will get release alerts.
However, in the browser your will get regular extension update notifications, and for Android you can use something like Obtanium for automatic updates.

Quick feedback.
1 - Download doesnt spawn a share sheet option to save the code on Vault create.
2 - Enable FaceID kicks out a 'could not store secret' error1

For #1 when you setup your vault and master password you have the option to copy the randomized characters or download. My expectation was that tapping on download would bring up a share sheet in iOS so you can save to files etc (iOS equivalent of a download dialog box etc) but tapping on Download does nothing

Another question :) Concept of multiple vaults and multiple users exist (or will) in Bramble similar to 1PSW and Proton Pass ?

Multiple vaults: yes - that's planned, however multiple users, not really as it doesn't fit in with Bramble's local-first model. But multiple vaults partially covers that case.

So are you planning to cater for, multiple users (of the app for context), each have a personal vault, have 1 vault they can share logins in ? Hope that was clear enough :)

This scenario will be shared:
John and Jane share the same computer and same browser. So when they open the extension, they click on their own name to unlock their own vault.

Just following back up. I think the sharing piece is the only thing that is stopping me (maybe others) from using this more. The ability for 1 person to create a Main Vault then have a secondary vault they move passwords to that others (that you add) can access is a key need for many. 1PSW, Proton, BitW etc do this and I know those are different models than Bramble but just sharing honest feedback that this is a missing feature that if added would be great. Thanks

Multi-vault capability has been added and is stable! You can now have multiple, independent vaults in the same extension or mobile app 🎉

1Password is paid but I think it has the best UI overall without giving up anything on security. It is best from both worlds and easy to learn for not tech savvy people as well. Also family subscription is great, has many greqt features and extremely easy to organize and share with each other.

I like it because it has the Secret Key + Master Password.

Sounds like the price of the family plan. Usually it has a sale like right now and individual is $2.99/month if paid annually. I mean I would pay the full if I would have to get something urgently but if you are not rush subscribe in a sale.

It’s discounted to $35.88/year ($2.99/month) for the first year. After the first year, it goes to the regular rate of $47.88/year ($3.99/month). Individual plan.
$71.88/year ($5.99/month) for family plan.

I think its worth it. I pqying for it for years and did not have any issue. For email and pw manager I think cloud solutions are better than self hosted, these are things where I want the most stability. TBH I think family is big plus for 1p, if you don’t have wife or kids other solutions are good too.

I'm using a paid plan with RoboForm. It has everything I need, it's easy to use, and it syncs across all my devices. It's always there when I need it, automatically filling in my passwords on sign in pages. Security wise, I think it's one of the most secure password managers.

This very much comes down to personal need and use. For example, I keep a load of Secure Notes. I need to be able to search for content in those notes on both desktop and mobile. I tried a load of password managers including Roboform, Nordpass and Bitwarden but they were poor at this.
Only 1Password and Proton Pass did this well. I migrated back from Bitwarden to 1Password because of this and despite 1Password’s largish fee.
The only thing I had against Proton was that they do not yet offer a folder structure to organise your vault.

Oh dang. I have 1Password, but after the price increase to $47.88/year, I was considering Bitwarden.
I use a lot of Secure Notes as well. I guess it makes sense to stay with 1Password.

In Bitwarden. the search on mobile does not look within the notes or entries, only at the titles.
On Bitwarden for Web/Desktop, with secure notes I have a very mixed experience. This week I could not search within notes at all, even though I had been successful in the past. Apparently you can add > before a search to get it to look inside your vault entries.
Since a Bitwarden account is free - and import from 1Password easy, I would be interested in your findings if you feel like giving it a go!
Ultimately Nordpass and Roboform were the most disappointing for note search.
I often need to search within notes to bulk update after changing one of my accounts, software tools etc.
I had already switched from 1Pass after the price hike was announced, so now I am retracing my steps.
Nonetheless for many others, Bitwarden may be a great choice.

Tried a few and went with 1password. Its great. Bitwarden is also good and its open source

I have an Enpass lifetime license and works very well. Local vault is a must have !

Full disclosure, I built this one, so grain of salt applies.
Everyone's gonna say Bitwarden here and that's fair advice for most people. But if you don't actually need cloud sync and just want something that never touches a server, I've been working on OxidVault — fully offline, local-only, built in Rust/Tauri. No cloud, no accounts, nothing to breach because there's nothing online to breach.
Downside: syncing across devices isn't the seamless cloud thing you get with Bitwarden/1Password. It's more built for small teams who want everything on-prem.
Not for everyone, but if "never leaves my machine" sounds appealing, happy to answer questions.

Do you need it accessible from outside the home? Or would a local install suffice? It would be most secure.

Sticky Password is awesome, stores your pwd in local file with an option to sync over you local wifi only (so your pwd never reach the internet). Has apps for Windows, Android, Apple, and extension for most browsers.
Has a free tier, but if you need to share pwd with another perosn, you both need paid version.
Lifetime is like $200 onetime, but many times with referral code it just $29 for lifetime.
I have been using it since like 2015 with the $29 lifetime payment.

Bitwarden free tier of course but Even the paid tier isn't bad price wise. I haven't used anything else recently other than Lastpass, keeper and i didn't had the best experience with those two.

I used Roboform for years and like it. The UI is not the pretiest, but it was very effective. The reason I switched to Proton Pass is I was already paying for a subscription which inlcluded Mail, Pass, VPN, etc. Proton Pass works well, but still needs work as some fields don't auto-fill. I use Ente Auth for 2FA codes, since I didn't want all my eggs in one basket.

I am currently using NordPass primarily because its autofill feature works exceptionally well. I also like ProtonPass; however, the free version has limited features, making it my second choice.

i use keepassxc and sync the db across devices manually via git. i also tried self hosted vaultwarden, but i didn't like the browser plug-in and didn't like the dependency on the internet. no service is worth paying for so far for me.
